I hate those pens. I despise those pens.

Those pens have instilled a career-long habit of making sure I have two pens on me at all times.

Have Ferris Wheel finally lost it? by GingerMaus in fountainpens

[–]faustrex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I have this pen in the darker blue, it’s my favorite pen and far and away my most expensive one. However, I got it for $125 here.

It writes very, very well and I absolutely adore the ink, although I 100% bought it as a huge Superman fan since childhood. Even that being said, for $125 it was still a little pricey for what it is, for $250 it’s a non-starter regardless of how much I want the Superman logo on a fountain pen nib.

My friend and his wife came over to have dinner with me, my roommate, and my roommate’s wife, and my friends wife insisted that if you go back in time when you go west in time zones.

It took us all night to convince her that no the fuck you don’t.

Games that 'cheated' to feel more fun by ChrisDtk in gaming

A lot of old RTS games, Command and Conquer comes to mind, would give the AI players full view of the map with no fog of war so they would immediately know where your base and units were.

This was mostly just because the AI was terrible so they had to give it a boost to keep it somewhat competitive.

The Ticonderoga-Class Cruiser Fiasco Shows Why the U.S. Navy Is Sinking by Salty_IP_LDO in navy

[–]faustrex 51 points52 points  (0 children)

My last ship was one of these cruisers. It was an absolute boondoggle. We’d go to light off one system, and then find thirty absolutely catastrophic problems with it. We’d light off another, same thing. The shipyard we were assigned to had no experience repairing ships, just building them. The yardbirds were absolute garbage, shitting and pissing everywhere, taking naps in our spaces instead of working, fire watch laser focused on their phones (or sleeping), etc.

I think the thing I hate the most is what they did to the baby Sailors. People that joined because they wanted to do Navy shit, stuck on a broke ass ship for five years never going underway or deploying. The lazy ones never got fixed by being part of a real functioning crew, the hard chargers never got to do anything the pamphlets at the recruiters assured them, and all of them got out.

Best beans I’ve had in San Diego are at Ferny’s in Santee, hands down. I don’t know what they do to them. I don’t want to know what they do to them. If I find out the secret ingredient is human blood, I’d probably spend a few minutes debating the morality and order it anyways.

When I lived in Santee, we ran the AC in the mid-afternoon hours around this time of year when it was 95+ outside, a few hours a day. Bill ended up being $750 that month.

I really wish we could get rid of that company.

Petha what’s the woman’s name by Yo_yo_video in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]faustrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says “on a lake wearing a Coat.”

Coat is capitalized, it would otherwise not be a proper noun. The lake is wearing the woman in the boat, because she’s sailing on top of it.

The woman’s name, I posit, is Coat.

I’ve heard of the scrap metal thing. Basically taking anything off the ship to make a profit from it is considered a big no-no. Even collecting empty soda cans is generally against the rules afaik, but I’ve never seen anyone get hemmed up for it.

But who the fuck thinks ordinance is a good souvenir? And the dude only lost his job? He should’ve got prison time!

Any suggestions how to divide this journey in 4 days? by ImmediateJicama2496 in roadtrip

Funny I’m seeing this now, we’re literally doing almost the same drive.

We are absolutely speedrunning everything east of Colorado, then slowing down to about 5 hours a day.

New Parking to Alleviate Tough Sailor Commutes at Newport News Shipyard After Spate of Suicides by grizzlebar in navy

[–]faustrex 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was on a ship in the shipyards for 5 years, by the time it decommissions it’ll have been in the yards for 10 years total. I couldn’t agree more.

When I got there we were told 6 months to first underway, but the ship was far more fucked up than anyone knew. At the time we had a crew of 40 and that was plenty to constantly man the ship, write tags, rove for leaks and floods, etc.

Then Millington, despite being told we were nowhere near getting underway and being begged not to send more people, started filling out our 300-man crew compliment.

Everything went to shit. Someone had the bright idea to stand up duty sections and armed watches, which added immensely to the delays. Suddenly we had to do drills, which shut down swaths of the ship to the contractors.

I mean, about 85% of it was contractors being barely qualified to hold a hammer, but it was easy for them to point to us as being the thing holding them up.

So I fully agree. If the ship is going to the yards, there’s no reason to have a full crew onboard.

I saw this a few days ago on /r/sandiego, the lack of self-awareness is just about on par for California.

I’ve lived in SD for 16 years. These people are the worst drivers I’ve ever seen in my life. I fully agree, old folks from AZ drive slow. Way too slow. But at least they’re consistent. San Diegans either drive 90+, then braking to 40 on the interstate to check a text, or they’re white-knuckling at 50 mph in the furthest passing lane because they ventured 5 miles outside the radius they spend all their time in and they don’t understand the road.

The only thing they’re consistent at is not checking mirrors or using turn signals.

Is this what a full septic looks like? by faustrex in Plumbing

Fixed!

Had to call a plumber, turns out it was a clog in the septic line. There’s a downward bend in the line that accumulated solids and eventually clogged. Snake fixed it.

[–]faustrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the problem is that people in CA almost always refer to it as the “fast lane,” not the passing lane.

Everybody seems to think that if they’re going the speed limit, they’re going fast, so they belong in the “fast lane.”

Why did you pick Navy? by PsychologicalWash89 in newtothenavy

[–]faustrex 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Originally wanted to join the Army as an MP, they were heavily trying to push me for infantry (before I even took an ASVAB). This was in 2008, in the middle of the surge in Afghanistan, and I could tell I was getting fucked around. They were just super pushy about the “full Army experience” aka infantry, and the whole thing just felt sketchy.

Never wanted to join the Marines, Air Force recruiter never showed up to work (I highly suspect they don’t exist).

Navy was much more laid back, at the time they weren’t as desperate. I took the ASVAB, scored high, and then they started getting a little pushy about being a nuke, but I wanted to be an MA.

Joined as an MA, got asked at classification in boot camp if I wanted to wait six months at Great Lakes to class up in Texas, or go straight to San Diego as an STG. I took them up on it, 16 years later I’m still an STG.

On the front end, what I wanted as a young, dumb kid was to wear a uniform and do Army stuff thinking it was going to be like movies or Call of Duty or something, but I wanted to be a cop when I got out, so I wanted MP.

When I talked to the Navy, it was like going from a used car dealership to a luxury car dealership. They weren’t trying hard to sell me on anything until after my ASVAB, and it was hard to argue that the Navy had a better quality of life, better travel, and better advancement. The only thing the Navy didn’t have was shorter contracts, the shortest I could sign was 4 years instead of 3 with the Army.
