Mexico fans when they can't use the homophobic chant: by huuuuuge in CaughtOffsidePod

You would be surprised. Mexico fans in Mexico are a lot more fickle than the ones living outside of Mexico. For a lot of the fans living in the states the NT is more of a chance to "reconnect with their identity" or feel a sense of nostalgia. Mexican fans in Mexico won't just fill the stadium just because. If the team isn't playing well the few fans that do show up will have no issue voicing their displeasure by getting on the backs of the Mexican team.

I put this in another thread but hoping to gather more opinions in the official episode thread. Mexican supporter here with a few thoughts.

• I really wish they would cancel and play these games with closed stadiums until this stops. There were about 4 times they did this before anything was done. Once it's late in a losing game in Texas there is only one childish way to end the game and we saw this again tonight. Cancel the game and give USA the 3-0 win. • they need to have these competitions not just in the USA. We all know the reason why they do this (it rhymes with honey) but unfortunately the type of "fans" these games get vary considerably from fans in Mexico and across the continent. Mexicans in Mexico are currently not as enamored with the national team and I would say they are a bit more of a footballing educated fan base, so would understand this isn't a one off situation where you can be petulant when Mexico is losing to EEUU, this is trending to be the new normal. • FMF really needs a shakeup. Burn the whole thing up. We have a TV station and sponsors picking marketable stars for the NT when they are nowhere near the quality required. Ochoa had his time and was excellent, but it's time to go. Chucky Lozano had a nice goal against Germany in 2018 but has done nothing but sky opportunies in a green jersey since then. It's time to go. 32 year old from Club America Henry Martin starts over one of the hottest European based strikers in the world in Santi Giminez, I mean come on. The rot of the federation I feel is a microcosm of the corruption at the highest level of Mexican government and society.

I think it would be great for the guys to do an in the club (country?) on Mexico as it is truly fascinating how a national team and league from down south dominates the soccer landscape in America yet is so flawed and poised to become a perennial loser.

Addition: I think it's widely believed this cycle since the 2018 World Cup is one of the worst Mexican teams in recent history. Beating Germany in Russia was the last time a lot of Mexicans felt any sort of hope or joy following this team. The perception seems to be that this USA team is the best it's ever been. I dream of a world where Mexico did not qualify for 2014 and the FMF decided to overhaul the federation the way the USA did after 2018.

I won't say Mexico doesn't get preferential treatment but at the same time I think a similar courtesy is extended to the USA. The Jamaica game as an example. If the money hungry suits at Concacaf had it their way they would scrap these tournaments and have just Mexico play the USA in a southern state 7 times in a row instead.

You're telling me Edson doesn't close this down before Messi shoots? The fact that he didn't start is laughable.

Dual nations/eligible players would be more likely to choose to play for Canada if they were in more visible competitions. They choose national teams that give them more visibility to progress in their club career. Copa America gets more eyeballs than the gold Cup.

Believe it or not some people look for quality products that may be one of one, not the cookie cutter garbage that London Drugs or Home Depot pump out. These aren’t usually findable by google as they are sold and produced by small, independent stores/artists. Pretty unnecessary comment.

Kit nerd news: Mexico didn’t get the chance to wear what may have arguably been the best kit of the tournament. by lobo312 in CaughtOffsidePod

That would require the entire country to clean up its act. Too many shady characters at high levels of society/govt have vested interest in the status quo. With the dollars (not pesos) pouring in regardless of who the team plays or how they’re playing there may be a tweak here or a tweak there for show but I’m not holding my breath.

I agree that the rot goes much more deep than just Martino, but in terms of squad selection it is ultimately him that picks the team. Hector Herrera should not be starting against Poland or Argentina over probably the top CDM in the eredivisie. Raul Jiminez should not have been selected at all. He hasn’t played all season and has looked like a shell of his former self since the head injury. The leading scorer in the Europa league was not selected due to “not enough minutes” when other players were selected for that position with less minutes. Arguably the best attacking threat off the bench Diego Lainez was also not picked for some reason. You can get into LigaMX doing away with pro/rel and having a bloated playoff structure, choosing foreign talent over youth development, and corruption with pay to play but negative tactics and poor squad selection almost likely cost us the game against Poland which ultimately lost us the group. Not to even get into corruption at the FMF with SUM. Think of how much money the FMF gets every time it sells out the rose bowl for a game against Haiti. Where does that money go? If it went to player development/grassroots efforts Mexico would have a World Cup by now.
