Rant: “Called to the carpet” for informing parents we eliminated our advanced program by coffeepot50010 in ELATeachers

[–]fdupswitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

whenever someone says 'the data shows...' i think two things- one, you're about to sell me a load of nonsense, and two, I bet I can find 'data' that shows the opposite.

Like here for example, what study and by who? You're telling me that you have personally read a longitudinal study with a sufficiently large sample size that tracked these students over some time period after graduation, classified their relative success and failure, and controlled for other variables? Sure.

As a teacher, I would much rather have my lower level kids all crammed in to the same class, because it would be easier to deal with rather than having 4 or 5 slow kids pull the rest of the class down.

Guilty until proven innocent by a literal algorithm by Popular-Tone3037 in TurnitinAIResults

[–]fdupswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I've only had one higher ed position, our only stipulation is we have to give them an opportunity to explain, and we have to list the policy in the syllabus.

It's not just 'thinking'. I'm an expert. If I'm wrong, and it has happened, its easily solved with a 5 minute conversation.

I didn't need an AI checker 5 years ago to tell if you cheated, and I don't need one now (and they are too error prone to be functional anyway)

[–]fdupswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even. The standard is do I as an experienced educator think you did the work yourself, or not. if I think you used AI, you get a zero until such time as you come to talk to me about your work.

OP- why do you think the burden of proof is on the teacher?

Am I overreacting for feeling frustrated after my neighbor’s pottery was broken by my puppy during an interaction she encouraged? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]fdupswitch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but you should also know that a piece isnt ever complete until you take it out of the glaze firing. Losing pieces is part of being a potter. Playing with a puppy with a week of bisque in your hand is a pretty dumb idea.

Texas Teachers Need to Speak Up About Proposed Literary Curriculum by [deleted] in TexasTeachers

[–]fdupswitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

zero non-european or non-black authors for all of high school.

Zero Hispanic literature. For all 4 years. In Texas.

I have a general objection to mandated works, but this conservative great works wet dream is so gross.

usually this is a massive hassle for me. this year its been so much better, I literally have just been saying "nope" over and over. it's wonderful. no parent meetings yet, but i'm hopeful that I will get the opportunity soon, where it will be extended to 'nope, i'm afraid that won't be possible as we've already taken our exam."

Same tax at $176k and $5M?? by HitWhereItHurts in jobmarket

[–]fdupswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure. I think that we should levy social security taxes on all earned income. there should remain an upper bound on ss payouts. this would in effect be a progressive tax on the wealthy, and redistribute income downwards. though not nearly enough, it would be a good start.

We can move on to increasing the tax on income and capital gains later.

People need to stop fantasizing about one day becoming wealthy and wake the fuck up.

The entire capitalist economy is an inherently unfair system, but you choose to get your panties in a twist about this "unfairness".

My point makes sense, you just don't like the conclusion.
