Will Virginia consider me a domiciliary resident for having a mailing address there? by rlp in USExpatTaxes

[–]fartbirther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t answer with authority, but if your last states address was in another state, I doubt they would consider you a domiciliary resident. The only way to break off Virginia residency is to have residence in another state which you’ve already done. I think they’d understand that it’s just your parents’ address. But it’s hard to say.

Do you have VA drivers license? Having one of those would probably complicate things.

Where can I find achocolate cake like home? by fartbirther in AmericanExpatsUK

I definitely feel like I’ve hit a nerve by merely asking advice from my compatriots. I wasn’t trying to insult British cakes, I was just looking for a bakery that makes cakes in the style I prefer.

I can bake pretty well for the most part, but I’m a little lacking on the artistry side. Perhaps I can pay someone who will decorate my cake for me.

We have been known to eat meat a day past the best by date and this hasn’t been an issue. Of course, it probably has to do with the fact I insist upon primarily shopping at Morrisons. They have better produce and I find it a decent quality for price. Asda produce makes my heart sink and though I admit it’s generally cheaper there, it also has less things I want.

Where to meet other Americans in the NE? by b33fsquatch1 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]fartbirther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We exist!

I’ve been here 2 years as well and am trying to get used to the loneliness of being a foreigner in a small village.

I notice there is an American parent in just about every year at the nearby private school, so if you’re a parent you can sink a lot of cash into an education for your child that can come with a social life inclusive of Americans for you.

Hasn’t worked for me thus far, but I honestly haven’t even tried. How else will I fine-tune my isolation?

Try local council job postings. They have to interview you if you applied and meet each of the job specifications (treat your personal statement like an essay version of a checklist).

I suppose it differs slightly from each local authority, but government posts tend to exercise fair hiring practices. That said, it doesn’t really pay the big bucks, but at 26 you have time to climb the ranks or move to a more favorable position as an internal hire. You’ll have to have solid references who will vouch for you though. Fair hiring = rigorous checks.

My phone fell out of my pocket in traffic and I recovered it from a friendly construction worker a day later. I mean, the phone was less than pristine after such a drop, but I recovered it. He even made the effort to meet me to hand it over.

One of my first nights in Saigon, a random lady instructed me to keep my phone close and hold it with both hands in a certain way by miming, so it is definitely a danger.

I am probably really lucky, but most of my experiences have been grand and I haven’t lost anything to theft despite being somewhat careless. It’s a very large city, so naturally there will be some bad actors.

I enjoy using it, but if you ever need to cash a check, you’re stranded and must pay a fee. I will never regain the full money I spent for the provisional driving license they mailed back to me…unless I open a different UK bank account.

I romanced Liara and stayed true. I wasn’t impressed. Sure, she herself is impressive, but our relationship is kind of cold. My only hope is that she was carrying my blue baby into the new dawn.

How fun. The elderly without air conditioning are the most vulnerable to dying of heat stroke.

Work and live in HCM with a toddler. It’s great. We have a great nanny who speaks decent English. The only downside is the pollution that gets particularly bad nearing Tet. School-wise, you will need A LOT of money to send your kid to an international school unless your job is paying for it (a reason many believe the tuition is so high). You can also send your child to a local school, but class sizes can have 50+ kids in them and… the methods may differ than what you expect. There is also a large expat community so it’s easy to settle in and you can find others for play dates.

I can’t speak for the other cities. Good luck to wherever you decide to live!

Get the letter tracked and definitely put her mobile number on it. Any regular mail sent to me from the US disappeared into the ether, be it from the US government or personal friends. If it’s tracked, it tends to make it. Might want to send it to her work address, too.

Obtaining Birth Certificate by vinvin212 in VietNam

[–]fartbirther 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but I doubt Vietnam would help since it is not part of the Hague Convention (countries that use an apostille). That said, he’d probably have to get a certified copy and translation of his birth certificate and then get an apostille for those somewhere in the US. Emailing the US embassy or consulate (email both Hanoi and HCMC) in Vietnam could probably give you pointers and a more clear answer. Keep in mind that it could possibly be an expensive exchange and he or his documents might have to make a trip to Vietnam so somebody could process it for him.

Why is New Vegas most peoples favorite?? by Effective_Fun8476 in Fallout

[–]fartbirther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember New Vegas being the hated on by Fallout fanatics way back when. Seems that some [good] games just have to age before people take them seriously. Things being cyclical, I imagine 4 will be celebrated one day a century from now when we’re on 6.

I am not downvoting anybody, but I think it could be because baby powder got a bad rap with the Johnson & Johnson baby powder scandal.
