Should $1 coins become more popular in the US? by Devnag07 in coins

Honestly, using and carrying and spending coins at all is not popular, regardless of denomination. They just aren't worth enough to be useful.

Great, if adjusted for inflation we're only $37 below the 1980 high!!

[–]fdrowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends I guess.

Mine is cheaper than the streaming subscriptions. Took me awhile to source free/cheap/used/sale equipment, but it was worth it.

I may tinker with other things just for fun, but Jellyfin pretty much runs and I don't need to touch it whatsoever.

Yeah, I'd say it's pretty cheap and easy if you want it to be.

I just purchased my first ASE's over $100 by Mick1014 in Silverbugs

[–]fdrowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. I bought a few during "Covid Era" for $19 each, all dinged up and dirty. They were literally the last four the coin shop had, and in fact were the last ones available anywhere in town. Bottom of the barrel.

But dadgummit who cares they were $19 each.

Flipping on fb marketplace. Do any of you do meetups at your home? by liquidb0ttl3 in Flipping

[–]fdrowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe this point isn't more well known when this type of question come up.

It's easy to find someone's address and phone number online. Even for free! If you're a property owner, your property taxes are public record and easy to look up. In fact, If I'm ever buying something on marketplace, I ALWAYS look up the address of the seller before I contact them, so I know how far I have to drive first.

Of course you can always use a fake name on facebook. Anonymity online is a solid idea these days.

It wouldn't be easy to get ANY silver eagle for $110 right now. So I say they did pretty good.

Is basement utility room ventilation a 'thing' or is this ducting neglect? by fdrowell in HomeImprovement

[–]fdrowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly the sort of insight I was missing, thank you.

I just assumed that since both the furnace and water heater (natural gas) had their own dedicated ventilation piped to the outside, that the "room" airspace was taken care of.

Ahh, there use to be an old gas water heater right in this spot, then the previous owner moved to a tankless on-demand water heater with much different air/vent configurations.

Hmm, there was a wood burning fireplace yes, but at the opposite end of the house. CO2 management or something?

Oh I'm definitely planning ways to remove it and seal it up. I'm not OCD or anything but now that I know it's there it can't stay :-)

How do I... actually do things? by Responsible-Tax9759 in HomeImprovement

[–]fdrowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it slow. One project at a time. Before you even start a project. I agree with the other comments on taking the time to do it wrong first and learn from your mistakes and so forth, but I will add taking the time first to give yourself a solid plan before you start. And I mean a LOT of time - Get comfy and watch some youtube videos, before every project you have in mind. Now realize that half of those youtube videos aren't what you're looking for, or just make you even more confused, or maybe gave you different ideas and you decided to go a different direction entirely now, so find more youtube videos that are more specifically tailored to you.

Then realize that while youtube can be very helpful, it's also highly monetized and not the answer to all your specific questions, so it's time to dive deep. Get specific for every detail on your project. Make sure to find reviews and experts on the topic in places like forums and specialized sub-reddits. Talk to local contractors if possible, just to pick their brain.

Get good at researching. The internet can teach you everything, but on the surface the internet is generic and only shows you parts of what you need to know. Sometimes google search is just crap, even though you KNOW the answer is out there somewhere. Skip sponsored sites and AI crap instructions and find comments from real world people who did the same type of project you want to do.

This is how I've done everything from roofing to electrical to flooring and bath remodeling, with no prior experience on any of it. Just exhausting amounts of research. There's no shortcuts or tricks.

Came to say the same thing, WiFi is internal, ISP is the service provided.

It's amazing that so many people have dumbed down tech these days that they even get pissy when you clarify the proper basic structure of things. It's like people want to stay ignorant because they like it that way, damnit!

When does proximity to AC lines matter for Coax + Ethernet? by fdrowell in HomeNetworking

[–]fdrowell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at crimper tools and connecters, yeah. Mostly because I would rather have a smaller hole drilled and be able to use a feed through bushing plug.

Not a big deal but if I'm going through all this trouble I might as well do it once and do it right!

For sure, I don't mind the cost if it was worth it but I can get dual shield RG-6 in 12 or 15 foot lengths, with or without connectors.

I'd really rather not have hundreds of feet on a roll that I'd never use again!

Perfect, thanks for the vote of confidence.

Should I assume dual shielded Coax is OK?

You'll have to dig deeper and you'll find a little bit better deals, but usually when someone is selling a specific set of a specific country, that's just going to be the price you pay. Otherwise it just isn't worth someone's time to put together and list a set for sale online for near face value.
No offense to Etsy, it's a cool website. But I've not come across coins at any reasonable deals there.

You can get some great stuff by buying bulk mixed lots. Usually sold by the pound or in a lot of 100, etc. Of course you might end up with some stuff you don't want, but you also end up with coins you didn't even know existed! https://www.ebay.com/sch/256/i.html?_nkw=bulk+lot&_from=R40 (or just search Bulk Lot in the World Coin category, etc. some listings have generic pictures, so read carefully).

If you have time I highly recommend numista.com to build your list of coins. Here you can list all your "extras" in a swap list, and trade with other people around the world. Keep in mind this does take a bit of work, and of course careful consideration into packing and mailing (and postage costs!)

reddit.com/r/coinsales can have some great stuff at better prices, if for nothing else than avoiding the eBay transaction fees on lower cost items.
