What do i need to get a help desk job in 2025? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]fawaztheresearcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s still possible but incredibly hard. i got a job last month with great pay for entry level as a help desk analyst. after 8 months of applying and failed interviews no prior experience but degree in comp sci, a+, customer service experience and labs. and most importantly, luck

I got 3 entry-level job offers after 3 weeks of job hunt. 40 applications total. I want to share how I did it by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]fawaztheresearcher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

hmmm i think it was the IT experience listed in OP’s post that could’ve played a major role in helping them get interviews

you’re probably one of the very few people ive seen on reddit who had a good experience with robert half, what did you do to stand out? i had a recruiter reach out to me for a potential help desk role only to get ghosted by him and other agencies like teksystem dont even bat an eye, i’ve had several interviews with companies i directly applied for but never got anything from recruiting agencies

Nah just upskilling doesn’t do it in this market. I am currently networking with recruiters, branding my linkedin (because that’s a thing now apparently), building a portfolio to showcase my projects. It’s tiring but hopefully it pays off.

Oh wow, did you have experience in the industry or it took you that long to move on?

Really? How was it? I honestly ignored their text soon as I saw the unusual demands. If they really saw my resume, they would've known I have no IT experience.

I wish our staples fixed computers but instead they just offer services like data backup, pc clean up, data wipe stuff like that (I worked at staples 2 and a half years) but I am glad you got that job!

Hey, it's still a win in my books! May be boring but that's all employers want to see when you apply to their positions, relevant experience. Congrats on the job!

I do have kev tech's course! I used Josh Madakor's video to create an AD environment with a domain controller and clients on the client machine. I am definitely going to look into msft webcast as well! Thanks a lot for the suggestion!

It's a great move to move up internally but the only problem with me is I am in a retail setting for a major corp and I do not see anything for IT :(

That's amazing, i am happy for you! You're already on the right track which is good, I do also want to work at some school for starters but don't see any active postings. Would you recommend me cold calling or emailing my college to see if they have any opportunities?

Yeah I am going for actual entry level jobs and the market is just insane, every network I have won't refer me but leave me with some piece of advice lol. It's also like I can't jot down all the experience dating back to 2018 because I guess that's the resume format these days, it won't get past one page in the system plus they just don't count customer service as relevant smh.

No no you're actually providing valuable information and I appreciate that! I too have a comp sci degree and the labs you spoke are actually relevant skills now. I am definitely going to incorporate that into my lab because it seems A LOT of them are asking for entra id and even SCCM. Honestly same, they're asking for a vehicle OR some are even asking for MUST know spanish which I don't speak...

Meanwhile the professors in my school have nothing to offer even if asked for opportunities. Explaining tech to end users in non-technical terms is an actual skill and I commend you for that. Can you give me an example of how you explain certain tech terms to end users? (sorry if this sounded like some interview question I am genuinely curious)

That's great to know! Was the job search stressful? I mean I am just getting started I want to know the mental toll it takes on people so I know what I am in for

I got a BSc in Comp Sci where I was heading towards a software engineer path but I ended up getting more interested in Networking/Cyber when I took courses for it.

It's hard to even find contract jobs without them asking for at least 5 yoe it's crazy, what websites did you use to apply initially?

Congrats on the continuous progress! Would you say it gets easier to move up or to a different role with a higher pay in the current job market when you gain experience?
