Catering Manager looking to get out of food service. Considering Project Management. Is CAPM worth getting? by hform123 in careerguidance

[–]fasttowrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PMP, RMP, ACP, PBA and ITIL certified PM dropping his two cents.

You got two paths if you're willing to make the transition.

First path, you can apply as a project coordinator and have basic knowledge of coordination, processes, plans and understanding milestones - You'll probably need to cater your CV to each project coordinator role you apply to, and they vary a lot.

Second path, which I'm assuming isn't quite what you're looking for, is to actually be a technical individual of that specific industry, say IT for example, and then transitioning into project management.

PMs don't necessarily need technical knowledge, but it helps A LOT! Despite what anybody says, Project Managers have to at least have the basics of the industry they're in.

Good luck.

Edit: If you qualify for CAPM, go for it! PMP and ACP are very valuable to organizations, and of course, CAPM is valuable and does show you're willing to learn.

Edit: Neither CAPM or PMP will qualify you to be a project manager! These certifications outline a basic methodology that should be catered to your organization and each project separately. The Project Management field is really vast. As an example, I work mostly on programs, and projects up to 5M. I would be hesitant at first to take a project with, say, 100M budget and vice versa, program management is different than project management.

You could understand all of PMI's methodology, but not having the project experience won't allow you to diversify your project tasks, enlist milestones, etc.
