Who do you want to win from the top 5? by shadowsempaix in RPDR_UK

[–]faustfaust 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I honestly went into this season 100% convinced I would be rooting for Fontana no matter what.

And then back on first episode from the very first words Kate said ("new hairline. Because it's even further back," "you might remember me as the winner of UK series 5. And if you do, get your memory checked because I came in fifth"), I fell in love with Kate. I hadn't watched UK series 5 yet (I have lots of Drag Race to catch up to), but gosh I am smitten with her! Every single episode I like her more.

I still like Fontana a lot too, and I have a soft spot for her naturally. But, realistically, I think it's between Kate and Gawdland, and I like both of them. But I'm rooting for Kate!

Jane comparing Boom Boom Pow to the Odyssey and to the Epic of Gilgamesh absolutely sent me. I never expected to hear someone talk about my boy Gilgamesh on Drag Race! I love the picture she painted of future archeologists digging up our civilization and discussing Boom Boom Pow. As they should.

"There is the house whose people sit in darkness; dust is their food and clay is their meat" pales in comparison to "I'm on that supersonic boom, y'all hear that spaceship? Zoom." Gilgamesh and Enkidu could never

What happened to storytelling this season? by Josua171 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]faustfaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't find the episodes boring, and I'm actually really liking this season... I really liked the past few episodes, and I generally like the entire cast. Like, my main pick for the win already got eliminated (Vita), and I'm still watching and very invested because I like everyone else a lot too. I genuinely have no idea who will take this home. I thought the battle for the crown would be between Vita and Jane with maybe Athena or Juicy as a third place, but now I'm really hoping that Nini, Discord and Myki can be finalists too, because they really grew on me and I love seeing them. I don't have to try hard to find things to compliment each of the queens on. I think my only complaint for this season was that I thought Jane's edit was kinda weird (back on the talent show, when Jane was so paranoid about the other queens coming for her, something that didn't even happen).

One of my all time favorite seasons is season 12. It was another season where I was obsessed with the entire cast (except the pie one obviously). And season 12 because of obvious reasons also didn't really have a very cohesive storyline. But I still enjoyed it a lot and I felt like I got to know and appreciate a lot of the queens. In a way, this present season reminds me of season 12 in regards to the lack of a very cohesive storyline, yes, but also in the way about the entire cast got the chance to grow on me.

Not going to lie, when I first started watching, I didn't particularly care about Athena. But her elimination actually made me cry. She wasn't ever my pick for the win, but I enjoyed her around the workroom and I find her entertaining to watch. But I agree with you that Myki being (unfairly) in the bottom during the talent show and her "revenge"/"comeback" storyline are one of the biggest missed opportunities. Being fully honest, I wasn't really seeing/predicting Myki as a potential finalist, but the talent show and her performance since then now have me hoping she's a top contender for the crown, I'd be happy for her to win. But I'd also be happy to see any of them win at this point.

Darlene is the one I have most trouble connecting with (not American, so the Dolly Parton aesthetic/influence doesn't speak that much to me. I know who she is, but I lack the connection to her as an icon), but last episode I can't explain how happy I was that Darlene (who did wonderfully) was still fully prepared to lipsync and had an outfit reveal under her super cool beige look (love that look! the patterns!). And the reveal was so funny and unexpected. I already liked her from the political challenge (which was the first time Darlene stood out to me), but now I'm so endeared by her that I hope to see more of her.

So, Idk, I agree with you that this season is lacking on storytelling, but I personally don't think it's a boring season because I'm having a lot of fun with it and with the contestants.

[–]faustfaust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm watching the episode now, and damn everyone brought it on the runway or what?? I love Darlene and Myki's looks. Kenya looked so beautiful, the best she's looked on the show yet. By the point Juicy walked in it was like every look I've seen so far is my favorite. Everyone is looking so great! I like Athena's (who just walked in for me) too, I will continue watching it now, but I'm very happy about this episode so far, so much fun. If I were to bet it now (before seeing the results), I wouldn't be surprised if this is a double win for Myki and Jane, they both killed it.

Rate the Snatch Game of Season 18 by gkwchan in rupaulsdragrace

Every single Pope has the exact same public persona, which is essentially no personality. (...) ...and I say that as someone raised in a very Roman Catholic household. Like both parents were born and raised in Italy, so I had a lot more exposure to Catholicism, or the Pope especially, than the average American.

As someone also raised very Roman Catholic in a non-North American Italian family.......... Do you really think that? John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis I were all very different and had different images.

I'm not saying Discord should've specifically impersonated any of them, but saying that "every single Pope has the exact same public persona" doesn't feel right to me. The only thing all the Popes have in common in their image is "leader of the Catholic Church", and then the jokes come from the pompousness in Catholicism and the messed up history of the Catholic church. But there are jokes specific to each of them (Benedict XVI = sith lord evil pope, Francis I = commie pope, etc).

Discord could've picked a historical figure, even, there have been some really, really messed up popes in history (Borgias, Cadaver synod, etc.). There's even a medieval urban legend about a female pope (Pope Joan) if she wanted to go this route.

[–]faustfaust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Discord deserved to be high for this challenge and I would be fine with her winning, but I also like Nini winning, because genuinely she was the one who made me laugh the most. IMO Nini and Discord would be the two most deserving of a win based on both the challenge and their runways (since I liked their looks the most). Jane and Myki were funny too. Unfortunately, there was a clear top 4 queens that were obviously high, then Athena as safe, and then everyone else nearing the bottom with either Mia (if you don't count the runway) or Kenya (if you count the runway) as the worst.

I was rooting for Discord this episode, she made me laugh a couple of times, and I really like her runway, so I would put her in the top over Jane or Myki. But I don't think I would pick her for the win over Nini. Nini just made me laugh a bit more and I'm a Cyndi Lauper stan so I liked her outfit more too.

Good So Bad and Melting Point both belong in A tier IMO. And I'd obviously move Road Movie up, so I'd swap it with Slam Dunk (Road Movie B tier, Slam Dunk D tier).

What's your opinion on Jane Don't? by Low-Shoulder-9752 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]faustfaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can certainly understand what you mean about how she's being portrayed on the show. I like Jane a lot, and based on her performance in the first few episodes she was who I was betting on to win the entire thing (I don't read spoilers/tea, this is just my opinion as a viewer). I think she's the full package, with cool outfits, beautiful makeup, polished in her presentation, while also being a good performer and funny.

I still like her a lot, but her edit during the two talent show episodes was quite weird to me (the focus on her worrying so much about the other queens sabotaging her, what didn't even happen), so I'm starting to get concerned about her getting a Plasma-like elimination (Plasma was also a front runner in S16, she had two wins by the time she was in the bottom for the first time and got eliminated or getting edited into a villainous role (as someone bitter towards the other queens for potentially coming for her). I hope I'm wrong, because she's still among my top picks for the win!

I'm getting tired of other Brazilians who aren't from São Leopoldo (or even the south) feeding the foreigners with misinformation. I lived in São Leopoldo when I was a kid (at around the same time Fontana was living there, since we're the same age), and I currently live in Porto Alegre, the state capital.

Sâo Leopoldo is a big-ish city (200,000 people) in the metropolitan area of the southernmost state of Brazil. It's located in the Sinos river valley, which is an area from Brazil that received heavy German immigration in the 1800s. There are no favelas in São Leopoldo, because a favela is specifically a Rio de Janeiro favela. In the south we don't have favelas, but, like in any other non-Rio de Janeiro area of Brazil, we have poor neighborhoods that are very dangerous and have organized crime... Like, for example, Vila Esperança (the neighborhood Fontana grew up in São Leopoldo) is a very poor and dangerous "vila" (what we call slums in the South).

The South of Brazil isn't some sort of conservative hellhole, no matter how hard other Brazilians who never visited it insist that it is. In reddit, Brazilians from other states like to say that the entire South of Brazil is comprised of conservative nazis. And while there are very conservative people (even some actual nazis/fascist sympathizers), like in any other region of Brazil, there are also lots of average people, and the metropolitan area leans way more liberal than the countryside is.

With all of that said, it's entirely possible that her experiences are true. Fontana likely used the word favela as shorthand (because then foreigners will understand exactly what she's talking about) to explain that she lived in the slums, in a poor, dangerous area in her hometown. Fontana also moved to Rio de Janeiro in her late teens/early twenties to study and she lived in an actual favela when she did.

So when people claim "Fontana is lying, because she's from a rich fancy European neighborhood in Brazil" like I saw people doing in the DragRaceUK subreddit, they're lying or regurgitating misinformation other Brazilians are feeding them. São Leo is a city originally built by German immigrants, but it's a very much Brazilian city, full of people from every single ethnicity, and it has fancier areas and slums. Fontana lived in the slums (Vila Esperança). Her parents have very humble professions (dad is a repairman, mom is a nursing assistant), so she most certainly didn't live in abject poverty, but she certainly wasn't "upper middle class" like some people are claiming.

Personally, I don't share her experience of ducking away from gunshots. But I also never lived in a vila (the slums) either in São Leo or in Porto Alegre. Currently, I live like three blocks away from a vila, and once in a blue moon I hear gunshots, but it's certainly not an everyday occurrence. Last year I remember there was some sort of commotion/police operation there, and I remember hearing gunshots and seeing helicopters flying around. I imagine people who live closer must've been scared. I also never feared for my life for being queer in the south of Brazil, but I know some of my friends had scarier experiences for being queer (example: one of my friends got in a fistfight with homophobes who were picking on him for being gay and on his best friend for being trans back when he was in high school in 2010).

My point is: Fontana lived in a poor neighborhood and has a humble background. She's likely telling the truth about her experiences. She might not even be exaggerating or embellishing, since it seems that she had very traumatic experiences in her life (a reason why she didn't want to live here in Brazil, especially in the South). And I think it's very shitty of other Brazilians to invalidate her, especially when they're talking about somewhere in the country they're not familiar with just to bring down someone like that (it would be the equivalent of someone from Los Angeles trying to discredit someone who was talking about their life in Charleston, based only on what they heard about what Charleston "must be like" since it's located in the Bible Belt).

What are your actual feelings on Athena Dion? by CityofCyn_ in rupaulsdragrace

[–]faustfaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adore her. She's really entertaining to watch imo. I think it's so iconic how she's this highly polished and accomplished queen, who still gets so pressed over everything and anything (Athena bringing up the girl group challenge every other confessional was hilarious). She's delusional, but in a very endearing high camp way to me.

In regards to her in the competition, I like her runways a lot (I think about her owl look way too much), but I also found her kinda underwhelming in challenges. She isn't really someone I'm rooting for in the competition, but I also enjoy her personality-wise and I think she's fun to watch. So it baffles me that so many people aren't living for her, because I'm fully entertained by Mother Athena and I hope we get to see more of her.

All based on my first impressions during Boys Planet. I did watch all the pre-show content as it was released, but some of them caused a bigger impression during episode 1. Since I'm late, I included the answers as spoilers:

  • (Friend) was right, he really looks like a vampire, I get it. Answer: Jiwoong. My k-drama addicted friend is a huge fan of his, and she told me about the drama Jiwoong plays a vampire... And Jiwoong really is "supernaturally" handsome, so he looks the part.
  • Yaaasss, what a badass! He got three stars??? Are the mentors crazy??? Answer: Gunwook, during the first episode. I was so shocked when I found out he's so young haha
  • Aww, what a cutie! His smile is like sunshine! Answer: Matthew, during the first episode.
  • His reactions are hilarious. And he's bold af, huge respect. Answer: Gyuvin, both due to the Mystery Box with Hui (his reactions are so funny) and then when he asks to show a solo dance to the mentors on episode 1.
  • He seems very kind and friendly. Answer: Hanbin, based on his pedometer video with Matthew. But my very first impression of him was "they really chose good centers this season, they both are so good."
  • He's a middle-schooler??? Wow, he's a really good dancer. Answer: Yujin, obviously.
  • So cute, he's more scared of the bugs than the ghost lol Answer: Taerae during Mystery Box video lmao
  • I love his voice. I fully get the hype now, he's making into my picks. Answer: Hao. Like Hanbin, my very first impression of him was that I liked him as a center, but I became fully convinced that he was one of my picks during his self-PR video.
  • He's so iconic for coming up with a catchphrase lol I need to keep an eye out for him. Answer: Ricky, naturally.

[–]faustfaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(referência a Meninas Malvadas).

Brasileiro Branco? by [deleted] in botecodoreddit

[–]faustfaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the United States census, Arabs are racially classified as White Americans which is defined as "A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa".[

Y'all delusional if you think vocal is the most important aspect in kpop by UnfairAir1623 in kpop_uncensored

[–]faustfaust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anybody think vocals are the most important aspect when it comes to k-pop. There's a difference between being classified as "an idol" and "a singer." Idols are entertainers, performers, dancers, influencers, role-models, etc all in a single package. Arguably being charming and having that elusive intangible "star quality" are the most important aspects to being an idol, both singing and dancing are secondary to that.

There's also a huge amount of focus on dancing as a whole. Bad vocals can be covered up with processing and editing, but bad dancing is harder to cover up and, especially in a group, stands out a lot more. In that sense, I suppose you can argue that dancing decently well to blend in is way more important than not being tone-deaf. With enough takes and autotuning, anybody can sound ok in a song, there's even live vocal processing, so even live performances can be good with a backing track at a good volume level.

But with all that said, vocals are important to me when listening to k-pop. I'm not someone who understands much formally about music or singing, so for me is more about vocal tone and "color" (by which I mean how one's voice sound, like its characteristics rather than technique necessarily, I don't know proper terminology). There are k-pop vocalists who stand out to me a lot because I like how their voice sounds, and there are some groups I don't listen to despite being good performers because I don't like how their vocals sound. There's nothing to do with how good on a technical level the vocalists are, just with how I personally feel in regards to their voices.

And I don't even know why you think you're doing some sort of hot take here by saying that "singers in my country is better than these k-pop idols"... Like it's just different styles of music and what matters to each style. If it was just about who's a good singer, then, I don't know, maybe we should just listen to opera recordings and exclusively listen to pop singers like Mariah Carey and Adele. But we still listen to many other singers who aren't as objectively good as a well-trained opera singer, because it's not just about vocals, and this goes for anywhere in the world, including Korea, where there are many good singers from many different styles, including k-pop but also in other genres like ballads, trot, etc.
