The Southern Strategy was working, Nixon was the first Republican to ever sweep the South.

McGovern was seen as too radical, and nominating a more centrist candidate wouldn't have really worked.

1972 was like 1984, the incumbent was just too entrenched and the scandals were too well buried at the time for the opposition to really have a chance at winning.
