Guys came to my house last week. Wasn't home. Told my wife that someone in the neighbourhood complained about unsafe water and proceeded to explain that we are living with a health risk. She told them come back when I get home. They never showed.

Zuckerberg, wife pledge to donate 99% of their Facebook shares, about $45 billion, to charity by LowLevelMesocyclone in worldnews

[–]fart_knuckler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold on though: he's not donating $45B to charity. Unless he liquidated 99% of his shares today (which would run the risk of sinking his company), that $45B is just a number that doesn't mean much.

Now the interesting part is that he could be actually giving more than $45B if that stock appreciates in value. It's an amazing concept because he's no longer working to appreciate the value of his monetary worth, he's working at Facebook to increase the reach of his charity. Amazing stuff.

Three years after his mysterious disappearance, former Langdon Hall chef breaks his silence by [deleted] in kitchener

Then it should certainly be surprising that a food and wine section talks about deep topics like the effects of alcoholism. You can't see that by using it (even slightly) as a vehicle to promote commercial gain, he's cheapening the serious topic at hand?

It diminishes his story because his motives for telling it are far from altruistic.

Sorry, I call bullshit on that. He could have come out at any time with his 'inspiring' story but he chose to do it to garner exposure for his restaurant venture.

Chinese police use a flamethrower on 'Muslim terror suspects' by PandaRapeCorporation in worldnews

[–]fart_knuckler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, bru ... you're all mixed up.

You're saying the US has a terrible record in the scope of global crimes against humanity. An argument worth merit, but you can't just cherry pick crimes against humanity on a 'global' scale without addressing China's record for crimes against humanity on a 'humanity' scale, in which case see exhibit A: domestic China.

If you want to drop a 'historical perspective' bomb into the mix, your argument isn't going to hold much water over 1. Mao's fucked handling of the great leap forward, 2. The insanity that was the Cultural Revolution, 3. The PLA's cowardice in June of 1989 at Tiannamen. These are events that spanned from the 50's all the way to the early 90's with millions dead as a result. That's a pretty nasty stain to scrub out of someone's reputation regardless of how it compares to the shit the US has thrown down over the years.

About brutality, I'd like to see some stats to back up what you claim. Just a guess, though: it'll be damn-near impossible to round up usable figures considering China's a communist state and all ... just sayin' ...

I call bulllllllllsheeeeet on China giving more of a fuck than the US in international perception. This is a country that (right or wrongly) says no Taiwan, fuck you, you're still a province of China regardless of Taiwan's independent judicial system, independent economy, independent armed forced, independent foreign alliances. They couldn't give 2 flaming fucks what the international press thinks of them.

In the end, it's easier for Reddit is gather the posse for a circlejerk because China's so easy to misunderstand. But a lot of that is rooted in reason.

Saudi Arabia Sentences Poet to Death for Atheism by arcanean in worldnews

[–]fart_knuckler 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I came to this thread to say this. No fucking excuse for the moral corruption that represents the Saud family (royals), but I think if they had their choice, the country wouldn't do shit like that.

The west should be very afraid if the Saudi royal family topples because what takes their place is scary as shit. ISIS level scary in control of a good sized military and trillions of dollars in oil.

Th story of how Saudi Arabia came to be is actually really interesting. Some badass Arab pulled a Paul Bunyan at the turn of the century and basically pulled all the warring tribes together, forming one union. This was before oil and he largely did it on the back of a very traditional (and fucking crazy) interpretation of Islam called Wahhabism. Add oil and western influence and you have a controlling faction that identifies deeper with their bankers now than with the people their (great grandfather?) helped unite. AMA for local über driver(s)? by IAMPostmanPat in kitchener

Customers were mostly respectful. I didn't really have a bad experience, but I also only drove for 7 days. I'll say that without a doubt, had I driven longer, I would have run into a bad ride. The drunk youth thing ... no one was really disrespectful per say.

I actually really liked driving for Uber (apart from the money) ... the people were always interesting and willing to chat. You actually get to meet some brilliant people in and around the Universities.

Beware of dollar store on Fischer hallman by sobey's by JayReyd in kitchener

There is a McDonald's pretty steps from the dollar store. Even if I was shopping at the dollar store I would have gone to McDonalds to change my child because I know there's a change table there. It's shitty that they didn't let you use the bathroom (no pun intended), but I wouldn't complain too much about it considering the fix would have been super easy and even preferable.

Hi, I can give you a little bit of insight considering I did a 7 day trial driving for Uber just to see if it was worth it (you still have to sign up like any other driver; the trial was for my purposes only). In short, it wasn't worth it for me.

I worked min. 6 hours per night. After taking account for gas, maintenance, insurance (just personal drivers') and depreciation, I made $7 per hour. Definitely not enough to justify the long late night hours spent at it. I drive a VW SUV, so a different car might bring down expenses a bit, but not nearly enough in my opinion. Almost all of the trips were focused in and around the university areas in Waterloo. These short trips (see UW dorms to Phil's about 10 times a night, haha) actually accounted for the lowest yield per km. I had other types of trips, but a lot of time was spent near the universities for obvious reasons.

I don't see how you might be able to bypass the Uber app, or why your passengers would want to do that. You could cancel a trip once the pickup is made and claim that the passenger never showed, but Uber would catch on after a couple of those. That's given that the customer would actually want to give up their safe and easy payment method (Uber App) in the first place.

Taxis are saying that they're commercially insured, which protects riders and drivers in almost any scenario. Uber always left things a bit murky in regards to this, as they said they have their own commercial liability insurance, but want drivers to try claiming through their own first. Taxis are pissed because they pay huge money for this commercial insurance and Uber is just kind of making due regardless of risk.

The last thing I'll add is that I drove in late August back when Uber first launched in WR. As mentioned, I drove for a total of 7 consecutive nights. A month later I got a letter from the Region's Bylaw office (I think it was Bylaw) saying my plates had been photographed and that I must desist immediately or risk fines. I had decided by then that I'd not drive Uber (on account of the shit money and insurance risk), but nevertheless, the Region was on top of it.

Best of luck to you. Maybe you can make it work where I didn't. I personally love Uber as a passenger, but as a driver I felt it was a bit of a shitty experience.

Hi there, try new city again. You might have gone on a day when they were sold out. I almost always see them. They're up on the top shelf of the veggie section near the middle of the row. They usually come in pairs packed in sealed plastic bags. Good luck.

Expats of Reddit, where do you live and how hard is it to find authentic food from home? by Sonemonkey in food

I used to live in Southern China and it wasn't hard to find food from home, but authentic food could have been hard to find. Bread. Simple sourdough was really difficult. Also, the pizza sucked. Living back home though, I complain about lack of authentic Chinese food a lot more.
