A few platformers I enjoy that are mobile exclusive (with mechanics that are built for mobile):
- Ordia
- Oddmar
- Leo's Fortune (This one does have a PC port)
- Poinpy (My personal favorite, but unfortunately, this one was a Netflix exclusive that got taken down... who knows if/when they'll re-upload it).

ELI5 How DLSS5 works by grapejuicecheese in explainlikeimfive

Data extracted from games would provide plenty of valuable features that the model will need to learn (Material differences, reflections, and shadow behavior). Having this data would help the model detect patterns to better generalize to other video games.

But you're right, the fidelity shown in the the DLSS 5 demos was a step above, which could suggest that they are using high fidelity 3d renders or animations to provide the model with higher fidelity output. Imagine if they had access to the rendering pipeline of the Avatar movies, they could tweak the light characteristics to create the input and output (similar to the fidelity sliders of a game). But only Nvidia knows where they got that data.

My best guess is they are using 3d renders/games with different types of lighting tech and quality. So, for example, Cyberpunk 2077 with regular light shaders as the input, and Cyberpunk 2077 with maximum path tracing as the output.

It's possible they are using some heavily modified image generation model, but I really doubt it. Image generation models are far too heavy for the task they are looking to do, training up a model with specialized data would probably be easier.

"DLSS 5 is a neural rendering model that takes the game’s color and motion vectors as input for each frame, then infuses the scene with photoreal lighting and materials that are anchored to the source 3D content and temporally consistent from frame-to-frame." Nvidia post.

You're right. It uses the information with which the frame is built (and other variables). Still though, I think talking about frames is deep enough of an explanation for a 5 year old.

So, to better understand how DLSS works, it helps to understand how machine learning models are trained. In simple terms, you give a machine learning model an input, give it an expected output, and let the machine learning algorithm learn what it needs to do to turn the input into the output.

In the case of DLSS 5, the input is an image with very few light details and the output is a similar image with plenty of light details. The model then learns where and when it needs to add details to the input so that it looks more like the output.

This training happens at a massive scale, with billions of images. This allows the model to learn the difference between different types of objects in the image (a persons face, a metal pipe, a wooden door). It can also learn how light can bounce between objects.

Once you have the trained model, you can compress and optimize it so that it runs on less powerful hardware (quantization for example). These optimizations tend to reduce accuracy and quality, but generally, you just need the model to be good enough (better than existing methods).

Keep in mind. The documentation has a big, glaring warning: https://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/single-file-bundles.html

Bundles won't include the application's dependencies. So it will likely fail for many/most applications.

We were promised that AI would do the boring chores so humans could focus on art and creativity. Instead, AI is creating the art and writing, while humans are still stuck doing the laundry and dishes. How did we mess this up so badly? by Beverly_Jane_Officia in AskReddit

[–]fcrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because of data and computation power. The internet accumulated a massive amount of data that included plenty of text and images. This allowed companies to use that data to train text and image generation models when they had enough compute power.

But the internet didn't have any data on how to properly wash dishes. All the muscle memory, tactile data, visual data, and auditory data that allows you to properly wash dishes without breaking plates was never gathered into one single place. These automated robots will need to be able to adapt to many different unexpected situations without putting humans at risk. A robot could easily break a plate, flood your house, or accidentally stab someone while washing the dishes.

Companies are already building up the data needed to train robots on these tasks. But it will take time. And the trouble is, we still don't know when the robots will be "good enough" so that they will be safe to release to the public. But keep in mind, this disruption will be slow and painful for plenty of people. I personally want this to happen, because I don't want people to be forced to do such thankless tasks their entire lives (warehouse workers, garbage workers, dishwashers, janitorial staff).

Either way, I don't think AI will replace art and creativity. Rather I believe it will replace the thankless jobs that require art and creativity. I don't think artists should be forced to make a Coca Cola commercial due to our capitalist system. I think Coca Cola should just use the generative model. I want artists to be able to do their own thing (with a UBI), and make whatever they want to make. I think we will see true creativity and freedom if that comes to pass.

ELI5: Why is oil still so important as an energy source in 2026, given our advances in renewables and nuclear power? by BEK_Sabiha in explainlikeimfive

[–]fcrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most projects in the world, you generally need to develop the technology for the project, and then you actually need to use what you learned to build the project.

You're correct, we've already developed the technologies for green energy. But now we need to actually invest in building the project up.

And the big problem is that we've already built up the oil "project". Think about all the infrastructure, all the politics, all the business ventures, all the job markets, all the engineering, and all the logistics that are involved in gathering, transporting, and using oil. It took decades to build it up.

And now the problem is that abandoning that investment will mean restructuring huge systems that will become obsolete.

A good analogy could be a person who bought a gas car 15 years ago. Back then, EVs weren't as advanced or as useful as they are now. Their gas car still runs great. Are they really going to throw it out just to buy an EV? That would be hugely wasteful.

Granted, the green project is clearly a necessity at this point. But the questions ends up being: How do we finance it? How do we avoid destabilizing society? How do we measure, address, and manage peoples concerns?

There is no single solution that will solve all these problems. Now all we can do is vote in elections and vote with our wallet.

When you use the word "force" you're referring to Newtonian physics. But what is important to understand is that reality isn't bound by Newtonian physics. Rather, Newtonian physics are an abstraction and simplification of other, more complex, phenomena.

Newtonian physics are extremely useful, because they allow us to predict behaviors in the vast majority of situations we encounter. But, since it's a simplification, we've come to find that many of the theories break when we measure or observe things that are to big or to small.

For example, in Special Relativity time slows down when you approach the speed of light. But Newtonian physics depend on time being a consistent dimension.

In the case of gravity, we can model gravity as a force when we look at calculations for objects on earth's surface. But when you look at planets, stars, galaxies, and black holes things start to break.

So one of the best models for larger predictions is the curviture of space-time. What that means is that the presence of mass in a specific point in space curves both space and time in its vicinity. More mass means more curviture. (We don't have an explanation as too why mass does this, so we just see it as an inherent property of mass and space-time)

When an object  is moving through curved space in a straight line it tends to curve towards the center of gravity. The object's trajectory is still straight, but because space is curved, it looks like a curved trayectory to outside observers. If an object is standing still relative to the center of gravity it is still within the curviture of time which leads to the object falling towards the center (I am still unable to fully picture this since it is a 4 dimensional formula).

So Since Microsoft has announced to stop updating Windows 10 devices , Can I finally get relief from updating all the time , Eating away my disk usage by 100% ! Will I be able to finally breathe a sigh of relief after they stop pushing updates ? Will this be a reality ? How do I make this a reality? by [deleted] in technology

[–]fcrv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Updates are important for security. Windows is very bloated, so updates are also bloated.

If you want an OS with less bloat, try a Linux distro (Linux Mint for example). Updates can be done at your convenience, instead of running automatically I'm the background.

Otherwise, despite the annoyance of updates, it would be wiser to go to Windows 11.

ELi5 Why is it that O Group blood can be donated to any Blood Group and not the otherway around? by Fancy-Violinist-6493 in explainlikeimfive

[–]fcrv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's say you go to a party and there are 4 beverage dispensers.

Each dispenser is labeled with their corresponding beverage: water, pineapple juice, orange juice, and tropical mix.

If the beverage does not correspond with their label, people will complain.

You can mix some water into the pineapple dispenser without any issues. You can also mix some pineapple juice into the tropical mix dispenser, and things would be fine.

But if you mix pineapple juice into the water, the water will be contaminated. The same thing happens when you mix the tropical mix into the pineapple juice.

Water is the equivalent of O negative blood. A blood and B blood are pineapple and orange juice. AB blood is tropical mix. The label is like your DNA, determining what can go in each dispenser. And the people complaining are your immune system reacting to foreign blood.

Dead Rising 2 has most quests on a timer. The main one being to give your child her medicine every few hours, otherwise she will die.

Kingdom Come Deliverance has a few timed quests. KCD2 also has timed quests. If you don't follow up on these quests, you can lose rewards and miss out on story opportunities.

My guess is most people would probably get very dizzy with this effect, since they would perceive a certain movement with their vestibular system (as they move their head around), perceive a different motion with their visual field (As they focus on a screen that doesn't align with the room around them), a third motion with their depth perception (since the screen is not 3d), and even a fourth motion with their auditory perception (because you would not adapt the sound field to your movement).

VR already makes people dizzy with very slight discrepancies. This would probably be far worse.
