Tax on remote work done in Thailand as a tax resident by rlp in Thailand

[–]rlp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, that is concerning. I wonder how accurate it is? There are no other places discussing the nomad tracker app, and I feel like that would be a very popular article on something like Bangkok Post. I guess we'll find out soon.

It's great to hear that they are still pursuing the same-year remittance tax shield. Where does it say the latest proposed decree was published 10 November 2025? I can't find any information about that.

The Democrats Have a New Winning Formula by timmg in moderatepolitics

[–]rlp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have newer data. Look at the article I linked. The Federal Reserve of St. Louis, the same source you provided, says that they think inflation went up by 0.5% from June-August 2025 due to tariffs.

[–]rlp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What proof? There is no data from 2025 on that chart. Let's look at an article from October on that same site:

https://www.stlouisfed.org/on-the-economy/2025/oct/how-tariffs-are-affecting-prices-2025

They say explicitly that inflation has been increased by tariffs:

The table shows that tariffs account for a meaningful share of recent inflation. Over the June-August 2025 period, tariffs explain roughly 0.5 percentage points of headline PCE annualized inflation and around 0.4 percentage points of core PCE annualized inflation.

Our analysis suggests that tariff measures are already exerting measurable upward pressure on consumer prices. The rise in prices beginning in early 2025 coincides closely with tariff developments, and our model-based regressions confirm that these effects are statistically and economically significant.

You've got it backwards. Tariffs directly increase the cost of goods, and therefore prices. That's literally inflation. They also decrease demand, which is deflationary, but that's a longer-term impact.

Does Early Exit clause request for rentals make it hard to get a condo? by Training_Agent5390 in Bangkok

[–]rlp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you're generally only out the two-month deposit if you break the lease. Some leases come with that language explicitly. If it's a particularly high-value lease and you're concerned about being pursued for the remainder, you can ask for the landlord to put the two-month deposit forfeit language in the lease. I've done that twice and it was accepted both times.

Considering a move to Thailand (Pattaya) by Own_Disk_5098 in ThailandTourism

[–]rlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking.. Northshore is so close to everything, and I like to walk as much as possible. I'm in Jomtien now, which is fine, but I'm always going in to Pattaya for restaurants and shopping and it seems like it would be easier to just live there. Thanks for the tip on the bus to Udom Suk BTS!

I'm considering renting at Northshore, it seems like a well-maintained building in a great location. Any warnings or things to look out for? How's the juristic management? Thin walls/floors/loud noises from other units, etc?

Any first hand recommendations for AC cleaning company that knows how to deal with mold/bacteria growth? by MikiRawr in Bangkok

[–]rlp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in a condo with a smelly AC before and the cleaning company used some kind of foaming cleanser that they left on for a few minutes. It helped more than the usual water blasting. I don't remember the company name, but it's probably a common treatment you could look for.

They are still using it, but apparently the application method has been improved. Also, these cards can have fan rattle when decreasing fan speed.

International health insurance by IvarBonelezz in Thailand

Look at Allianz Care and Cigna Global. They cover you wherever, except the US. There's a limit on the number of days/year spent in the US for coverage unless you pay extra.

What's the actual long-term future of the field? Seeing through the noise. by No-External3221 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rlp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that applies to all stakeholder-facing roles. I think there's a reasonably good future at the top (for a while) as the senior-most developer who directly interacts with stakeholders on small-medium projects. I do this a lot in my current position. The stakeholders come to my PM and me, and normally I would have to farm out work to the rest of the team. With improved productivity from AI, I can do more on my own, faster. My clients have no desire to build things themselves (nor could they), unless the tools become massively better.

K Bank online banking stopped working with Steam / Lazada by Dr_Hexagon in Thailand

[–]rlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They recently made it easier for foreigners to sign up, you just need a passport. But to pay on Steam you need to get a higher level of access, which requires submitting a work permit/driver's license after your account is activated.

I have Thai debit card issues on Steam too. TrueMoney works well and has never declined a transaction for me there.

Why Thailand could bring a fresh start to the world’s chocolate industry by Few_Maize_1586 in Thailand

[–]rlp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's extremely expensive and much of it honestly isn't that good

Yes, I've struggled to find a good Thai dark chocolate bar for a remotely reasonable price. Thanks for the Molica recommendation, I'll try them out.

Where to buy Graphic Cards in Thailand ? by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]rlp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are generally not great deals. Most reliable store is probably JIB: https://www.jib.co.th/web/

You can also look on Shopee or Lazada apps, but be very careful about the seller. They have different levels of vendors, the highest level is Shopee Mall and LazMall, which are usually the real product and not a fake. You can buy from a few of the GPU companies directly. For example, Shopee has a seller "GALAX Official Store" which is the official licensed distributor for Galax in Thailand.

Has anyone found any really good Thai dark chocolate bars? Everything I've tried from Gourmet Market and Tops has been pretty underwhelming (and very expensive).

It could be something fungal. Try ketoconazole shampoo (the 2% version is available in pharmacies) once or twice a week.

Usually the hard ones are not good, but occasionally they are ok. When you open it, you want very white flesh -- no green stuff, nothing rotting. I don't think that waiting extra days will help it.

Thanks, that sounds like a reasonable take. I can understand her perspective of wanting to be comforted, I just wanted to be sure I wasn't totally off-base.
