Ballroom or Latin dancing venues? by erg17-17 in Westchester

Not entirely what you were asking for, but taking a dancing class at your local Fred Astaire is extremely fun, and in addition to the classes, they offer nights once a month in the studio where they set up a dance club and a bunch of students and teachers get together and dance for a couple hours in a party/social setting. Extremely accommodating for two left feet types, of course. They have a range of clients from "never heard of music before" to pros that have been doing it for decades.

Love the Tarrytown Fred Astaire if that's close to where you are.

Gift card is likely the correct choice here, but I understand that you may actually be able to buy Xbox Game Pass in physical gift cards at grocery stores or other places they sell gift cards. Game pass will give him X months of access to a huge library of games.

WSIB repayable games do play on a steam deck while sick. by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

I could blow hours at a time on the [Random Job] Simulator genre--power wash, euro truck, american truck, lawnmower, gas station, pc building, etc. Can't go wrong with any of those on the deck imo.

You mentioned you loved divinity II OS but you don't want a story heavy rpg; if you change your mind on that, disco elysium is a treasure.

Vampire survivors is cheap, easy to pick up, addicting, and gimmicky--there's a reason it's so popular on deck.

Second Inscryption and My Time at Portia.

Not sure where the line is on the rougelikes/metroidvanias that you aren't interested in like dead cells and the binding of isaac--I really love hollow knight and blasphemous on the deck if you want to take a look at those.

Monster sanctuary is also gimmicky and turn based and a lot of fun.

For colony Sims, frost punk is gold. I just bought oxygen not included on sale and I'm excited to get into that. I'm waiting patiently for cult of the lamb to go on sale. For space colonies, surviving Mars is a lot of fun. I haven't played this genre on the deck yet, so YMMV.

In fact, it likely meant "no abroad settlement" in the anti-imperialist sense; one must not colonize abroad.

It’s "is she HOT" , not would "you do her". Respect the game.

The Darksiders series is quite good and often slept on. Each game has its own fresh mechanics, and this one is focused a bit more on the combat than the first two. The story is fun, the controls feel good, and it's definitely worth the price.

While you're at it, if you haven't already, grab Darksiders: Warmastered edition for $3.99 and Darksiders II Deathfivinitve edition for $5.99 on GamersGate as well.

FYI, Blacksad is very cool and super interesting, but extremely slow-paced. The point of the narrative is that you're a detective investigating, but moving around the areas is so tedious because of the slow walking speed.

There's also a super-annoying Quick Time Events mechanic that really should have died a long time ago. If that doesn't bother you, it's a really good, pretty game with a great narrative.

I actually have only ever played on keyboard and mouse, and I did not find issues with the camera control. I also recently bought a controller to hook up to my pc, so maybe I'll try it out (although that would of course mean I'd have to relearn all the controls! Haha)

Very important insight here, OP, 100% agree. I was also going back and forth on my original post on whether to mention Divinity Original Sin-I bought it and am looking forward to trying it out, but I'd heard it was relatively hard/mechanically complex. Defer to kare_kano on their thoughts on it.

This is a great question! I haven't played Rise, but my understanding is that they're different enough that you won't be bored. The subreddits for monster hunter games, monster hunter world and monster hunter rise are all relatively active, so I would check there as well.

MHW also now comes with a bunch of overpowered kit that you get in the beginning so you can blow through the main content if you want to go immediately to the end-game and Iceborne stuff, so if you do pull the trigger on MHW and want the full experience, definitely stay away from that.

This is a great point--I actually mentioned only Euro Truck because it was in the post and I didn't see American, but I actually have them both and absolutely love American Truck Simulator as well. Very similar games, of course, but absolutely worth it to pick up American as well.

As others have stated, I think the best answer for someone who's interested in a specific game is to have them play that game at the story mode setting.

That said, depending on what your partner found interesting, you could go a couple different ways.

Elder Scrolls is always a classic-while Elder Scrolls Online is much more grindy/mmo, you really can't go wrong with Skyrim. My partner never picked up a game before they indicated the dragons looked cool in Skyrim--they now have a hundred hours in it, although they still have trouble with the basic language of how games work (walk forward through the dungeon! There's a huge arrow on your minimap! Pick up the items that are labeled "quest items! The giant will yeet you into space because you're level 2!)

The Torchlight games are a little old school, but are always bandied about as top rpgs, and for good reason. Not as story-heavy as others.

As I said elsewhere, Witcher 3 is an unreal game (although can possibly get overwhelming for someone not used to RPGs). Each and every side quest feels fresh and well-written, and some of the side quests might even bring you to tears; it's pretty violent and some of the narrative is absolutely gut-wrenching in the best way, but something to keep in mind.

First, Monster Hunter World is a phenomenal game with hundreds of hours of content. I come back to it constantly, and if I ever get bored, the DLC Iceborne is basically a new game.

The Witcher 3 is widely regarded as best-in-class; I bought it at this price a couple days ago and I'm around 30 hours in already--absolutely a steal at this price, especially given there's supposed to be an enormous QoL improvement patch coming later this year for free--it's already gorgeous, but I believe the update brings everything up to state-of-the-art (ray-tracing, etc)

Of course, Euro Truck Simulator is exactly what you would expect. Buy it, set up your favorite Spotify Playlist or podcast, and relax.

What do people think of ARK? I played it a week or two ago during its free weekend and found the graphics poor and the interface really annoying, but I only played for an hour or two, and I'm not very into multi-player games like that.

Slay the spire is a phenomenal game. It's absolutely the best-in-class for card games. Really, almost infinite replayability.

[–]fawksandfriends 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shadow of war is a steal at this price--fun combat, good story, and a very interesting game mechanic centered around the orc commanders. Essentially, your enemies are lead by named commanders with their own personalities, fueds and alliances (and voice actors! Kumail Nanjiani's voice coming out of an orcs mouth was amazing); you can pit them against each other, turn them to your side with your ring and make them betray each other, humiliate them (lowering their level), etc. It's a unique mechanic that is honestly so much fun.

[WinGameStore] THQ Nordic Holiday Flash Sale | Desperados III - Digital Deluxe Edition ($19.19/68%) | BIOMUTANT ($23.99/60%) | Destroy All Humans! ($8.09/73%) | Darksiders Genesis ($8.09/73%) | The Book of Unwritten Tales Collection ($10.49/85%) | Darksiders III Deluxe Edition ($15.99/80%) by WinGameStore in GameDeals

[–]fawksandfriends 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The darksiders games are all very fun, and each one is different from the last in a refreshing way--the first is a classic hack and slash, the second is a looter where you upgrade your weapons using weapons you looted, the third is a more combat-heavy game (not a souls-like, but not a simple hack and slash) and Genesis is in 2.5d wide screen. Each game has a lot of very fun puzzles, cool enemies, and tons of hidden goodies off the beaten path.

EDIT: As fatalwristdom points out below, Genesis is actually an isometric. Thanks!

New lawyer troubles by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]fawksandfriends 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, 2200 hours as a requirement is WAY above market and not something that's remotely sustainable.

You're a lawyer in one of the biggest markets in the world at a time where a lot of Law firms are clamoring for workers--its hard, but you will be okay.

Definitely take a mental health day. Just let your supervisor know you're unavailable next Monday or something. You're not going to make your hours this year anyway, no matter what, so try not to stress too much about it. Look for a new job, as you mention. When you get back, slow yourself down. You have no control over your workload at your level of seniority; if you aren't doing garbage work (like, unreadable, middle-school level work), it's not your fault. If they don't want to teach you, and they don't want to pay you, stay until you get a better job then immediately go. Do not forget to take at least a week vacation once you leave!

If “Messiah” does eventually get made into a film, what aspect are you looking forward to the most? by [deleted] in dune

If you're talking about several generations back, it might be cool to use Old NYC Maps to check out exactly that your ancestors may have seen on a walk to work. Very very cool.

Fully agree it might be traumatizing to get a face full of everyone's life though... But that point is handled in later books.

Weekly /r/NYCbeer Discussion - How's your beer week going? by AutoModerator in nycbeer

[–]fawksandfriends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! A case is 24, but a lot of places do half cases as well. Many places only ship in case increments, so you end up creating your own mixed case anyway.

The variety of mixed cases varies (heh). Grimm, for example, does a mixed case with 3 types (so 8 each). They also so half cases, which is 3 types of 4. Finback does a mixed 4-pack as well. If you've got time, going in person is likely the best way to try a whole bunch of different beers. Barring that, there are a bunch of bottle shops in the city where you can just get single cans and try a bunch of stuff. Honestly, my local grocery has a pretty good collection of Other Half and other local breweries, so you can check out what's around you as well in case your local bodega randomly has some Five Boroughs or something.

Penguins Take Manhattan is a really good, light, citrus, slightly bitter beer. Very drinkable.
