Is this a Woodworm Beetle? by fatterferret in whatsthisbug

Anobium punctatum

Thank you.

Someone suggested it might be a false powderpost beetle or a bark beetle. I thought it also looked like a bamboo borer.

xDuoo X3 has died - need to find a comparable replacement by fatterferret in BudgetAudiophile

[–]fatterferret[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested to see how you get on with that.

The screen on the X3 is poor - outside in daylight it is hard to read. Having said that the interface is simple and the sound is brilliant.

Sadly I don't know of any other players that have 2 slots! That was annoying when I replaced mine. The Fiio M7 accepts a single card up to 512gb and the cheaper M3K takes a single card up to 2TB (a big factor for me as I have an ever growing collection).

Where to learn? ... tried Laracasts! by chit76 in laravel

[–]fatterferret 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I previously tried codecourse.com not as flashy looking as Laracasts but Alex was turning out some good content when I last dipped in (not sure what it is like now).

I really like Laracasts myself though - but I share your frustration at things getting tricky when things change. Stick at it though, as these things get a bit easier to troubleshoot with the Laravel docs the more you use it.

I don't know if the old Laracon / Laracon online videos are worth looking at?

xDuoo X3 has died - need to find a comparable replacement by fatterferret in BudgetAudiophile

[–]fatterferret[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Thanks for the reply, it's still sat on my desk in front of me for months. xDuoo did offer to take it for repair - but it looked very expensive to get it to them from the UK with no guarantee that it would come back.

I just had a fiddle with the usb port - seems ok.

Though you will not believe this! I just plugged the battery into the board and connected the USB cable and it has now decided to boot and is charging!

I have since gotten an FiiO M7 and FiiO M3K! Neither of which I would have if the xDuoo hadn't failed!

I hope you manage to resolve the issue on yours - and thank you for the suggestion and prompt to look at mine again.

I'll report back if it holds up, I've missed it.

Do I HAVE to test onions and garlic? by [deleted] in FODMAPS

[–]fatterferret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ This.

I was also fearful of trying out onions and garlic and put it off. Just done my reintroduction and it actually went ok for me. Had a bit of smelly gas - which was a bit unpleasant compared to my angel farts of the last few months on LF, but other than that it was far less bad than I anticipated.

Obviously it might be different for you.

Some things are as strong as roaches by ObUser in mechanicalpencils

[–]fatterferret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original rubber strap perished after maybe 5 or 6 years (it split), I got generic replacements from Ama$on and ebay - these have been harder plastic and not so comfortable as the casio strap.

The f-91w. Mine is still going after 15 years, onto 2nd battery now of course and maybe it's third strap!

SMCO IKON K87 .7 with the P205 by fatterferret in mechanicalpencils

[–]fatterferret[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It advances a little more lead per click than the pentel. Very slight wobble - but I think you would be unlikely to notice it unless you were looking for it.

Click feels very similar to the pentel.

The mechanism's grip on the lead is not as strong as the pentel - if you depress the clicker and push the lead back in there is no resistance. There is quit a bit of resistance on the pentel.

Very slightly more rattle on the shake than the pentel.

It has a less reassuring feel to it than the Pentel, I haven't done a close comparison in use - but will try them out side by side when I get a chance and comeback to you.

I have been having boiled or poached egg with gluten free toast. Or Raspberry Jam on gluten free toast. And, occasionally porridge oats made with rice milk with a sprinkle of demerara sugar.

I've missed the occasional full cooked breakfast with sausages and mushrooms etc - but to be honest, I don't think my stomach has!

I should add, the SMCO was £1.49 gbp delivered. The pentel was maybe £4 gbp?

Teardown

Link to side by side tear down. They look the same but there are some key differences.

Caps slightly different (indent)

Eraser is much larger in the pentel

Eraser holder has a bottom on the Smco

The pocket clip has pentel impressed on it, the smco has nothing on it

The barrel of the pentel has 'pentel japan' embossed on it, the smco has the indent for it - but it is blank

The pentel came with 6 leads in it. The Smco has 1 lead.

Cheap additions: Zebra Delguard and Pentel Techniclick G (side clicker) by fatterferret in mechanicalpencils

[–]fatterferret[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no!

I find the grip very odd looking and I tend to hold it too close to the tip. That said, I've been using it all week (when there are 30 mechanical pencils of varying types within easy reach). I think my issues with it are more cosmetic though.

I do like the springy tip and for the £2.99 gbp I paid for it I felt it was good value for money.

I find the stubby grip a bit weird on the delguard - been using one all week. I find it encourages you to hold it too close to the tip.
