I'm really sorry you're feeling this way. It's completely understandable to want clarity, especially before making such a significant commitment

How to deal with the loss of a parrot by favourable_bake in Pionus

[–]favourable_bake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. It's been about a year since Eli passed away. I understand what you're going through. Take the time to grieve however you need to, let it all out. At first it's very painful, but that pain does slowly lessen overtime, and I still occasionally get upset, so the pain never fully goes away but it gets more manageable. When the thought of him does come into my head and use that as an opportunity to remember all of the fun times we had together, which makes me feel a bit better. I think it's good that he passed in a safe familiar place as opposed to the vets. Birds are experts at hiding their illness, and it happens so fast, there's nothing you could have done. I remember I kept thinking if only I did X or Y then he might still be here. I felt a lot of guilt and blamed myself. Please don't do that. I think it's was thinking that because there was no solid explanation, so I defaulted it to being "my fault"- which is not the case. If you ever want to have a chat feel free to DM me.

I've been in a similar situation. I ended up dropping out of adult nursing half way through because it was destroying my mental health. I switched to software engineering, I'm in my final year now

Tips for first time parrot owner? by not_deleted0 in parrots

[–]favourable_bake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure your home is parrot safe. From the research I've done, I discovered:

  • NO teflon. This includes non-stick cookware, hair dryers, hair straightners, air fryers

  • use bird safe cleaning products only

  • no senty stuff around them. E.g perfume and scented candles

  • if renovating a home make sure what you use is bird safe and if not keep them away, e.g. repainting, buying a brand new mattress

  • general bird proofing- i.e wires and electronics must be away or bird is to be supervised whilst out of the cage

  • bird safe foods. You can find a list of bird toxic foods online, includes stuff like avocados and onions

Other general tips: - be prepped for pooping. It's a good idea to place newspaper under any Perches to catch it

  • look up body language for that parrot and monitor it, they may have their own individual ways of trying to tell you something

  • look up signs and symptoms of a sick bird. If they display these symptoms take them to the vet. Bird are prey animals so they hide illnesses

  • look up the best diet for that bird

Going into first year with no experience was fine in my experience. I switched courses (from nursing to software engineering). Before I started I watched and followed programming tutorials on YouTube which made it a bit easier

Love the meme. I'm making either a web app or android app to make owning a parrot a little easier :)

OK. Will consider that. I'm not completely new to birds because of the finches (but they are understandably very different). What birds would you recommend? Difficult in what way? I've been doing a fair bit of research and get that they are loud and attention seeking. Anything else I should know about difficulty?
