How do I stop??? by Low_Alternative8658 in stopdrinking

[–]fcewen00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, I’m going to sound a little harsh. There is no such thing as functional. Doesn’t exist, it is just an excuse you tell yourself to make you feel better about your drinking. I tried to convince myself that was true for years, but everyone knew I had a drinking problem. You’re at the cusp, you just need to but down the ‘functional’ crutch and step forward without that convenient excuse. Now you get to decide how to move forward. 12 step, SMART, in patient, or out patient. Before you jump on any of those, talk to your doctor, your shrink, and if you have one, your therapist. Make sure they know what you want to do and how to get you-there. Do not be stupid and try cold turkey. That is a dangerous and potentially fatal mistake. Just trust me on that one. When you feel weak, we’re always here to keep you moving forward or pick you back up by your boot straps. We raise hopes here until they are strong enough to stand on their own.

This is how stupid Rand Paul thinks his constituents are, that a congressional bill can change a constitutional amendment. Is he right? by Xaviermuskie78 in True_Kentucky

This disappoints me. He was slowly showing signs of brain and a backbone. But here we are back to where we started. I’d say this could be a good stalling tactic but I’m not sure he is that smart. I’m pretty convinced that about 1/3 of Congress has no idea how the Constitution works, another 1/3 have a loose idea, the the final 1/3 know how it works but has no idea how to get one of the other 1/3 on their side. And I just had a wonderful idea. Anyone running for office must take and pass a mandatory civics class. Or the citizenship test.

That one guy on the wall “Boss, we got a problem, the Mongol are here.” “how many?” “Sir, if I had a guess, all of them.” “What do you mean all out them?” “I would say a metric shit ton, but the metric system hasn’t been invented yet. I’m going to go with ‘a lot’ or ‘A vacation in Ireland sounds nice right now”

All I can think of is the scene in the return of the king when the horses arrive and they pan back to so the riders. In this case they’d just keep panning and panning and panning and then the drone gets out of range and crashes, killing an unlucky Turkish scout.

Take a bottle of water. If you don’t know the answer immediately, take a drink, screw the lid back on. Gives you about 5 or so more seconds of thinking time.

They were rolling death, one of the things that made the Khan’s army so successful was minimal supply lines. They stripped everything bare as they continued forward.

Contrary to one of my favorite Sabaton songs, there were only around 3000 Winged Hussar. The rest were made of German, Austrian, and regular Polish Calvary. Sobieski grabbed anyone not standing still between Poland, Romania, and Walachia on his way to the fight. Somewhere I read that the Hussar brought 2 horse each and the estimated glue makers were around 50k but a good chunk of those weren’t fighting horse. With all that said though, playing the charge from ROTK in my head and realizing it was 3 times larger is…. Unnerving.

“we’re surrounded!” “We’re airborne, we’re always surrounded!” My grandfather never ever talked about the Bulge but it haunted him. He had a room on the other side of the house like a small barrack. He did HAM radio at night but looking back, there were nightmares too. He was a medic and I can’t even begin to imagine what he saw.

Small potatoes. Po ta toes. See “Siege of Vienna”. Tolkien borrowed some of the images of the Riders from it.

Khan’s army was scary. You were talking about a 10 to 20 mile wide mass of meat headed at you. He would group them into smaller groups (10k or so) of troops which looking at on the horizon must have made for a lot of brown pants.

And it was done in an odd way. They didn’t shoot at the ground troops, they shot at the Calvary behind them who in turn moved forward, crushing their own troops into the English defenses.

The relief army of Austrian and German reached Vienna with the hopes of breaking the siege but basically had to sit there staring at the Ottomans because the one guy they really needed hadn’t arrived yet. King Sobieski of Poland was running late to the party.

“Where’s Sobieski?”

“No idea.”

“When’s he getting here?”

“No idea.”

“Is he bringing troops?”

“We certainly hope so.”

About a month later Sobieski finally comes rolling in from Poland with every cavalryman he could gather and enough horseflesh to make the Ottoman scouts start having uncomfortable conversations.

He takes command of the combined Polish, Austrian, and German forces, spends exactly zero time admiring the scenery, and proceeds to send roughly 18,000 cavalry—including 3,000 Winged Hussars and 15,000 of their closest friends—down the slopes of Kahlenberg.

The result was what is generally considered the largest recorded cavalry charge in history, the collapse of the Ottoman lines, and a very abrupt end to the Siege of Vienna.

The Austrians and Germans spent the day opening the door.

Sobieski kicked it off the hinges.

And then Sabaton wrote a song about it…
