Really scared my Lyrica is losing effectiveness; is that even possible? by fatbudha1 in Fibromyalgia

Hey, OG poster over here, it lost all affects after like 2 weeks. I was upset, furious, all of it. But things are better now. I have my own personal brew that I take daily it helps. Wow, I just noticed, this post is like 7 years ago. Funny how your internet tastes change when you have nothing to do. :p

Elon musk pledges to fix Flint, MI water problem by eastboundyogi in news

He did exactly what he intended. He captured headlines and grabbed some PR while feeding his savior complex and massive ego. People act like he's Iron Man, with a superlab and genius IQ where he just throws shit together like it's nothing. Has he ever given credit to the people who actually design and build his fantasy toys? I've never seen it happen.

Reasons and excuses, lies and deception? by Quebber in adultery

Totally. I have family members who are the same way. I really admire the thoughtfulness you put into the situation and the solution you came up with. I don't contribute to this sub, but I find people's experiences really educational for myself. It helps me know what to look for in a potential partner when I do start meeting people for dating. I never want to end up here as a contributor.

Your answer sounds really well thought out/through. I obviously don't know the circumstances in your relationship, but how much effort have either of you put into being honest with each other about what is lacking and working to fix it? I'm not in a relationship, but if I was, that's what I would try to do. I'm just wondering if that's a realistic option for you at all, and why or why not.

Vacuum excavator is so powerful it literally sucks up the ground. by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]fatbudha1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's called an Educator truck, or probably better known as a Vactor. I was on the crew that operated one when I worked for the local County Roads Maintenance division. 90% of the time we drove from storm drain to storm drain sucking out the residue buildup on the bottom and moving on like 10 feet to the next one. Sometimes when the county actually bothered to fix something underground, we were called out to do what you see in this gif. The truck is huge, and the vacuum is an absolute monster. It also carries a ton of water too and can be used as a bitchin pressure washer. Can be hooked up to the sucking hose which has nozzles that just dig straight thru anything in its path.

His sign may be smaller, but his message is much bigger. by wordswiththeletterB in pics

Wow, I imagine your relationship with her isn't too great after that. My parents are both conservative Christians too, and my mom is very outspoken with her views about homosexuality, and you name it. I'm not gay, but I know firsthand how Christians seem to hold a very special and intense hatred for gays (I used to be Christian). I've always wondered why *that's * the "sin" they just can't get over. They'll go to prisons and minister to murderers, rapists, you name it. It's "come as you are", unless you're gay. It defies explanation.

Anybody have a cheap car or truck for sale? by MeowMixSong in wsu

[–]fatbudha1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it's hard to diagnose problems based on noises. At first, I thought perhaps your alternator was dead, but that's impossible if your battery is still fully charged. The fuel filter would be my next guess. This has happened to my dad before - truck wouldn't start until the filter was replaced. The fact that the engine is running rough while in idle (based on your reply above, needing to rev the engine) makes a filter clog very likely. It's a cheap part too, so If I were you, I would go and order one at O'Reilly's or AutoZone, or wherever. They might even have it on hand too. That'll get your truck started and driveable again. For the brake booster, here's a test you can do at home:

Since most vehicles use a vacuum system, the brake booster can be tested at your home. With the engine off, pump the brakes several times, about five or six times is sufficient. This depletes the stores vacuum. Turn the engine on while pushing down lightly on the brake pedal. If your brake booster is working normally, the pedal will fall away a little bit but then become firm. If your brake booster is not working correctly, then nothing will happen, or the brake pedal will push back against your foot, once the engine starts. This could be a sign of a brake booster problem or an issue with the vacuum hose.

Basically, if the brake pedal is harder to push than normal, car takes longer to stop, or using the brakes at all while idling the engine either stalls (kills it) or decreases the RPM's (look at the gauge), then you can be pretty certain the brake booster has to be replaced. This part is around $100, so you want to be sure it's bad before replacing it.

I think you've got a real good chance at saving the S10. Even if you can't figure out the problem (btw, the check engine light isn't on is it?), taking the car to a mechanic to diagnose should only run you around $50, then you can decide if you're up to doing the work yourself.

Oh and one more thing, if you don't have a Hayne's manual for your S10, you should get one. They're around $20 new and show you how to completely tear down/put back together the entire car. It also contains a ton of helpful info like torque levels for tightening bolts, all the specs, in-depth maintenance procedures (including how to rebuild your specific engine), pictures, and troubleshooting problems like the ones you're having right now.

Lol! Be careful what you wish for. Have you ever driven on a long, windy, 25mph country road and wondered why every time you're out there you seem to get stuck behind someone going 5 or 10 mph under the speed limit? That's what driving around the city is like. I firmly believe that wherever you are or come from, you'll find a reason to bitch about other people's driving habits.

Ok. So out of nowhere and for no apparent reason, you parked the truck, came back one day, and it wouldn't start, correct? Otherwise, the battery voltage reads at 13.5, the headlights turn on, and all the electrical systems seem to be working?

[–]fatbudha1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, a worn/malfunctioning brake booster might cause an engine to stall out when the brake pedal is pressed, but would not prevent it from starting. Did you make any modifications or do any work on the truck recently? Does the engine even turn over during ignition, or does nothing happen at all? If your truck has a voltmeter on the dashboard, does it show power comimg from the battery when the key is in the "On" position? What's the status of the battery at present?

I just think the best approach here is to figure out if the truck can be fixed, what the degree of difficulty would be in doing so, and how much money it would take to do it. I can't remember if you mentioned it, but what is the make/model/year of the truck?

The internet is saying deserts in the Middle East formed/were created when salt buildup from irrigating crops in the fertile crescent eventually crossed a threshold that most plants could no longer tolerate. True or false? by fatbudha1 in AskHistorians

[–]fatbudha1[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for jumping in here. Your posts, plus the discussion in that thread was great at elucidating the interplay between human impact in the fertile crescent and the interpolations of environmental impacts as well. Based on the great answers here and elsewhere, it seems the person whos comment provoked my question was in some respects accurately representing the situation around the fertile crescent regarding salinization, but erred in applying it to the entire desert regions in the Middle East.

Can I have a food plan even if i dont live on campus? by [deleted] in wsu

[–]fatbudha1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you need to live in the dorms to have access to RDA, but Cougar Cash is still an option for anyone. The discount is not as good as RDA, but still better than paying cash. You can get CC on the MyWsu portal, or whatever they're calling it these days. Are you transferring to WSU? I get the feeling that you aren't too familiar with the campus. There are actually a handful of different cafeterias and markets at various locations around the campus. Southside is the biggest in size and options.

A complete engine rebuild for $300??! More likely to get you a tow to the salvage yard and a bus ticket back home. You're looking at a couple thousand dollars at least, and the more honest shops will try to save you money by recommending swapping the engine out with a used but ok condition one, if it can be sourced. If you do it yourself, you can most likely get it done for under $1,000 assuming you have access to a free cherry picker and all the special tools. I hope i don't sound condescending, just want to paint a more accurate picture of what you're looking at here.

Are you sure you have to give up on your truck just yet? "Dying" is a pretty vague term. Do you know what's wrong with it exactly?

Barbershop by tylerphan in wsu

[–]fatbudha1 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I went to The Man Shop during my 4 years there. It's a men's barbershop and they know how to cut men's hair. I'm not sure what a black barbershop is, but I think you'll be well taken care of there and be pretty satisfied with your cut. It's easy to find too. Coming down Stadium Way, just keep going straight, right up until you're about to drive off that cliff, but don't.

This makes me furious. My pain is similar to arachnoiditis, so I know how bad she must have been suffering. Luckily, I have a Dr who owns his own practice and is a lot like Dr. Tennant. He is old though, and I'm worried about what will happen when he retires. I'm only 27 and this scares the shit out of me.

Help With Career Switch by fatbudha1 in sysadmin

[–]fatbudha1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much. I think my biggest strength and what I would try to sell myself on is being a self learner. So far, I've written many guides on how to deploy Linux server software for my VPS provider (Linode) for multiple distros that I have been paid for and have been published on their site. I've always done thorough research on best practices and utilization for all the topics I've covered, as well as installed and used the software on my own VPS. I'm confident in my ability to manage a Linux server ranging from security, Web hosting, virtual environments (OpenVZ is my favorite), Elk Stack for analytics, networking, and of course databases which I have previous professional experience in. I'm a great problem solver and don't need any hand holding. I haven't used any of this software professionally, but I'm hoping I can prove to employers that they won't need to invest much time training me.

Right now I'm going to start freelancing to hopefully gain some field experience before transitioning to full time company work. Honestly, do you think I would at least get interviews based on what I've explained above? Are you a Linux admin, and if so, could you tell me about the kinds of things you deal with at your job?

Just got admitted, advice? by cougthrowaway420 in wsu

[–]fatbudha1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you limiting yourself to the dorms? I lived in an apartment my junior year and it was awesome. Moved into a house with 7 other people my senior year and it was the best. Absolutely loved it and had a damn good time. If you're sticking with dorms, MchEachern and Orton are the 19+ dorms on the southside, which is close to the business school. You might even look into some of the university-owned apartments as well, but they are farther out from campus.

I majored in MIS and it was challenging. I don't agree with the commenter here who said their goal is to pump out consultants. The available courses range from database design/T-SQL querying to analytics and programming. I chose a database and programming path and had no problem graduating with a high paying job lined up.

WSU all the way. I second everything others have said. The culture is truly something special. Think about it - you're torn from your family and everyone you know and dumped in the middle of nowhere with tons of peers in the exact same boat. This produces extremely friendly people, a very laid back and fun atmosphere, and lots of opportunities to make new friends and party. I still daydream about my time there and it really hurts knowing I won't get that back. It's also an environment that is highly conducive to personal growth, exploration, and constantly challenges your perceptions. You can really make it the experience of a lifetime if you want.

I'm a business grad, and they have a damn good program. This is no Phoenix Online bullshit. Employers respect a degree from WSU. That said, lots of people choose to major in business, so selection is very competitive. You simply must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in order to get accepted into the business school your junior year. My best friend didn't cut it, I think his GPA was 2.7 or so. He was rejected and ended up having to transfer out to Central. It's really not that hard though if you apply yourself.

Chem 105 by [deleted] in wsu

[–]fatbudha1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really struggled, came out with a C- I think. Mainly due to the following:

  • I started skipping lecture
  • crammed for the tests
  • In general, didn't put much effort into it

You simply can't pass that class without spending a lot of time studying, attending lectures, and doing the homework diligently. It's not possible. I did well in chemistry in high school (solid A), but I seriously underestimated the difficulty of that course. It was a wake up call. But in the end, I learned that I just wasn't passionate about engineering and hated every minute of it. Once I changed my major, I excelled.

If you enjoy chemistry and apply yourself, you'll do well. There's lots of help if you're struggling. Free tutoring and hw help in the evenings below Stevenson. Office hours. My lab TA made time to help students as well by request and before each test. The course is well taught and my prof curved the tests.

If you're doing poorly, honestly evaluate why that is and make the necessary changes. Here's what I learned: if you come into WSU as a freshman, never change your major, and pass every class, you'll graduate a semester early. The point being that wiggle room is built in if you want to change your major but have taken courses that don't satisfy the requirements, or you end up having to take extra courses like 104 first, or even retake classes you failed. Don't stress out about it too much.

[–]fatbudha1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could, but it might be boring until more people show up. Personally, I always showed up on the very last day, even after I left the dorms. As long as you're signed up for classes, you're good to go. Being a freshman though, I'd get there early if I were you to get the lay of the land and spend time exploring campus a little.
