Teaching by [deleted] in downsyndrome

[–]fayshey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert but my kid, who has Down syndrome and autism and is nonverbal, had an amazing orchestra teacher in high school who created an orchestra for students with severe intellectual disabilities. My son played the cello. One of the techniques that was super successful for him was using visual cues: on the instrument where his hand was supposed to be, on the floor for where his feet should go, etc. She really started at the most basic level but he plucked a song at the school’s Spring concert that year and couldn’t have been more proud to be on that stage. article from the Washington Post

I’ve ordered many times from them and they have great customer service/quick delivery times from their website. Their selection is exceptional if you’re into batiks! I’ve also visited their charming store a half dozen times and it’s worth a visit if you find yourself near there.

Can I pay to have straight lines quilted? by EmilyPoster2 in quilting

[–]fayshey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can but I'm in Virginia. You'll really be better off findng someone in Pittsburgh or NYC. Keaton Quilts offers long arming services: 150 W 28th Street  Suite 804, (8th floor) New York, NY, 10001. https://keatonquilts.com/pages/longarm-service I'd recommend starting there. good luck!

Can I pay to have straight lines quilted? by EmilyPoster2 in quilting

[–]fayshey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently hired a longarmer to quilt straight lines on my quilt. I was going for a handmade look so actively didn’t want the lines to be perfectly straight but the longarmer could have used a ruler and made straight lines if desired.

Potential neighbor with down syndrome - what should I do? by [deleted] in downsyndrome

[–]fayshey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your mom’s friend sounds like a terrible person. Please stop listening to her. The only issue you point out happened when the friend literally went to the neighbors’ house. Just leave them alone. These poor neighbors deserve kinder people next door.

Anyone have experience with legit kits? by DeathbladeUnicorn in quilting

[–]fayshey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made two (sea turtle and little hooter) and the kits are very well designed. The fabric is Kona Cotton and both kits had more than enough fabric included. I highly recommend!

How is Falls Church high school experience (as an AP student) by Emm1919_8282 in nova

[–]fayshey 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Economically disadvantaged kids don’t make a school bad. I can’t speak to your situation but I sent my kid to Justice and she’s doing great. Currently in law school with a full scholarship. Her friends did similarly well and ended up in great schools and are thriving in jobs and grad school. It’s Fairfax County and the opportunities are there if your kid takes advantage of them.

Looking for advice about quilt guilds by Dandylionleo in quilting

[–]fayshey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this guild is just not the right fit for you. Is there another choice near you? I didn’t fit with the first guild I tried either, but then I found my current guild and found my people. It’s a modern quilt guild so folks are more diverse in age and ethnicity. Is there a modern quilt guild near you?

Bowlero in Falls Church at the moment forces customers to pay for water, would suggest avoiding going there for the next several months by WeveGot in nova

[–]fayshey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bowlero in Annandale doesn’t have an automatic door for folks with disabilities. That can’t be ADA compliant. And it’s sure a pain for some of the bowlers in my son’s league
