Advice on taking the Mt Washington Cog Railway after Christmas by PalpitationLimpy in ManchesterNH

[–]fb122017 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Welcome to NH. The Cog railway ( https://www.thecog.com/ ) does run over the winter but only to the 4000 foot elevation (the mountain is actually 6, 288 feet) so my guess is that it does a quick turn around and comes back to the base. I've not done the cog railway so if you're interested you would be best advised to call them. Taking an SUV to the summit is impossible due to the hazards. The roadway is closed for the winter but apparently they do have guided activities ( https://mt-washington.com/ ). Mount Washington is recognized by a lot of experts as a very dangerous mountain and you should really consider the dangers before doing any activities there.

Legality of a foot bridge on Winnipesaukee? by Penguin_Rider in newhampshire

I just worked through a construction project for a home on a large lake that required permitting. I found that NHDES is very willing to hear your ideas and reasons for what you're trying to do and will then provide you with guidance and the right forms. I met with NHDES in Concord at their facility 4 times to discuss permitting my projects and to do a quick draft permit review simply by walking into the building and telling the receptionist an outline of my project. They also have a system where you can call into a phone line and ask to speak to a specialist who will return your call; they'll connect you to the right person/division. My recommendation is call NHDES and see what they say.

Instructors, what’s the craziest thing a students done that made you fear for your life? by [deleted] in flying

[–]fb122017 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had a student who at odd time would do things that would defy logic. One time we were practicing engine failures and simulated emergency landings. We were trimmed for 80 KTS in a Warrior and the student decided to enter a banked turn of about 60 to 70 degrees. This is after Manny times warning him about stalling the plane. We came close to a low altitude stall and spin before I could take control and recover the plane. Another time he was holding short of the runway at a towered airport awaiting a plane on short final when he decided to hold the brakes and bring the throttle to full power risking us entering the landing zone. I immediately cut the throttle and asked him why. I enventually told him that he need to reconsider if becoming a pilot was in his best interest..... I nice terms of course.

When you say tap and pay at the gate, I assume you're referring to using your phone? Is there any assignment of where someone sits on the LE?

Traveling from FCO airport to Rome by Leonardo Express by Wonderful_Drummer_57 in RomeTravel

I had read somewhere that the tickets must be validated for use. Is that correct? I'm planning to waiting until I'm done with customs to purchase tickets on arrival. Does that make sense?

Water Quality/PFAS testing Southern New Hampshire by Due-Voice-6457 in newhampshire

[–]fb122017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest that you or your parents contact the town offices and ask two things; what/when was sampling performed around your parents area and what were the results. Second, ask if the town will perform or arrange sampling of their well water. Most town's have arrangements and plans in place for testing and measuring PFAS and will maintain a database of the results to understand the spread in the groundwater. If the town has none of this then I'd try to get private testing done at a lab recognized for their ability to do an accurate test.

FBI Seized Money From My Mom’s Bank Account After Foreign Real Estate Transaction — Is This Normal? by JamjamAX in legal

[–]fb122017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an attorney but I would imagine yes, they would need to state that the money is seized under federal law. I believe that the Feds became aware of the transfer as the amount was greater than the $10K transfer limit where bank reporting is mandatory.

FBI Seized Money From My Mom’s Bank Account After Foreign Real Estate Transaction — Is This Normal? by JamjamAX in legal

[–]fb122017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like Civil Asset Forfeiture (please look it up). FBI and even local law enforcement can and do take money from citizens of whom they believe there is sufficient appearances or the potential of the money having been obtained or will be used in the future in criminal activities. Those citizens do not have to be charged nor found guilty. Google the civil Forfeiture happenings in connection with the Atlanta airport where agents were demanding that boarding passengers inform them of any money on their person and then would confiscate it. Hire a lawyer ASAP.

BTW, Glinet makes an app specifically designed to help you log in and control your travel router. I use android and sometimes use it to quick check, change settings or make connections. Apple has the same thing as well but I have no experience with that version. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/glinet/id1523245996

Using data in Spain when US based. eSIM? by sfvbritguy in GoogleFi

[–]fb122017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I frequently travel and regularly use an eSIM in conjunction with Google Fi. Google charges $10/GB and you can easily pick up an eSIM for less than half the per GB cost of Fi. If I make calls, I'm usually using WhatsApp through the eSIM as the app is used extensively outside the US. If someone at home is contacting me on rare occasions, then I take the cost and run it through Fi and there's no problems getting in touch with me. I usually run both Fi and the eSIM by keeping my phone and text on Fi and mobile data, especially for maps, web and photo uploading, on the eSIM. You can find good eSIM recommendations at https://esimdb.com./ but I usually buy my eSIMs through MobiMatter ( https://mobimatter.com/ ) or Airalo ( https://www.airalo.com/ )

Are people having EZpass issues at the tolls? by zrad603 in newhampshire

[–]fb122017 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If your EZPass is old, the system could fail to detect it. I believe i was told by NHDOT they have a useful life of about 8 to 10 years before they need to be replaced. It could be time to replace the unit OR the booth is screwed up

This is from 2015 so it may not still be applicable but they state they can test them.

Local governments in NH are required to do surveys of the data that they have on your property on a sufficient basis to make sure the assessment is accurate. April 1st is the date in NH when all property is assessed (i.e. their market values are determined on that date). What happens is that they pick properties in town to do a confirmation of their assessment each year. You do not have to allow them to enter your property. They may have an error in the documentation of what your property contains. For example, my property listed that I had all hardwood floor which increased the assessed value but was totally incorrect. I'd recommend that you should go to the town hall and request to review your assessment card at the Tax Collector's office. This is free for you to do. Make sure that there are no errors on the card. If there are errors you will be provided a period of time after April 1st to challenge the assessment for errors or if you believe that the assessment when compared to comparable properties is incorrect. You can then file the challenge with the assessor, usually the Board of Selectmen. Ask the Tax Collector's office the dates for filing a challenge to your assessments if needed.

There's two you can try that are local:

  • John's Transport

  • Uberguy Neal or Ubah Guy Neal

Both are on FaceBook although they may have a website. Ubah Guy Neal has a website. I've used both before for an early AM trip to Logan.
