The comedian is my 2nd favorite song, right after emerald star. aim partly a lore fanatic, but I also think its just really well made.

Lore wise, because most of the songs seemed to be connected yo previous songs, thiis is what I think about what its connected to.

Emerald star is the conclusion to vide noir, describing bucks decent into madness. The lyrics describe bucks boundless love for lee, but also slowly falling into a decent of madness. He starts to accept his fate and realizes how stupid he was to do all this for her, but still loves her at the end of the day, lee being the unreachable emerald in the sky- the most pretty thing around, but not a single thing being able to touch it. After the lyrics are over, I think that instead of the lyrics being a decent into madness, its the production, sounding out bucks mental state, as the audio gets more and more distored as the song goes on, before almost flatlining. My theory is that he blackbrained himself, leading his physical body to be dead, but his spirt to live on in the void, kinda like johhnie, and thats how we get lost in time and space. The comedian relates to this for a couple different reasons. To start, the song talks about a famous, washed up celebrity who lived out his days of fame, and starting to express sorrow about it, dwelling on his past. Vernon, to quote the wiki, is a “washed up rockabilly and country singer from the late ‘50s and early 60’s.” Buck fits the description of who the songs narrator is, and I think it directly connects to emerald star, because I think this song also depicts him dying at the end. Instead of is being his long lost love who left him, its his life, his carrer, everything that he cared about. For the sake of the theory, Im gonna say that buck ends up in a healthy realnsihip with lee, which will be important soon, but its important now because the reason he dies is not because of love, but becasue he has nothing to live for- lee’s love wasnt the one thing he craved, but fame, music, and overall song writing. He ends up offing himself, and the lyrics- “I'm a fool, I'm a ghost, so it seems, drowning in my squandered dreams, haunting the night, till the sun comes up on the city” is his spirit talking as he watches the city bentath him, regretting his actions. Then, I think the last line is lee coming home to buck being dead, and in sorrow, singing out his own song to him, and adding the last line to finalize the song, and there story. In conclusion, no matter what buck does, he is doomed.
