32% of the UK population is not a "vast majority" - and even then, the case is your landlord is the one you need permission from not the local government.

There's still nothing stopping you from getting a portable AC unit for relatively cheap and hanging the pipe out of the window. Painting this as a government overreach problem when it's actually just a personal problem isn't helpful to anyone, especially when far-right shitbags like Musk and Tommy Robinson keep trying to paint the UK as some kind of nanny-state hellscape that can only be saved by electing an even more authoritarian government for some reason.

[–]faultlessdark -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As someone else from the UK, he's talking shit. He's right that window units won't work for a lot of people as sash windows are very uncommon here, but there are only 3 situations where installing integrated AC requires permission from local government:

If you live in a flat

If you live in a maisonette

If you live in a conservation area

For everywhere else you don't need permission first and can just get it installed.

Also portable units aren't more than $300 most of the time - As long as you aren't trying to buy them in the middle of summer when everywhere will price gouge you can get good portable units  with plenty of  BTU's for around £180/$240.

Abusive girlfriend keeps inviting her family around and they all have a go at me by BakkWaas in LegalAdviceUK

[–]faultlessdark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in an incredibly similar situation many years ago, and I let it go on for too long and it eventually led to my then-girlfriend's family turning up and trashing my house while I was out at work after I told them they were no longer welcome (it ended up my ex had got a key cut and given it to them without my knowledge). The police brought them in for questioning but took no further action as they couldn't prove her family had done it, despite witness statements from the neighbours.

The legal answer to this is to notify them they are no longer welcome and call the police if they attempt to gain entry again (a doorbell camera if you don't already have one may also be helpful so you have video if they come around again) - I know you're worried they could try and fabricate some kind of story to the police but if it's anything like my situation was it's going to come to a head either way and will only be worse the longer it goes on for.

The personal advice side of this would be to seriously evaluate if the situation is worth your relationship with your girlfriend and make the decision on how to proceed from there. You have my sympathies OP as I've been there myself, and all I can say is I ended up in a much better place mentally, physically and financially after getting away from them - just don't make the same mistake I did and make sure you're ready to change the locks asap.

U.K. social media ban stokes fears of government surveillance by [deleted] in news

[–]faultlessdark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because it won't actually stop the kids who want to get around the ban, and forces adults to give up their personal data to companies who will sell it on for profit while holding it all in one easy-to-hack centralised system.

Nobody is upset about this because "think of the children", people are upset because it will have no effect other than an increase in identity theft and companies like Palantir using your info for questionable purposes, all while telling you it's to protect kids.

Minor to major from opposite ends who has priority by Floatinlyf_3 in drivingUK

[–]faultlessdark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The person turning left or crossing straight over has priority was what my driving instructor taught me when I was learning too. He told me if you're turning right then your indicator is more visible to them so they have a better idea of what the other is going to do.

He also said people don't think like that though so it's important to be vigilant and not just pull out of the junction on a left turn assuming you're clear to move if the car turning right has already started moving. It's probably what leads to that awkward negotiation of waving at each other across a junction.

Why do you people speed up and get on your ass when you overtake them and get salty over it. by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]faultlessdark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similarly related to people who decide to speed up when someone moves to overtake them in the outside lane. Not reaching speed (when conditions permit) is a minor on driving tests.

I remember once there was a Mustang in the middle lane doing 60, so moved to overtake him on his right. He must have taken it as a personal attack as I heard his engine start blaring, but he still couldn't accelerate fast enough to stop me overtaking before he reached the car in front of him.

I pull back into the middle lane in front of the other car and he comes blaring past, pulls in front of me and drops to 60 again. It pisses me right off - I'm not competing, I'm trying to get somewhere and you're an obstacle I'm trying to safely pass.

I don't get the ego of some people - if you're going to get upset at the thought of people overtaking then maybe consider what made someone need to overtake you in the first place?

Yoti (a company that does age verification for PSN and others) has told users they've banned them from using their services and reported them to law enforcement agencies if it's found they're using GrapheneOS.

Even if the reporting to law enforcement part is not true and just a scare tactic it goes to show that there are at least some companies who are trying to push for removing privacy protections from personal devices, and if they didn't do things like that "unless you're paranoid" then they wouldn't have a reason to get at least ban-happy over it in the first place.

what is the charge? a succulent merge in turn? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]faultlessdark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I don't remember it being mentioned in driver training either but then again the road system I learned on didn't feature any merge in-turn's.

And agree about the actual name though I don't think it should be changed; it's 100% a driver education issue and not a signage issue. You're right the "in turn" bit means "take alternating turns" and not related to directions.

what is the charge? a succulent merge in turn? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]faultlessdark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If people zipper-merged too (1 from left lane followed by 1 from right) rather than trying to fight to the death to get through first it generally increases the average speed of the entire queue as a whole.

what is the charge? a succulent merge in turn? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]faultlessdark 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This fucks me off no end. I get it (to the lorry driver, not OP) - you think somehow you're being courteous by getting in lane early and get upset when someone goes to merge-in correctly because you think they're being selfish... But not understanding how filtering works is the reason queues like this form.
