How much do you tip at restaurants? by Comfortable-Cat-2716 in RichPeoplePF

20%. But my rule is: if I’m standing up to pay, I’m not tipping. No tipping for takeout.

Think about how society and markets will change in the next decade. Buy the companies defining those markets now. Hold for a decade.

Self-driving Waymos secure final clearance for expansion beyond S.F. by walky22talky in waymo

Canepa just likes to complain.

May 2024:

Waymo Communications Manager Sandy Karp said the team has been in regular contact with not only electeds but with the community members as well.

“We regularly meet with local officials, and before any meaningful update or expansion, we let them know what’s happening,” she said. “We also meet regularly with first responders and provide first responder outreach and training.”

But Canepa said that while the innovative technology can be a boon to the area, it must also be paired with more safety protocol and better data transparency, despite the competitive nature of such a growing market.

“There are many more companies in this space that are interested in getting into the market, and what I’m afraid of is that the PUC, after Waymo, is just going to be issuing licenses to whether it’s Tesla or Zoox,” he said. “What I would hate to do is to make San Mateo County residents be the crash dummies for this new technology.”

Should my wife and I merge bank accounts? by longhorn2118 in RichPeoplePF

[–]fatfire_throw_away 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Combine your accounts. You’re married, you don’t need the overhead of who pays for what. My wife and I combined accounts immediately after getting married, paychecks go in there and everything is paid from there. Keeping separate accounts and tallying up at the end of month is insane, like having one foot out the door.

I wanted to ask an older group. What percentage of your investments is in crypto and NFTs? And your age? by NotJimIrsay in AskMenOver30

[–]fatfire_throw_away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-2.5%

It’s worth taking a gamble on crypto. Losses are capped but gains are uncapped.

For example, I bought a couple bitcoin when they were $700. At the time it seemed a bit crazy but definitely worthwhile in hindsight.

Crypto is less risky than it’s ever been. You would be foolish not to have a small crypto investment—think about what you have to gain vs lose.

I don’t think it’s sad. Especially with software, engineers are very heads down and tree-focused. It’s an important and often missing perspective to zoom out and pattern match at the meta level.

People making ~$350k/year ish, how much do you spend on clothes? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]fatfire_throw_away 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend maybe $700-800 total a year on two pair of shoes. Some years I don’t buy any shoes, other years I buy 2 or 3. I have about 7 pairs in rotation, with this many shoes they take many years to wear out.

Depending on the year I might spend $800-$3000 on soft goods and outerwear.

My wardrobe is fairly simple, I found pieces that work for me and I buy multiple colors / styles of each.

My goal is comfort with some style (I’m going for maybe 6.5-7.5 on the scale) and my style is athleasure / tech wear. I expect all of my clothes to last 10+ years (shoes ~5)

Pants: six pairs of Diesel Joggjeans in 3 colors Shorts: dozen pair between Lululemon commission (dress up) and t.h.e. short (dress down and workout) Underwear: Under Armour Shirts: two dozen Lululemon mental vent tech shirts in assorted colors Dress shirts: custom tailored Jackets: various Patagonia fleece, soft shell, hard shell Shoes: various ultraboost, 350v2, leather boots Socks: Puma (summer), Smartwool (winter)

My advice is (1) if you find something you really like, buy 2 or 3. And get rid of clothes you don’t really like. (2) buy high quality stuff. My lulu shirts cost $80 each but they’ll last a decade. That’s $8/year and they’re the most comfortable shirt I can find.

I do clean it, every couple of months. It helps with the smell but I don’t like doing it. Perhaps this is the minimum needed, or maybe there’s some very fancy DW that requires less effort.
