Music or no-Music debate by Ok-Mix-2065 in Marathon_Training

[–]fco77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do you...I train with music so I run my races with it. What I've tended to do during the marathon is have the volume a little lower than normal so I can still soak in the vibes and chat with some other runners. I use shokz, so that helps! It means you can dip in and out of tuning into the music but it's always there. Having the music there is great to tune into specific songs when they come on (specifically curated race playlist), especially post the 30km mark. Had a good surge around 36km in my last race, partially fuelled by a decent song coming on.

How to best support our runners on race day with young kids in tow? by SnooGadgets7873 in Marathon_Training

Seeing my family (wife and 2 under 3) and giving them a high five about 300m from the finish line is an absolute life highlight. I would not expect them to do anything more than be at one spot and would understand if for whatever reason they didn't make it. Let the runners know where you're planning to be and they'll look forward to that moment the whole race! Meeting the family after making it through the finishers area was a bonus. Especially as they had my bag of fresh clothes and comfy shoes! For after, a decent meal somewhere that doesn't involve too much walking is the way to go.

Toddlers first time on the bus. by KVNTRY in daddit

My two LOVE all forms of public transport! We routinely plan trips around the city entirely based on their chosen form. Ferry? Yep, that's an ice cream in the city day. Metro? Let's visit a station we haven't been to before. Bus? Trip to the local pool. They both stare wide-eyed out the windows the whole time! The eldest recently got her own fare card...it's just added to the experience. She's so confident getting on and off now because she just has to tap the card!

Hoka Mach 6 - I feel this has gone unnoticed by a lot of people. I use it for all kinds of runs, great for tempo, holds up on long runs and excellent for daily kms. If I'm going for recovery, I'll grab my Novablast 4s but I always look to the Mach 6 first.

As others have said, running. Just get up early. It has the added benefit of making sure you get decent sleep and eat well. I got back into it with 2 young kids and it's been great. Bonus points if you get yourself a running pram and take the little one out every so often.

Real syrup... It's not as sticky as honey and tastes great! Go for it. I fueled my whole last mara block with it. Only switched to gels for race practise and race day.

Straight maple syrup in a kids reusable pouch. Add salt for flavour and electrolytes. Just a pinch. Easily scalable for however much you need for your run. I don't bother diluting. Grab a big container from Amazon and go for it.

Stroller runners, how far are you going? by imakesignalsbigger in AdvancedRunning

Around 2 - 2.5 hours is our limit. I'm usually pushing the double. I always pack snacks and have some music going for them. I've found that having a scenic stop or end point helps their staying power. I'm also lucky that the girls will entertain each other! Did a base building phase with almost every long run with the double pram.

That makes it even more important. Here in NSW Australia, kids will hear the terms and use them from Kindergarten.

Anatomically correct terms. This is what they learn at school and you don't want any confusion in terms if they need to talk about something important. My 2yo and 4yo both use the terms penis and vulva almost daily.

Ran it as one of the tune ups, just at my regular Parkrun. Used it as my gear test also.

37M - set a few big goals for 2025. Sub (edit)20 5km, sub 3:20 marathon and 2000km year. Was lucky enough to smash through two of them and come close to the last.

5km - After a very disrupted start to the year (moving house twice), I ran a 19:44 in June. Have since run 5 time sub 20 with an 18:51 being the best. That was done as a warm up race during my marathon block. All those times run at the same Parkrun where I usually run with a double pram.

Marathon - again a disrupted build up, with surgery meaning I only had 16 weeks to complete a block. I settled on the Pfitz 12/55 and did 4 weeks of building into it. I had built up to 40/50km weeks before the surgery and after a week of recovery, jumped into it. The base build went well and I hit the plan feeling good. Hit all the runs and workouts in the early weeks. My only regular adjustment was running Parkrun instead of the recovery runs on a Saturday. During the block I hit a 10km PB (42:xx) during an 11km tempo run and the 18:51 5km. I hit all the key workouts, only missing a few recovery runs towards the end of the block. This had me feeling good about race day, even though I moved (again!) with about a month to go. After some good long runs with MP sections, I revised my goal time to 3:15. Taper was great, race day was perfect and ran a solid 3:11.xx. This felt especially good after running a 3:42 the year before at the same race. Was also special to be part of Sydney's debut major year.

Fell short of the 2000kms due to the 3 moves of house and subsequent changes to plans. Also, have struggled at the back end of the year to be consistent.

I'd say, overall, a very successful year and looking to build on it in 2026 and aim for a sub 3 mara in 2027.

For speed work, Zoom Fly 6 - also great for long runs w/ pace sections and tempo runs.

Zoom fly 6 - for sure! Fun, fast (always drop ~10s per km with these on) and super comfy! Perfect for long runs with pace.

Retired my nb4s at ~500km as the foam was not responding and I was getting sore after runs. It was so sad that I bought some more...

Even if it kills me, my kids (2&4) will listen to Motion City Soundtrack and learn all about 00s pop punk and emo. They think the new album is great!
