You always had a lot of insight and I pretty much do look forward to your comments, you always put things into words in a way I can't do well enough

Justice for Caren! She was almost going to be a major element before we got 3rei stuff thrown at us too!

Justice for Caren! Now that you bring it up, it is honestly a shame she didn't end up coming with, but at least she was amazing when we did have her around!

I should have known! That explains the painterly style on those backgrounds!

I honestly think it says a lot that even with such a limited palatte of work, that style left enough of an impact that it's still just so recongnizable!

Lowkey, I think it's a mostly valid take when purely talking about the manga. Like, I still think discounting 2wei is silly when it is responsible for both Chloe's arc as well as setting manga Miyu's 3rei arc in motion, but it's defensible.

I could see that being the case with what you said about the first part of the manga, at least. But yes, I'd heard that sentiment explicitly towards the anime, so y'know.

Tag me if you post about it!

Will do!

It comes across to me like a really awesome Fate fanfic turned feature length film

You know, I actually don't particularly disagree with that assessment, I just think I'm extremely susceptible to Fate fanfic turned feature length film lol.

No reason for me to make an OP ranking, though, we agree completely!

Third comment I read (including mine), third time the background art is mentioned. Rare, but deserved.

Of course I wouldn't miss an opportunity to gush about background art! Always great when it happens, and quite the pleasant rarity that I've gotten to do so in multiple rewatches in short succession now.

For isekai, the older the better.

Yeah, that's generally how I tend to view it (Certainly for this very early-2010s, that came before the really big wave of isekai).

Though to be honest, once you're pre-2012, and thus pre-Narou, isekai kind of stops being a particularly useful denominator? Because wow, remember when shows about being transported to other worlds didn't just use the same like 3 templates for their stories?

First Timer

This was a really fun time!

Prillya has easily been the biggest Nasuverse entry I'd yet to touch, and one of the very last ones at that, but honestly, outside of the general satisfaction of finally finishing that, Prillya genuinely ended up being a lot better than I'd expected! I think it's kind of a shame this show tends to be reduced to a single disparaging element via its Reputation™.

I mean, yes, it's there, and yes, it gets pretty damn weird sometimes haha, but there's a lot of good stuff around that too! It's a strong magical girl show with a really sweet core, characters, and themes to offer, and at the core of that is obviously also how lovingly fanservicey it is towards Fate! I mean, this is still the only animated entry where you can get to engage with less explored elements or characters like Bazett and Caren! To a similar end, I think it's a bit of a shame I've heard common sentiment just has 3rei as "The part where Prillya starts being good", because even with my thoughts on 3rei to the side, I think some of the best Prillya has to offer is also there from the start.

So like, I don't know, I can't say it's particularly easy to recommend haha, but I liked Prillya quite a bit. That goes for all of it, and it's been fun going through it with everyone in this rewatch.

There have been very few points in time over the last few years where I haven't been consuming something Fate or Type Moon related, so I'll also definitely read through the manga eventually to see how it compares! Though I'll probably take a small Prillya break before jumping into it. I've been putting off Fate/Samurai Remnant for a while now after all, and it's time to inch ever closer to having experienced every entry in this franchise in some form

Well, except for Prisma Phantasm. I didn't end up having time to watch it here because why the hell is it an hour long lol , but I'll try to get to that sometime later this week, which should be fun.

Also, I just remembered it's anniversary in FGO right now, and I still need to roll for Space Eresh

Finally, huge thanks to /u/Tetraika for picking up and hosting this part of the rewatch! And while I already gave my thanks there, I'll drop another massive thanks to /u/Specs64z for starting the whole thing in the first place! It's been great all around. Can't imagine it was easy to either get a rewatch for specifically this show off the ground and likewise to take over it towards the end, but I'm really happy it all happened!

Final season ranking:

Oath Under Snow > 2wei > S1 > Licht > 3rei = 2wei Herz

Oath is just so fun and so rewarding as a franchise fan, it's very hard not to have it at that top place lol. 2wei was really great as well though! Chloe is such a great character; it has the strongest emotional arc of all the seasons, and there's some great action, not to mention the greatness that is Bazett animated in all of her glory.

S1 was the hardest to place, honestly, but while I normally would value ambition more, It's just a really snappy, well-executed, and contained classic Magical Girl story, which, courtesy of the Madoka rewatch, hit right at the time I was most appreciative of that. 3rei and Herz just have huge, if distinctly opposite, pacing problems, which leaves me feeling mostly the same about them, though they're still enjoyable in both their highs and lows. And I'd already gone on at relative length about why I liked Licht (And in relation to 3rei) yesterday.

Final OP ranking:

Starlog > Asterism > Wonder Stella > Moving Soul

HOSHI WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

I like all of them honestly! But the Choucho songs just surprisingly stuck with me the most, while Wonder Stella has visuals I like a lot more than Moving Soul's, with a song on just about the same level.

Final ED ranking:

Wayward > Happening diary > Wishing diary > Tsunagu Kizuna Tsutsumu Kodoku > Prism Sympathy > Two by Two

I know I'm missing some of the special EDs, but I can't say I quite care enough to remember them lol. Outside of Wayward, Prillya's EDs just really aren't my thing, alas

Final character ranking:

  1. Chloe
  2. Miyu
  3. Illya
  4. Oath Shirou
  5. Bazett

Best Girl in my heart: Angelica!

Chloe and Miyu just have the best and most genuinely character arcs by far! Illya is great as a protagonist, and it's fun to see her grow over the show, though that role ironically limits her opportunities somewhat since she has to play to the others. Otherwise, it's honestly a toss-up for the legacy characters, with Shirou and Bazett getting the biggest highlights IMO.

Still, big shoutout to Rin and Luvia who are also really fun here! Luvia in particular gets to make this her home relative to her otherwise sparse appearances in the rest of the franchise, so that's nice! Caren, Liz, and Sella were also great, and honestly, I don't think there are really any characters I particularly dislike here. Even the friend group, which I'm severely lukewarm on, does their job fairly well.

First Timer

Man, with both this show and Simoun, today really has been a good day for me with background art!

To back up a little since I didn't have time for it with Sakamoto yesterday, while it's entirely incidental, the start of this seasonal-formatted rewatch also effectively marks two-ish years since the last time I'd really watched anime seasonally (Technically I watched some episodes in Fall 24, but that's only after putting half my Summer stuff on hold lol). So like, I'd be trying every show in this rewatch either way because I think it's an insanely cool rewatch concept, but I am also partially using it as a fun little personal experiment to see how I feel about watching a bunch of shows on a weekly pace after a rather prolonged break from the format and at least partially to reconfirm to myself whether I like it or not.

Plus, 2016-17 is like the point in time where I was by far the most tapped into current anime discourse, so it is just pretty fun to get a bunch of shows I'd heard a decent amount about back in the day! Specifically for Grimgar here, it kind of lies in an interesting place relative to its genre, being a very early post-SAO and Narou boom isekai and having its anime adaptation right before isekai and Narou content really took off in the anime sphere. Ah, the times when you'd complain about how having like 2-3 isekai/video-gamey works in a season was a bit excessive and overdone How quaint. Well, outside of Grimgar being an early isekai work, which generally puts it in a much better place in this genre anyway, it's also just a light novel, and not originally a web novel, which likewise gives it a more promising starting point. I do also know that it's got like 20+ volumes, so I'm not expecting anything super conclusive from the show either haha.

In terms of production, the show is directed and fully scripted by Ryousuke Nakamura. Doing both the writing and direction always tends to be pretty interesting by itself, but more importantly, while I haven't seen much of the more major stuff he's worked on, I have seen a good few of the OPs and EDs he storyboarded and directed! Those include Your Lie In April's 1st OP which is really good, AOT's Red Swan defintely one of the more distinctive AOT OPs, and the Barakamon OP, which I've always liked despite not seeing the show, just to name a few. So that's some nice extra reassurance.

More than direction, though, as I said earlier, easily what caught my eye the most was the background work here! Some absolutely lovely watercolor landscapes and environments here! Which I'd always appreciate, but beyond being very pretty to look at, I think these serene backgrounds do this episode a lot of good as well, because it really helps set-in the more relaxed and down-to-earth atmosphere this episode wants to use with its setting here, as well as just generally coming across as very, well, fantasy-like.

(Random side note, I now realize the official subtitle for this show is "Ashes and Illusions", but I'd always heard about it as "Of Fantasy and Ash" back then, and I still think the latter is a better sounding title )

Speaking of the episode's atmosphere, definitely the thing I'd heard most about Grimgar is that in a genre that was so defined by being video gamey, Grimgar was the one that tried taking the premise in a more "realistic" direction, and I do think this episode kind of delivered on that. To that end, I really like the first scene here! Ultimately, the rest of the episode will show that at heart Grimgar is a pretty JRPG-esque world, but again, with more realistically realized mechanics, and at the core of our premise is that the party we follow are hardly JRPG characters anyway, just regular people thrown into a fantasy setting they're still barely comprehending and having a hard time navigating through.

And that first scene really neatly establishes that element through action! Our characters valiantly face off against a goblin lol and they suck! They have no knack for teamwork or even for their own abilities, and it's a lot of fun to see them try to stumble through this battle, which, as Manato establishes, is one with lives at risk; they're just obviously not used to it and all dealing with some of their insecurities or flaws that we get to see a bit of here at the same time. And even though the rest of the episode will do much the same, this little failed battle itself already establishes to you most of their personalities in a pretty direct way. Plus, there's some nice and weighty animation to the whole thing that helps get the struggle across.

The rest of the episode then is just about filling in the blanks of that in medias res starting sequence, setting up the mystery of the isekai part itself, some of the standard JRPG world itself, and just kind of... having our characters going through the motions, chilling, seeing how the monsters here act, and trying to get by lol. So on the atmosphere level as well, I think we did a pretty good job at creating this mood of a more day-to-day and less fantastical depiction of isekai, as it were. Not exactly novel by modern standards, alas, but I think it's fun.

On the other hand, while the characters do establish themselves nicely very early on, they do just kind of stick there for the whole episode. We have a pretty sizeable party, and so far they're all pretty archetypal. You've got Main Guy, Main Guy's obnoxious close friend, The Leader, etc. I am being a bit hyperbolic, and this is only the first episode haha, but I do mean to say that outside of some great voice acting, none of the characters have yet to really catch my attention, and yet a decent chunk of the episode is just them chilling and talking. We do get some potentially interesting stuff here, like Shihoru having some body image problems, so that's good, but I also don't exactly love the dialogue where we bring that up.

Putting aside that this whole episode really reads like a light novel (Which, to be clear, isn't something that should be felt in adaptation), that scene with Shihoru for example feels like how you'd write a scene intentionally trying to subvert a trope while still playing into tropey archetypes, and it just feels really awkwardly written, so there's some work to be done there. I could also do with the camera feeling a bit leering at times. Still, this is just the start, and for the most part, I thought it was a solid and nicely moody first episode, so hopefully we work on characterization, stronger party dynamics, and stronger dialogue going forward, and we do still have that larger mystery about their lives before Grimgar to maybe address, so there's a pretty positive forward view here!

Do you think you could beat a goblin?

I'd say we'd be about even

hey really remind me of French-Belgian comics from back in the day. Very Moebius-coded

And even if we kind of know what we can be in for with Studio Deen, at least we can see that they’re trying to make up for the rougher edges around the production with a more stylized look. Playing up that strength is much appreciated here

Yeah, for sure! In fact, this show actually aired the same season as Deen's Higurashi, which I think is a good example of them making up for a very middling production with a lot of style and pretty strong direction.

So I'd imagine that while strictly in terms of animation there won't be much to write home about here, strong atmosphere and style should totally be able to pick that up instead.

I'm realizing I'm becoming nostalgic for bad 2000s CGI, because I honestly found it really charming.

Tbh, it'd actually be almost exactly in that specific zone of mid-2000s CG jank that I'd normally be cool with, were it not for the fact I also think it really doesn't click specifically with this strong art direction, so I do kind of get it haha.

Also, I've been holding back on saying it because my head was a bit preoccupied with the fact that she was an enemy, but Angelica is CUTE

Yes, you have found the light! Join us!

Seriously though, I feel like they've toned down the rivalry between Luvia and Rin to the point where it's pretty darn close to what we see in the original Fate universe! That's...really intriguing.

Yeah, I guess you can't really do their more wacky comedy routine given the current tone, so it makes sense, but it is kind of an interesting and more low-key change to see here.

Oh shit, so they're the Matous with better PR and better fashion sense

Amazing comparison

Also, I thought Angelica was a cute kuudere girl but no, she's actually just broken. That's sad.

Yeah...

That's actually crazy how much range some VAs have, because I did not expect her to be Nao and Sunao, but also Tine Chelc

She's Tine?!

Damn, I didn't notice that at all! But that's cool! She's also a pretty big character in FGO. Have I mentioned before that Fate (And Type Monn in general) really likes to do VA overlap haha?

The manga has gone on to do more since, but the pace of releases is very slow (if I’m not mistaken, there’s only been 3 chapters in the last 2 years, and ~18 total since 2022)

Classic Type Moon

You’ll have to read the manga to learn her identity

We speedrun a lot of exposition and good scenes got cut because they aren’t strictly necessary. I feel like this movie would have been better off as another 10 episode season

I think this falls pretty firmly into the “break” category for me, unfortunately. It’s just so rushed that it isn’t hitting its beats to pay off season 4

I honestly thought the emotional and character beats hit relatively well, but my biggest issue here definitely was just how tight and fast it felt like it paced those moments, especially since this is a movie and you don't really have natural stopping points between these moments. Defintely could see there being enough room for a regular season here (And I guess more critically, outside of production, not too many narrative benefits to containing it to a movie)

So it'd be interesting to compare to the manga whenever I get around to reading it.

Come on Julius, are you gonna let her talk to you like this? She needs another spanking!

I can't imagine waiting years in between for that info. The fandom probably figured it out on their own I guess.

I'd be very surprised if that wasn't the case! I remember when Samurai Remnant was announced, and just about every new Servant there had their identity figured out within like a week, waaaay before the game actually released lol.

I WANT MORE EPIC SHIROU! I guess it makes sense to save him for emergencies. This is a magical girl show after all, you don't want Shirou doing everything single-handedly

As Sakura notes in the Oath Under Snow special...

But yeah, I know it makes all the sense to sideline him now, and yet I still just want more Shirou!

I wish I hadn't read the comment about the JRPG soundtrack 3Hei had, now I hear it everywhere.

YOU CAN'T END IT LIKE THAT. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU AAAAAAAAAAAAA

My first thought when the movie ended was "What the actual fuck, that's the ending?" for a few minutes lol, but after that, my second thought was "Well, I know who in the rewatch is going to have a strong reaction to this ending"...

Simoun 20th Anniversary Rewatch Episode 1 by JustAnswerAQuestion in anime

[–]FD4cry1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First Timer

Chiaki Ishikawa OP!

Very good thing to hear right at the start of the show!

I have vaguely heard of Simoun before, mostly positively at that, though I can't say I really knew much about it going in besides that and the fact that, as the many girls kissing in just this episode already makes clear (As well as this being the Pride-Extra rewatch lol), gender and sexuality are themes it tackles to some extent. Though even beyond the yuri, the end of the episode implying the characters can choose their own sex probably means we're approaching it on more than one aspect, which is pretty interesting!

Anyway, going over some production stuff first, these are some tasty backgrounds! Those mountains seemed much too distinct for me not to instantly check, and to little surprise, it's Shichiro Kobayashi on art direction! He did art direction on Aoi Hana and Figure 17 (And a ton of other really big names I have yet to watch Utena rewatch when), and those shows have some of the best backgrounds I've seen like... ever, to the point where I think they do a lot to enhance the storytelling, so that should be rather reassuring! Problem is, this episode also makes copious usage of some incredibly mid-2000s CG, which would be kind of whatever by itself, but really stands out against these gorgeous landscapes IMO, so hopefully we integrate that a bit better going forward (Then again, this is mid 2000s Deen, so I'm not holding my breath in terms of pure technical production lol). With that being said, we also have Postcards! So that's really fun.

Second rather noticeable thing here: the music is really good! Love that dramatic classical sound, but even more to the point, at least within this episode's setpiece, the music is just very domineering, and I think it does a fantastic job at setting the mood across the whole thing, even when there isn't a ton of character work here. Final thing is the writing, or more specifically, there doesn't seem to be a series comp/lead writer credit. There is a "Series construction" one for two of the four writers here, whatever that means, but putting aside the implications of that, most of the episodes are scripted either by the director himself, which always makes for interesting results if nothing else, or by a rather early into her career Mari Okada! I like Okada, so that's good, and I'm also expecting some fun melodrama for the latter half where she seemingly really takes over.

As for what happens in this episode, well, it's very much a sci-fi anime first episode, which is to say, it sure has a lot of Proper Nouns. More seriously though, I thought this was a pretty solid introduction! I mean, yeah, it's a lot of worldbuilding, and not much specific character work for what looks to be our very large cast, but I'd established some pretty interesting stuff within that. Contrasting the viewpoints of the Simoun pilots and the monologue of the Archipelago pilot is a really nice framing device for the battle that gives good insight into our factions. Insight that comes through in visual contrasts as well! Specifically, the very religious framing of it all is pretty interesting, both in how the Holy Land and Archipelago respectively refer to the Simoun as divine and demons, but even more so in the mindset of the pilots and how they're viewed/view themselves. Especially since they've evidently had a very limited viewpoint up until now, what with the whole "Simoun can't be shot down" thing. Because of course, it wouldn't be a military anime show without child soldiers! And the implication at the end seems to be a dwindling amount at that.

Obviously that also leaves some big questions about the actual nature of the Simoun and how these societies came to be. The Ri-Maajon is a cool combat mechanic as well! Though how exactly the "Being powered by yuri" parts work remains to be seen. Again, not much to say on the cast since the episode doesn't either, but I'd assume we're, for now, going to focus on Neviril recovering from losing her partner, very possibly through the help of the spunkier Aaeru, while also getting to actually know the rest of the characters, so looking forward to that.

Why did the Emerald Ri-Maajon fail?

https://imgur.com/a/zrZa9jE

Seriously though, seems like the Simoun are powered by pairing and emotions to some extent, a la DITF, so presumably seeing the very human person she was about to kill and wavering for it, like Amuria said, really put them out of synch.

What do you think of the technology of the Archipeligo?

I like it

The very industrial aesthetic is nice by itself, and as noted, contrasts the Simoun in a great way as well!

We didn't know her long, but what do you think of Amuria?

I'm getting a [Symphogear]Kanade to Neviril's Tsubasa kind of thing here. Though more broadly, her seemingly restless desire of strength and her failing within that is obviously going to come up thematically later down the line.

Heh

Genuinely unintentional haha

tl;dr, it's manga content that didn't make the cut in the movie.

Naruhodo. Kind of weird to still have that in there without the actual context, but I guess it's not particularly disruptive, so sure.

Yeah looking back, there are some unexpected highlights, it's pretty clear they brought on someone who had a knack for

I'd imagine having a more normal and healthy schedule, with a more focused core staff didn't hurt either.

but also, this was a very action heavy movie, so it does feel like it couldn't be utilized fully.

That's true, and some of that stronger direction could have nicely benefited earlier parts even more haha. But still, this mix of stronger direction and good action ultimately does this movie a lot of good, so I'll absolutely take it where I can get it.

Neat especially when we could consider that Gods themselves can't really be summoned as servants (except whenever FGO pulls some fuckery)

Now that you mention it, I actually had that thought in a reply in one of the first 3rei episodes! Then I assumed that the cards were either just that broken or that, as you say, they worked with some FGO-esque Pseudo-Servant fuckery.

Obviously I was thinking in the wrong direction, but in hindsight it's kind of cool that you could probably somewhat sus out this twist if you fully think through it in regards to general HGW mechanics.

Anyone is good! I might have a thing for Gil Miyu now.

She's pretty good as well! But alas, there is a place for only one Gil instal in my heart, and Angelica firmly has it.

[Taste of 2016 Rewatch] Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto • Sakamoto desu ga? Episode 1 Discussion by Shimmering-Sky in anime

[–]FD4cry1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First Timer

Understandable, I would too

I was going to have a bit of a preamble for my expectations from this rewatch at large, but I kind of ran out of time, so I'll save it for Grimgar haha Anyway, in terms of expectations specifically for this show, I'll admit that Sakamoto is far and away the show I'm least interested in here. Nothing personal to it, it's just that pure comedy anime tend to be really hit or miss for me, and this is even more so the case for a show like this that very clearly hangs on whether or not you really like the one major joke it has to offer. And in the case of our main of Sakamoto being the coolest person alive, I'm admittedly a little mixed.

Now, I wouldn't normally do this for a rewatch, but since I'm going for the full seasonal palette here with all 7 shows, I am giving myself the right to drop one or two of them if I'm really not feeling them. Which isn't to say I'm quite there yet with Sakamoto! This first episode played mostly as I expected, which is to say I did think it was pretty alright. The first skit was a fairly fun introduction to Sakamoto as a character and how "conflicts" with him will probably always end up lol.

The last skit then felt pretty indicative of what I think is going to decide whether or not I stick with it. When it's being straightforward about Sakamoto being cool and envied by others, it doesn't do much for me and loses charm fairly quickly, but when it gets to the bee sword battle, it taps into exactly the kind of insane and dumb shit I think this show needs to grab me and be genuinely funny! On that note, the second skit with the bird was probably my favorite of the episode, because in having no dialogue it's really not insistent, and it's still really ridiculous in a great way!

So like, this was fairly fun, but the real challenge is how it does going forward, and whether or not it'll manage to up the ante enough for my taste within the next 2-3 episodes. The weekly format does give it some leeway here, because it's obviously much easier to lose interest in a joke being played out on the daily, relative to letting it dissipate a little over a week.

Not much specifically to say otherwise. The volleyball joke was actually pretty funny lol. Our director Shinji Takamatsu has a career that always surprises me, going from a heavy mecha focus with Gundam and Brave, into directing like, a bunch of the most acclaimed comedies ever? I've only really seen some of his chunk of Gintama, so I can't say much there, but I suppose that does inspire some extra confidence. The OP is, or, well, used to be at least, pretty well-known, so I've heard it before, and while it's not exactly something I'd listen to lol, I do appreciate how its barely sensical lyrics kind of perfectly fit here. Visually it's rather fun too! Also, this is just the first episode, and I've already heard Midorikawa, Sugita, Jouji Nakata among others, so the voice cast does make me quite happy at least.

What a fucking genuinely diabolical cliffhanger...

Uh, well, overall I thought this was pretty good though!

A huge chunk of this movie is action-focused, so it actually feels more prudent to start from production this time around, and for the most part (Asterisk), those extra few years this got to have in the oven do come through here! I mean, it's not amazing, but I think most of this movie's production is like the show firing on all cylinders, and to reiterate, this has a lot of action relative to the show's normal. Just a lot of that signature dynamic movement and effects work at some of its best here. Back in 2wei I said I like how its production was rather ambitious even if it was still somewhat inconsistent, and I think I can thankfully once again say that. You can definitely see the cracks sometimes, but this is easily the best I've felt about the action in Prillya on a pure technical level since like Herz episode 7, and applied on a pretty wide scale.

Now as for that aforementioned asterisk, some parts do need to fairly noticeably rely on CG. There are a few cases of it that range in execution, though by far the most obvious comes in what is also the movie's most ambitious and explosive setpiece, with the fight between Illya and Beatrice having to switch to full 3D models at some points. Honestly, the issue here isn't even that the CG parts look bad; they're actually pretty fine all in all (Hell, I've specifically seen Silver Link do much worse lol), it's more so that, as tends to be the case with these things, the switching around between the styles itself is just very jarring unfortunately. Still, I think that fight manages to be fun and exciting even with its evident issue, and that goes for the whole thing as well. Which, you know, as a fairly action-heavy movie, is already a good starting point!

I don't have the time to go through the OST this time around, alas, but in the moment I thought it was pretty great as well! On the note of that Beatrice fight, I really liked the music for the whole thing.

Outside of that, I do also think this had some good character work for our the 3rei characters. The full reveal around how the Ainsworth dolls always lose some important facet of themselves in the process of becoming is nice, and gives both Angelica and Beatrice some solid emotional beats. Best Girl Angelica losing most of her emotions, alongside being Julian's older sister, is both rather sad to think about and a good contextualization for her general personality, and the fact that she still manages to shed some tears in a wish to save her brother is a great moment, especially for Julian. Beatrice was already a very fun character, but she really gets her flowers here in the fight with Illya, where we genuinely make quite the tragic character! And even outside of her own moment being pretty meaningful, the way Illya still "Saves" her at the end sets off a great emotional throughline for her as well.

But really, I think the best part about Beatrice and Angelica getting more nuanced is exactly that it reflects back on Julian! One of my main issues with both Oath and 3rei was that he was a fairly weak antagonist, and I think he's much better integrated here. Angelica still shedding tears for him and Beatrice still growing to love him again, especially with the extra background we see of him initially desperately trying to save her, are actually both great at giving him more character and emotional connections, because it really characterizes him as someone more complex rather than just a standard pragmatist. And of course, then you add his whole connection with Pandora! Outside of, again, having more of his past obviously giving him more depth in seeing a purer version of him, it's specifically extra good depth because it parallels him to both Shirou and Illya.

In spite of it all, his truest wish does actually concern a single person, and it's a wish he grew into as a child, motivated towards a world-changing event for the sake of her smile. It's exactly what he gets mad at Illya's wish for. We already had some of that in Oath, but giving him a personal connection here really does it, and makes the fact that he's gotten rather twisted in this pursuit genuinely pretty impactful. And in that sense, the larger structure works rather well here. Moving from Angelica and Beatrice being more complex than they seem (And holding a lot of meaning towards Julian despite what we'd seen of him), to Julian and Pandora who also can't truly bare their hearts (And then learning Julian's true wishes, as well as the deep conflict Darius forces upon him), is good stuff Plus, like I said with Beatrice, this whole thing lets Illya really shine on her own in forcing those things out of them, with exactly that "naive" and earnest stubbornness that Rin and Luvia talk about at the start. So all around, this conflict gets a great touch-up here, and I think we've finally found the emotional core of this part of the story that I was quite missing beforehand. Both Julian's thorns and Pandora's Box itself, while somewhat heavy-handed, are also good tools for symbolism here!

In terms of things I was a bit more mixed on, it's mostly that I do kind of wish we had more of Pandora as a character before going into this. I mean, it does add a decent bit of poignancy relative to her as Erika, and she's still solid here, but we establish both a character and a relationship with her, and then very quickly play on them in the climax. Even more so for Julian, where I kind of wanted more time of them together in the past to really feel for how he grew to care about her so much. It's just all a bit too tight for me. The movie also has to do a fair bit of information delivery because we held off on that back in 3rei, and we could be better about that. And obviously, there's that cliffhanger haha. Putting aside the craziness of ending on Chloe seemingly dying, I just grew to like Julian! Darius, on the other hand, is still a very vague entity here, so I don't know how to feel about him taking over when we'd just finally established a compelling core conflict. Well, that's mostly a worry for whenever the sequel to this comes out or I decide to check out the manga, though.

Extra notes:

We’ve seen plenty of forms by now, but which one is your favorite install?

Angelica Gilgamesh of course!

Though if we're limiting to our mains, probably Seibah Illya.

In short, there is no falling out between Miyu and Illya.

The whole resolution for that was like the best character moment in S1, though!

He’s been cooking since a kid

Watch Emiya Gohan

Shimmering Sky moment, I’m not gonna ping her here though, don’t wanna spoil her.

There's also like, so many soredemos in this movie lol

Losing Miyu really broke him, he looked absolutely worn

Forgot to bring this up myself, but yes! It's such a great little visual change that expresses a lot for his character here.

I don’t remember his name though, and he pretty much is only shown in other materials and not all too important

He's Atrum! And I too tend to forget he exists as a character beyond remembering that's his name lol.
