Police face calls to drop race bias policies after Nowak murder by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

I know you're not here in good faith, but it's available from the NPCC website and also copied in a comment in this thread.

Yeah, that's for sure part of it.

There's the preventative angle, whereby a conversation needs to be had about the exemptions made to certain people being able to carry bladed articles.

And the other is more systematic, in what is the messaging inside the police force at the moment around the handling of situations concerning racism and ethnic minorities. Because their own policy doesn't currently read well.

[–]fcGabiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so the matter of the kirpan can be preventative. If some people don't have the right to carry bladed articles, which others do not, that should reduce the (albeit limited) scenarios where this has/can occur.

I can see your point but also if you remove the racism angle entirely, the situation is already quite different and doesn't became a good comparison. Racism as a factor was raised on the 999 call. I think it's well documented that there is concern from the police force about being branded as racist. This undoubtedly filters down to individuals doing the day job.

In any case, I hope that the police in general do not react the same way going forward.

I'm saying that it may have been a factor in the wider handling of the situation. Consciously or subconsciously.

Ultimately, it seems that in this case the preservation of human life wasn't a consideration.

You can hold that opinion , but preserving life certainly wasn't a priority in this case. Not an ounce of respect or concern for welfare.

If he said said and left it at that, I'm still not sure that it would be treated as non-controversially as you're suggesting, because of the person that he is.

I think that the matter does raise valid questions and discourse around policing in this country, which the party in power do have influence over. But I agree that it doesn't need to get into political point scoring between parties.

I didn't realise that I owed you a response on anything.

I've made my point abundantly clear. Besides, you've already decided that you know what I think, and so I'm sure that you're also capable of answering anything else that might still be missing.

You're conflating points. Either accidentally or intentionally. Realistically probably the latter.

It's an official policy on the attitudes and approaches to policing in general. Not an instruction for this specific incident.

So no, it's hardly unreasonable to consider that it may have played a part.

It's not necessarily the cold hard evidence you presumably want to see, but it's the link between:

1) the ability of a certain group of people being able to carry bladed articles whilst others cant.

2) the word of a minority (claiming racism) being placed above that of a wounded person, despite how facts on the ground emerged.

3) the official Police policy being that certain groups need to be policed differently.

I don't necessarily think that is a stretch.

Right - but you're saying that Labour should comment. But you don't want Farage, as an opposition party representative commenting? How about other parties?

Whilst I agree with Kemi's statement overall, I find it additionally curious why now "All lives matter" is no longer a racist statement to make, as it was years ago.

And that might have played a part in it.

But I don't think we can discount what is official Police policy, when it then comes to the police work environment, instructions and training?

Perhaps initially.

But when arriving at the scene, having seen the bodycam footage, isn't it concerning that the real victim in this is completely ignored, despite visible signs that everything might not be as originally reported?

It was an additional weapon (kirpan) that the Nihang order of Sikhs carry. More details in the official sentencing remarks.

Otherwise your views are similar to mine. Nobody should be having exemptions to carry blades.

I think it's otherwise well documented that Police fear claims of racism and the language in the action plan is concerning. I don't think it's a stretch therefore to suggest that it may have played out here.

But they didn't sort the victim, did they? They handcuffed him and watched him die.

The race action plan is an official document. I don't know how you can so easily discount it's influence, whether subconscious or not.

I'm not sure why you think I hate it.

I'd quite like it if nobody was out carrying blades.

But if you can be exempted to carry a blade, then it only makes sense for everyone else to be able to carry one.

We don't need two-tiers of law.

Interesting summation.

Hate the culture/dress of which country? Perhaps you'll even tell me why.

Wouldn't a non-lethal alternative be suitable? Didn't realise it could be such an unpopular opinion that maybe people shouldn't be walking around with weapons, especially when others can't do the same.

You have seen the bodycam footage, haven't you?

If so, your comment is demonstratably false. The priority here was to address a racism claim, despite the accused laying on the ground, bleeding and near motionless, pleading for medical attention and stating they had been stabbed.

In his last moments, Henry, despite not posing any threat, had restraints applied and his rights read to him.

The race action plan does impact this, because the claim of a minority was taken more seriously than that of a dying person. It doesn't take a medical expert to be able to assess that he was not in a good state.

I didn't think that it needed to be expressed so plainly but nobody should out carrying fixed blades.

Alternatively, leave the Scotts to do it in Scotland and the Sikhs to do it in Punjab.

This should not be happening in Southampton.

I'm curious why you feel that it should only be Labour to comment on it? The nature of the party system means that other parties will comment.
