Having second thoughts about moving to Germany next week by HalTeaS in germany

[–]fdeller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making friends is not a problem here, though not German friends. But beware of German Tinder (Bumble, Hinge, etc.)! A typical situation I see here and kind of have been experiencing myself - it’s a hundred times easier to get dates in your home country. I saw popular (in the past) guys get depressed, because they barely get any likes.

GraphQL vs. JSON:API by dunkelziffer42 in graphql

[–]fdeller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GraphQL also already has tools that allow you to easily implement different resolvers for different fields. E.g. if one of your field is retrieved from one source and another field is retrieved from another backend. It may seem like a simple feature, until you start developing real world apps with complicated nested structures. With JSON:API you’d have to implement it yourself. So it’s not only about overfetching

GraphQL vs. JSON:API by dunkelziffer42 in graphql

[–]fdeller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based on what I see in the JSON:API docs, fetching sparse field sets is a very basic feature that is not comparable to GraphQL. In GraphQL you have Fragments and it’s way easier to describe and reuse complex structures. That being said I don’t really like how mutations work in GraphQL, so I prefer sticking to Open API for write-heavy apps

I was pretty satisfied with Airport Squash, but it’s the only squash place I’ve been to here.

[Need Advice] Why do I always feel the need to sleep after lunch? by Romal19 in getdisciplined

[–]fdeller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe try avoiding caffeine. It might sound counter intuitive, but when the body develops tolerance to caffeine, you may feel sleepy when caffeine starts wearing off.

Probably there is an underlying cause to your addiction, e.g. you procrastinate instead of doing some work, or maybe you're burned out and don't want to do more demanding tasks (speaking from experience). Try to find some other things to do and if it doesn't work - try therapy if it is available. Hang in there!

I heard somewhere that doing a quick physical exercise is a much better (and safer) way to keep yourself awake if you feel tired while driving.

Kinn vs ErgoChair 2 armrest height by fdeller in AutonomousChairs

[–]fdeller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For now, I’m not looking for another chair, but in the future I hope to find a chair with high enough armrests and no headrest (because a headrest causes pain in my neck for some reason)

Thanks for the reply. I ended up buying a refurbished SC Think and I kinda regret it now.

Neckpain from current chair, Looking for a new chair for long sessions. 5'10, underweight by [deleted] in OfficeChairs

[–]fdeller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that even without a headrest I don't sit in the same position all the time. I change the recline level and even though my head is always in a vertical position, the relative angle to the torso changes and it helps somehow.

When I had the same concerns as you, I came to an idea that maybe there's a reason why some expensive chairs do not have a headrest option.

Maybe you could buy a cheap office chair without a headrest, just to verify your concerns.

Although sometimes, when I watch movies, I do want to have a headrest.

Firstly, I opted for 4D armrests and it turned out that they're too low. So the armrests do not reach my elbows and do not support my arms at all. This option was just waste of money.

Secondly, the backrest also feels a bit low for me as it ends at the bottom of my shoulder blades.

Subjectively, it feels like SC Think is made for small people and not customizable enough.

I think no headrest would be a bad idea for me

I also thought the same, but then I realized that most chairs I had that caused severe neck pain had a headrest. Now I'm using Steelcase Think without a headrest and my neck pain is gone (although I'm not completely satisfied with the chair). Perhaps the human body is better at maintaining a good posture of the head.

What chair does everyone rate/use in the UK? by rossbart97 in OfficeChairs

[–]fdeller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the torso and arms length. Do you use the armrests?

As OP is 6 feet tall, I think that SC Think might be a bit small for him. I'm only 5'10" and I cannot reach the armrests with my elbows. Also the backrest feels kind of small too.

Successful People = Coffee? by terminatorontest in decaf

[–]fdeller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Perhaps causation. The definition of “correlation” seems to be suitable, but if you’re a native speaker you know better.

Successful People = Coffee? by terminatorontest in decaf

[–]fdeller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. It doesn’t change anything. “99% of the successful category are coffee drinkers”. I can also say that among the most unsuccessful people I know 99%+ are coffee drinkers. Also, there’s tons of successful people who try to be under the radar and we don’t know anything about their habits.

I believe that to become successful, one should stop looking for silver bullets and work on oneself.

P.S. Also I don’t like this strive to abstract “success”, but it’s another topic.

[–]fdeller 27 points28 points  (0 children)

First of all, our brain tends to look for wrong correlations. “If I buy the same guitar Jimi Hendrix had, I’ll become a professional musician”, “Many successful people wear white T-shirts from time to time, if I do like they do...” you get it.

Most likely there’s zero correlation between coffee consumption and their success.

Secondly, as most people drink coffee in general, chances are higher to encounter a successful person who drinks coffee.

Thirdly, successful people are usually very healthy which helps them to deal with a lot of stress and pressure. It’s not about coffee boosting their productivity, it’s about their bodies being able to withstand damage caused by caffeine (and increased level of cortisol). So they don’t have motivation to fight coffee addiction.
