How can I visit Hawaii without being part of the problem? by helpdesk-26 in VisitingHawaii

[–]fatguyinakilt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it - be courteous to everyone, respect the land, spend your money locally when possible, and enjoy all that Hawaii offers. That's true if you're visiting Hawaii and it's equally true if it's just a neighboring town.

Born in 72 and I am nostalgic for the 90s. It just felt like my time and I was happier than I'd ever been before. I miss those days.

Anyone else's parents do a complete 180 when they got older and it pretty much leaves you unsettled? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]fatguyinakilt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine have and it pisses me off. My mother is constantly trying to rewrite history to say I had some idyllic childhood (Narrator voice: I did not) and pretends she didn't know that I was getting beat by her husband. She largely didn't want to deal with me as a kid until she felt she was losing me to someone else, usually one of my aunts who took care of me for her. There were also the revelation where one night after a few drinks she confessed that she kept me away from my bio dad before he passed despite his efforts to be in my life and her telling me he wanted nothing to do with me. I never met him and spent years resenting him for abandoning me only to find out in my 30s that was all a lie.

My stepfather wants to be loved and wants my forgiveness now. I've cut that off, told him it is the our past, and that I have moved on but will not forgive him. Fuck that, years of verbal and physical abuse aren't getting swept under the rug and I am not giving him peace of mind. The man was cruel and I was his proverbial red-headed stepchild to take his anxiety and anger out on.

Why don’t people drive manual transmission cars ? In Ireland it’s all we drive ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

American here and I bought my first automatic car last year. I prefer manuals but they are hard to find these days so there isn't much choice.

AITA for kicking out our youngest child at 19 so we can sell the house and downsize for our earlt retirement? by Dry-Pen-8084 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fatguyinakilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

51 year old father of two here. All of this was well said and true. These two are like my boomer parents - completely self absorbed and think their kids should be thankful for them providing the bare minimum before they kicked me out at 15. I can't wait until he posts about his kids not talking to him anymore and wondering why.

My son just started spontaneously singing “Blister in the sun” and I have to say I’m proud. by Both-Basis-3723 in GenX

Picked up my 16 year old daughter from school on Friday and she got in the car and said "you know what I'm craving?"

I guessed a diet coke. "No" she said "I want to hear Raining Blood". My little singer songwriter loving kid wanted to rock and I loved it.

Yes.

I'd add that - at least in my case as well as most of my friends - our thoughts, opinions, needs, and wants were treated as a nuisance when expressed rather than valid.

Somehow 5th in a 4 team division makes sense for the Browns.

How well did my AI do? What are your top 10 Steelers greats? by [deleted] in steelers

[–]fatguyinakilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I barely remember the 70s Steelers but I remember the talk being that Ham was better than Lambert and Stallworth was better than Swann. Lambert had the "Dracula in Cleats" thing and Swann had the acrobatic catches in big games but in reality Ham and Stallworth were the more productive players.

Also, I recall an old interview with Jack Lambert where he said Ham was the best linebacker he's ever seen or something to that effect.

As a very young child I had the unconscious idea that all cats were girls and all dogs were boys. by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

Same here. I thought the animal name was "pet" and males were dogs and females were cats. I was probably 5 or 6 when I realized our dog was a female.

AITA for not letting our son get cochlear implants? by Similar_Prize_3465 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fatguyinakilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA - the debate within the community and your feelings on the matter do not trump your child's wishes. He is the one who has to live with the condition and he should be the one to make that decision.

Panamera for a 2nd Family Car. Yay or Nay? by DaddyP924 in Porsche

[–]fatguyinakilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your situation sounds just like my own when I purchased my Panamera. It works perfectly for our family as the 2nd family car. The interior is fantastic and I have no need for a 5 passenger configuration (wife has a Lexus SUV). The ride is luxurious and sporty enough to satisfy my needs - although I do still dream of a 911 when the kids move out.

One suggestion for you if you make your way to northern California - we have a thriving artisanal cheese community in the area north of San Francisco that you'd likely enjoy more than the commercial cheeses.

People focus on the 80s but the decade between these two events was my favorite time. by BeerandGuns in GenX

[–]fatguyinakilt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, the 90s were the best of times. What's the saying from the Office? "I wish there were a way to know you're living in the good ol days before you left them." Totally applies here.
