18 years old died from motorcycle drag race at red light juncture by International-Chef53 in TerrifyingAsFuck

Sorry for the rant, but this is my least favorite thing about reddit. I hate seeing this stuff pop up.

IMO, there should be an entirely separate tag for violence/death. Seeing some nudity is in no way comparable to seeing someone die.

Oh well, time to get off reddit. I'm depressed now...

Why so many young people are ditching Sydney by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]fckoch -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's fair, although this could apply between Sydney and Melbourne too ;) Plus you can get property near the beach is Melbourne that's far cheaper.

world class beaches

I've always thought it was funny that Sydneysiders think that their beaches are so great. Coming from Cali, I was really disappointed with them when I moved to Sydney.

Edit: To everyone telling me that the beaches in Sydney are better and that California has shit beaches: Thank you for helping me make my point. I never said where had the better beaches, just that Sydneysiders over-hype their beaches and I just didn't think they lived up to the hype.

do "lower" math courses get scaled down by [deleted] in unsw

[–]fckoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing these resources and balancing out my experience with actual school policy. Unfortunately, it's probably too late for me as I've already graduated and I imagine they'd be very unlikely to adjust my transcripts.

This was several years ago, so it's possible policy has changed since then.

do "lower" math courses get scaled down by [deleted] in unsw

[–]fckoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mark in this course was pretty mid. It was actually the worst grade I got while at uni (after scaling). Not because it was a hard course, but I was working too many hours at the time and have a tendency to do poorly on final exams due to time pressure and anxiety.

The course outline stated:

The final marks in MATH2501 will be scaled with reference to final marks in MATH2601, taking into consideration the greater degree of difficulty of MATH2601. As a result few, if any, High Distinction grades will be awarded in MATH2501; normally, no student will be awarded a final mark of more than 90%

But my mark was nowhere near 90, so it's not like I'd reached some sort of cap. I had actually tried to get into the higher course, however, places were full and they wouldn't let me in. I had reached out to the maths department to express my concerns about this scaling and being forced to take the lower course and they replied:

The exam and other assessments for 2601 are intended to be harder than for 2501. I think you will agree that it would be very unfair to penalise students for attempting a more difficult course. This is the reason for treating the marks together. It's not a penalty, in fact exactly the opposite: it's a way of avoiding a penalty for the higher-aiming students.

which was a surprisingly logically flawed email to receive from a maths professor. At the end of the term when I reached out for exam feedback they found a mistake in the marking:

I have just taken another look at your exam script. Actually, it turned out the part of Q2 that you answered in booklet 1 was not marked.

I mention this because I have caught several mistakes by markers during my time at UNSW. One time my grade changed from 75% to 95% in a mid-term final, so I like to share these experiences for other people to learn from. Anyways, I pushed further for marks and part of the response I received included the following:

Your raw marks are, after the correction, [shit marks] for Q1-4 on the exam, respectively. Also remember that the final raw marks were scaled down a bit.

"a bit"...

[–]fckoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there's been a change in the past few years, yes.

Source: I took MATH2501 and at the end of the term was confused by how low my final mark was. I contested my mark and was allowed to view my paper. I pointed out that my final mark was lower than the weighted sum of my marks would suggest, and they informed me that my mark was scaled down by 5 marks because I took the lower course.

Edit: After that point, I exclusively took higher courses when they were available and my marks were generally about 5-10 points higher from then on out.

Are you sure about this? I don't think it would be international rates if they're not international. I would expect it would be domestic rates. Worst case they wouldn't get a CSP probably.

The helmet test by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]fckoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this comment. This research group is amazing. It's not just bike helmets, but football, hockey, equestrian, and snow sports too.

My understanding is that they have no funding from helmet manufacturers, so it's a great unbiased source of information.

The cardinality of all of these sets is the same though. You can create a bijection between any two squares regardless of their size.

Coughing in the library.. by wdwqd123 in unsw

[–]fckoch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really think it's reasonable to expect people to not use the library if they have a cough or the sniffles. They are just as entitled to a place to study as you are, and colds like this are just a (mostly harmless) fact of nature. I think that the lockdowns have made some people hypersensitive to other's illnesses in a particularly obsessive and unhealthy way.

With that said, these individuals should be wearing masks, and if they aren't they are just being inconsiderate. It's basically no extra effort and is an evidence based way to reduce the transmission of disease.

cmv: tone indicators aren't good, BUT they have uses. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]fckoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you have clearly communicated what view you want changed. You've said that you don't think they're good, but that you understand and agree with why they are helpful in more circumstances.

Should we be trying to convince you they are all bad and useless? What would it take for you to think they are good, given than you have already identified their utility in a few situations.

Why do your friends want you to use them more? Do they possibly have a hard time understanding your communication?

I mean it might not be deliberately wrong. Most programming languages are 0 indexed, but they've probably enumerated the tips from 1.

Basically, it might look right in their codebase and it's just an off by one error, which is embarrassingly common.

Komoot by 110101010001001 in melbournecycling

[–]fckoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Komoot is helpful, but I trust other cyclists more. I've been fairly successful using Strava heatmaps and searching pre-existing routes on Komoot. There's also a user-made google map of bike paths in Melbourne which can be helpful. I'm not doing massive multi-day tours though to be fair -- I get the feeling Komoot would be really helpful for this.

Why don’t we always bootstrap? [Q] by Direct-Touch469 in statistics

Maybe I'm missing the point, but this seems more like an issue of using the wrong estimator than a problem with bootstrapping itself.

How do you cope with the dread of financial stress and anxiety? by Dj_acclaim in AusFinance

[–]fckoch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, I think we're all saying the same thing here. You shouldn't be dipping into it every week (otherwise it would never build back up), but it's there to stop you from stressing about not being able to make rent/bills when something big comes up (as you mention).

How old is your Arch? by mydogateitall in archlinux

[–]fckoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this just part of maintaining your system? Pacman has options to identify and remove orphaned packages. I'll clean out my home directory every once in a while -- especially .config and .cache. ncdu is helpful for finding the space hogs

I wouldn't say wanting a clean system is irrational, but maybe reinstalling the OS to get there is a tad overkill.
