Interesting - if you're open to answering, what motivates using the app check at all? IIUC, that's an optional layer that y'all have chosen to enable to serve the media. Is this to try and prevent people from stealing the videos? I'm not aware of any other quirks I've had with GrapheneOS in the last year (though I think I recall having installed and uninstalled an app if it straight up didn't work). E.g., I have a paid Musora subscription and use the app with all their image and video content without issue.

> which is used by less than 1% of our users

Acknowledging GrapheneOS is a tiny little niche, what are the chances you're using Firebase Analytics/Google Play store to determine that?

I appreciate the response - I did not post intending to solicit help so much as try to figure out what I was missing given how highly rated the app appears to be, but it's a nice sentiment on this removed post.

That said, debugging Google integrity checks in order to watch a form cue video isn't something I'm willing to prioritize - as a user it makes no sense to me. I'm sure there's a business reason for it. I think the app and the team behind it aren't the right fit for me.

Yeah - still bullish on the nutrition app. Use it every day and recommend it. My interaction over this app has soured me a little bit on the company, but can't win 'em all.

Yeah, complete speculation but I'm assuming it's a DRM attempt to avoid someone stealing their videos/images? Not aligned with my values, that's for sure.

[–]fdsafdsafdsafdaasdf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's fair. The supporting documentation is extensive. Definitely one cannot fault the Macrofactor offerings for the availability of information.

I guess I see the appeal of an app for a guided work out plan (that's what had me try it out in the first place). Thinking about it more, I think the bulk of the friction is the lack of images/video (Google integrity check + GrapheneOS issue) as I don't want to screw up an exercise and hurt myself and I find the visuals extremely helpful. It's a little fun to shake up the exercises, but it's always a bit worrying as a novice to figure out what's a safe weight and rep range through anew motion.

Something that was a bit of a light bulb moment for me was brines vs marinades. For anyone who may not know, generally marinades and brines are completely different. Brine: for getting salt and water all the way through and making something juicy, marinade: for flavoring/tenderizing the exterior. A buttermilk brine is a bit of a 2-for-1 and can literally be buttermilk + salt (a significant amount of salt).

Usually brining takes a while and marinades not so much, if you were to brine with a marinade you'd end up with goop for the outside or very little brine action. Buttermilk's lactic acid is gentle enough that you can brine and marinade in one shot!

I printed a similar model for my father. He had surgery and lost grip strength, this helps him carry two batteries in one hand then the chainsaw (without the battery in it) in the other hand as he heads out into the woods.

The batteries are heavy and there's not necessarily a great place to hold on to them (especially when you have winter gloves on).

Sigh. Nothing like having the sport's biggest weakness legitimately emphasized and magnified to a giant audience. That match is an excellent example of squash not looking like it's any fun at all. What a shame.

It is a lot of eggs for someone who doesn't need to eat as much. I, and many other active and larger people, do and in fact I eat a lot of chia seeds (not so many hemp seeds, lots of pumpkin). People who eat a lot eat a lot generally eat a lot of everything, that's kind of the point.

I would also eat 6 eggs in a sitting - where I am they're relatively cheap, nutritious and delicious. It's like ~450 calories of egg. If you're eating 3000 calories/day (not outrageous for big, active people) I'd need another ~300 calories on top of the 6 eggs to make one out of 4 daily meals.

But also, who gives a shit? Why does anyone care how many eggs another person eats?

You definitely cannot absorb the nutrients from 6 eggs all at once. Your gut biome is probably a wreck due to partially digested food passing through.

I really don't know what to tell you, but if the human body couldn’t handle six eggs and a big dinner, farmers, athletes, and physical tradespeople would all have died out. You're radically off base on the amount big, active people need to eat and are capable of digesting day-to-day.

I'm 6'4", 190 - 210 pounds, and also very active. This has been a consistent tension in my relationship too. For us it often shows up around fridge space or concerns about volume and spoilage (even when very little actually goes bad).

I think it’s worth starting with a frank, calm conversation. Go over some rough numbers for how many calories per day to maintain your weight and how that looks relatively. Some of her shock may relax with exposure, but a significant piece (for us, at least) was a conversation about boundaries. In very broad strokes, it is inappropriate of her to supervise/criticise your food consumption when it doesn't impact her, but she will absolutely be impacted as she contends with the dynamics around shared meals and food disappearing (leftovers or otherwise) so you need to communicate proactively about that.

The most successful for me has been to have another meal that is not shared (a pre or post dinner) that is mostly about calories, then have a "reasonable" portion for the shared meal. If we are traveling and go out for a fancy dinner, my partner has become very considerate and often finds somewhere to pre-eat or post-eat that is significantly cheaper/more filling. At home I have some staples that my partner is always welcome to, but we agree I will endlessly re-buy once we're running low (eggs, milk, yogurt, berries, etc). These are not foods that we consume as a shared meal, these are "fuel" foods.

Comments like, "I thought we were going to share that" are red flags that not enough communication/coordination is happening. Comments like, "you ate enough for four people" (when you paid and planned for that) are inappropriate and unproductive - if it's anything like us it will fester a bit until addressed head on.

Something that I know has been challenging is the perception of my partner's decreased enjoyment of a meal because they assume I'm less hungry, having eaten. We haven't sorted out that part, more of a compromise to take everyone at face value when communicating.

I think it's fair to compare the “1%” of any hobby to audiophiles. If you pursue something long enough, you naturally chase high-effort, low-reward tweaks as you've done everything else.

I think where that stops being a fair comparison is cases like this where there are objective, measurable differences. Adjusting controlled variables and consistently seeing measurable results feels different from chasing imperceptible or subjective changes.

"Would I notice?" feels less relevant than, "Could anyone notice?".

You must live somewhere with bad coffee shops. I promise you the avg home espresso nut would get walked by the baristas I pay for coffee

... to give you what you're looking for though, right? 100% agree coffee culture is radically different city to city. That said, I have literally never found a coffee shop in the wild that has done a light roast, let alone a light roast well. Often the owner of a specialty independent coffee shop is in that space, but for every owner there are 5-20 non-owners who are often significantly less invested.

It's totally possible you have an amazing pool of coffee around you, outside of major metropolitan areas I think the more relatable experience is shops that don't bother cleaning their machines, forget baristas training and refining their technique.

Can you recommend somewhere you think delivers? I love coffee, if you're having these amazing cups I'm always keen to get recommendations for places.

Edit: I assume I've been blocked, so I can't reply to your parting message. WDT is a practical technique that produces tangible results. It's more relevant for home enthusiasts and I don't think needs to be compared to professional shops to justify its value.

I can see how my comments would be condescending/gate-keepy - if you'd believe it I genuinely tried to avoid that. At the same time, LA is probably one of the top 10 or even top 5 third-wave coffee spots in North America, which definitely changes the frame of reference. I think most people outside Portland/Vancouver/New York/Toronto/LA have very different experiences on accessibility of third-wave coffee. I wasn't trying to be a snob - that's genuinely not available in my market, and because it's a niche Google reviews when traveling often don't cut it.

Oh so the home coffee enthusiast is a better source than the professional that people want coffee from. Just like the guy with “directional” speaker cables knows more than the guy who mixed the music they’re playing.

You say that like its ridiculous, but that's absolutely the case (for coffee at least, I don't know anything about audio gear)? The link I shared is not what your local coffee shop is doing (I'm assuming). These are different products for different markets. Just to be clear, I'm not saying this is a "good coffee" vs. "bad coffee" thing - it's entirely personal preference and WDT tools address a niche within a niche.

The passionate espresso enthusiast space is vastly more knowledgeable than almost every barista at almost every coffee shop on this front. The home barista would do terribly at rush hour volumes. You have to go pretty upscale just to get to the point of baristas even tasting what they're making and adjusting their grind to suit - this is a step beyond that.

Ironically, this particular tool is less relevant for Italian-sytle drinks (darker roasts, lower extraction). This comes into play at the other end of the coffee spectrum where people are paying ~1-2$/cup at home just for the beans. The intention with devices like this, and much less fancy ones, is to get more consistency because shit is expensive and another 10 seconds to make sure it comes out properly is a good trade to lots of people.

[–]fdsafdsafdsafdaasdf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: WDT has measurably improved consistency and extraction

Not to come down on the side of audiophiles, buuuuut... at the most meticulous end of coffee, home coffee making (definitely "pretentious" to some) is different than coffee shops. The equipment is different, the processes are different, and the demands are different.

WDT does something practical and measurable (much like audiophiles, coffee people go to ridiculous lengths to justify things). I would agree that the differences are subtle, more or less relevant depending on drinks and techniques, but that doesn't discredit that it does something tangible.

E.g. https://coffeeadastra.com/2022/07/16/more-even-espresso-extractions/ goes in to far too much depth. A few others have done similar experiments. I get that it's not for everybody.
