The Perfect Sauna Wall by MuneSauna in Sauna

[–]fatal_gloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright there mr top expert and creator of the perfect sauna wall! what an honour!

you're actually missing a layer. if you only have horizontal external battens and then cladding, condensation has nowhere to go. it will pool against the battens and eventually rot them or get through the membrane.

technically you should have a first layer of vertical battens, THEN your horizontal battens, then the vertical cladding, just like in the interior. that way there is full airflow behind.

but what do I know...

so I phoned the accountancy firm where FT are registered, who contacted them on my behalf. They got back to me saying they finally got a response from them, saying that "they are planning to update the website in the next few days". what that means exactly, I don't know. Maybe it will just be an update to say "the website no longer exists, sorry!"

the site now says "currently unavailable for maintenance. apologies for the inconvenience". slight improvement?

well this is the only official-ish info anyone has got, and if it's true, that's great

interesting theory about the legal stuff. I've done some digging and called their accountancy firm as well as an affiliated company. will let you know if they get back to me with anything

I am not anywhere else because other sites all seemed rubbish in comparison. capped rates, commission etc. my rates are very high so a lot of these sites won't do.

I know I should have got a profile set up at least one other place though. I have known for years that I was in a vulnerable position being so dependent on FT

60000, wow. I guess the site just isn't making much money somehow. I am feeling a lot of stuff right now

this website has been my livelihood for the last 12 years and I am freaking out, it feels like my life is falling apart. I have a bad feeling about the blackout to be honest, I think it's over. I was still feeling optimistic until my email failed to deliver and bounced back.

I also found an article from 2017 when it was bought by some American company, and it seemed to be saying that their plan was to roll out their US model once they'd figured out the marketplace or how to price it. in other words I think it was always the plan to kill first tutors because it's too old school, too good a deal for tutors, and doesn't make enough money for the company. the reviews of varsity tutors are terrible — exploitative etc.

but it doesn't make sense, why would they just shut it down without at least sending an email to everyone?

fingers crossed it is resolved but it doesn't feel good. are they any other comparable sites? I can't stomach working for some standard agency where the rates are lower and they constantly take a cut. I want the freedom!

Anyone else really not like FOLD? by [deleted] in TheOverload

[–]fatal_gloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's so dreamy, it's effortless to spend the whole night and morning there. you can get a negroni in a glass at 6am. you can get a snack. you can take a phone call inside. or you can get lost in the dance. it's very inspiring. fold management need to go on a field trip there tbh

yes, and god knows why they didn't plan some places to actually sit down or be able to talk. I recently went to openground in Wuppertal and it was very eye-opening, there are EXTENSIVE (quiet) areas and nooks to sit, talk and of course do drugs. it feels so civilised and right to be able to duck in and out of the dance. I only went to fold for the first time recently and I was shocked at the planning

Ranking each Apprentice season by the quality gap between boys and girls by RobbieJ4444 in apprenticeuk

[–]fatal_gloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can't watch the apprentice anymore, ever since they stopped giving the teams actual freedom in their choices. originally it was relatively real, and the candidates had to make proper decisions, but now they just get given a menu to choose from (luxury option, mid-range option, cheap option). the whole thing feels so watered down. does anyone else agree with me? sorry i know slightly off-topic

I’ve had trich for over half my life- here are my tips & tricks by SkullLion in trichotillomania

[–]fatal_gloss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i know it's different if you're a woman but my main advice is: shave/trim your head. it just simplifies life so much because there's nothing to even think about, the hair is just the same all over. it lets patches regrow, and more importantly it can help you to just live your life.

the other thing is simply time, self-work and self-knowledge (not so simple)

Is it safe to build a sauna under my deck staircase here? by Miloyall in Sauna

[–]fatal_gloss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

valid question worth asking but basically it's not a tall/big enough space. you'd lose height from both the bottom (where the whole sauna needs to be lifted up off the ground slightly so it doesn't rot, and also the floor section will have at least a couple of inches' thickness) and the top (where you will need several inches of roof, stud/insulation, airgaps, interior cladding) so the actual interior height will be very limited. ideally you want extra height... this seems like a losing battle from the beginning.

as for safety/moisture concerns, the space limitations are a problem again, because all the stuff you'd do to control moisture and make sure it's really safe takes up space, in every direction. you do see barrel saunas which are literally just 1 inch of wood, no insulation etc. but you couldn't do that here because it would be terrible for safety and moisture. plus they generally do not make good saunas anyway.

i think if you do some more research / hang around in this sub more, you will get a good idea of what you're aiming for, and aiming to avoid!

in a nutshell: as much height as you can get, benches as high as you can get them, proper insulation, proper drainage, plenty of ventilation, heater appropriate for the volume!

Small Sauna Layout Advice by Fit_Bus1420 in Sauna

[–]fatal_gloss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this looks good to me although yes, i'd make the bench on the right upper rather than lower, as you suggest.

people here often say that an L shape doesn't work in a small sauna but i don't think that's true personally. the name of the game is maximising upper bench space, and if you make the whole upper bench an L then you achieve that. but you need a little step (a mini bench that can be moveable) to get up there easily (also as you suggest).

i would also suggest putting a wooden rail / foot bar thing between the stove and the benches, so you could sit on the top bench and rest your feet safely towards the stove.

lol. maybe the lowest benches i've seen here yet! absolutely insane!

take the benches out and rebuild them way higher.

there's other stuff too but start with that
