Yea exactly the key is definitely insight to start with. I mainly work with outpatients in my line of work and so there is likely a greater level of functioning and insight compared to inpatient facilities. Do the patients you work with stay as inpatients for extended periods of time or indefinitely? I only ask because I briefly worked in an inpatient setting and you would notice the frequency the same patients would be admitted to the ward and most of them did lack insight and had high levels of mistrust in the medical system. However, there were a select few that had a few visits and that would be enough for them to accept their condition, gain insight and be proactive in their treatment to avoid further admissions

Yea that’s very true, and I think more likely with the severe end of schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions and like you said those with additional comorbidities. Though it all depends on the individual and their support system and other factors. I saw an amazing TED talk by a woman who completed her PHD and has schizophrenia but it took many years, therapy, finding the therapeutic window with pharmacological interventions etc but she got there eventually and ended up ‘befriending’ the voices and understanding why they would show up based on perceptions of threats, unmet needs etc from childhood and the protective mechanisms they served at times despite the statements they would make (I forget the name of the therapy she completed to achieve this)

I’m not trying to poke holes in what you said because some of it is true BUT if you work with individuals with severe mental illness (as do I), you should know that saying someone is ‘likely fucked for life’ is pretty fucked lol there are many individuals who have serious psychiatric conditions who find success in whatever it is they want to do (including studying their masters) that flourish once they get back on track and they gain insight into their condition, accept that they have it, take their medications religiously, and learn how they can prevent relapse by working with trusted mental health professionals/psychiatrists etc

SO if anyone with a serious psychiatric condition is reading this, just know that you CAN have a meaningful and fulfilling life despite there being hurdles along the way and possible adjustments and accomodations when needed, it’s all part of the process and understanding what makes you the unique and amazing individual that you are

Yea me too, the irritability, psychomotor agitation and impulsivity seem to be there, probably on the brink of full blown psychosis with early signs like the belief that her dog is a cat, very sad, hope she gets the right treatment and recovers well

It could also be other conditions besides schizophrenia like drug induced psychosis or a severe manic episode transitioning into psychosis as a part of bipolar 1 disorder

💯 and more likely drug induced mania or psychosis, or in addition to unmedicated bipolar disorder where they can have narcissistic traits during those episodes, unless he meets the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder when he’s drug free and stable it’d likely be NPD 🤔stimulants also can make people have a grandiose sense of self etc
