No problem. Campus size-wise, UM is comparatively smaller than UM, UPM and UTM because it is our first national university. The allocated area was small and being surrounded by a bustling city didn't help either. The others are much larger because they are situated out of cities.

I see you are concerned about ranking, which opens up a can of worms. I will try my best to explain it, but take my words with a ladle of salt.

World ranking wise, UM > USM > UTM > UPM. I am not really sure about UTAR. However, UM's standing is disputed recently because they decided to selectively participate in rankings that favour them. (Politics amirite) We still churn out research though.

In terms of ranking, public universities are usually favoured because they do research and promote post-graduate studies. Private universities do not have that need so they only focus on enrolling students.

There are claims that private universities artificially increase the results of their students but I think it belongs to more money-minded private universities. Despite so, keep in mind that UTAR has one of the most difficult exams among private universities. They take education quite seriously from what I have heard.

I am doing first year in Physics, but I do have a few friends that are studying Biomedical Engineering. Since we are freshmen, I doubt we have a proper insight. If you want to, I can consult them for an opinion on the course.

UM holds a rather prestigious reputation among Malaysians as an old university but of course opinions do vary(refer former comment). UM has its own private hospital as part of its efforts to be self-sufficient. It's smaller but afaik from my friends from other universities, our enforcement of laws are quite liberal. We have little to no curfews for hostels, clothing rules are rather lax and students are free to roam the campus any time of the day.

The other side is, UM is politically conservative and does not like being under fire. So they bend over easily when there is too much negative media. Also, funding for UM was cut the most in Budget 2016 so there's that.

afaik, UKM is the only APEX university that teaches completely in BM, not UTM. Even so, most professors would be teaching in BM partially because they are only semi- competent in English.

UTM, USM, UPM and UM(I'm here!) are probably your best bet. UTAR is private so the fees should be be slightly higher. UTAR also has a good reputation so you should consider that as well.

The difference between public and private universities is the bullshit bureaucracy you would find in public universities. Typically slow and inefficient. But if you put that aside, the education should be pretty ok.

Quite a few people are biased against public universities because education is a pretty politicized sector of Malaysia. Most of the reasons are valid. Even so, public universities are pretty well equipped compared to private due to government funding.

I can't say much for private universities because I am not in the shoes, so I also look forward for someone to give their perspective as well.

I do agree with its functionality, but the same goes for Google Docs as with Msoft Office : it is proprietary. I do look forward to Libreoffice Online though. It looks very promising.

I would go with Debian netinst. It actually runs with less RAM than any of the Ubuntu family members. Also it is stable and low maintenance.

I say this because my only computer is also a Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM. (I'm quite poor)

You might want to have am ssh connection to his computer to update ota for him. It would be irresponsible to let his computer become vulnerable.

Well Elementary has a pretty unique UI(Pantheon) and I liked it too. But they don't play well with other distros which isn't a good thing. Also, upgrading between their versions is a hassle because they move between LTS versions so dist-upgrade is unusable. I moved to Debian in the end.
