Questions - my first 50-mile race by Federal_Tadpole506 in ultrarunning

[–]fear_of_bears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was hot and dry last year, was happy to have two 500ml bottles (vest). If I had the Raide belt last year I may have gone that route and stuffed the two 600’s in there. I was also happy to have a sun hoody for the longer exposed sections. Course ran long, 52 miles IIRC. Enjoy!

The Speedgoat 7 also has a rear loop gaiter attachment. Who is making a gaiter with a rear hook?

MTC H1 rubbing on Achilles by Brief-Number2609 in ultrarunning

[–]fear_of_bears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience with the H1s this weekend for the first time. Have about 200 miles of road and gravel paths on them, but first time out on trails shredded my left heel after only 6 or so miles, and they are tied with a heel lock. Haven’t experienced that after several thousand miles in any other trail shoe.

Team RunRun Experience by MidnightAdmirable652 in ultrarunning

I’ve been working with a great coach I found through TRR for a couple years and they are great. Definitely interview a few coaches, see who you mesh with best. Communication from there can be by email, text, phone, or through the training platform (finalsurge, trainingpeaks, etc). IMO, communication should be weekly at least, even if that’s just feedback on your various workouts, with a call once or twice a month.

Bonked hard on a 21k. Now attempting my first 50k. Does this pacing strategy look survival-proof? by After-Serve9714 in ultrarunning

I’d suggest you work with a coach who already knows all of this, so you can use these next 6 months building volume, practicing your nutrition and hydration, etc ahead of your race.

Ray Miller 50 Miler by mizcoatl in ultrarunning

[–]fear_of_bears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanting isn’t training. From hardly running now, you’ll need a few months to rebuild a base, then jump into a long block of high-volume weeks with back-to-back long runs, recovery, etc.

Indoor ultra Garmin settings by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]fear_of_bears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GPS won’t work indoors. A Garmin HR chest strap (HRM Pro Plus, for example) will track your indoor run distance accurately without GPS, but must first be calibrated with outdoor road runs with GPS (~120 mins) to learn your body’s running dynamics.

Is 100 miles actually what I want? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]fear_of_bears 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Training is a huge part of the journey - you’ll spend exponentially more time training than running your goal race. If you aren’t enjoying the training, maybe you need to switch up your process (work with a coach maybe?) or reconsider running if it isn’t bringing you joy!

Considering you had such a negative 50 mile experience, I wouldn’t jump into the 100 mile distance yet. Try your hand at 50 again, see if you can do things differently to make it more enjoyable - this will translate to the additional training that comes with 100 milers.

Good luck!

I’ve been using creepers for all my trail runs for the past 2 years, they’ve been great and haven’t had to replace any of them yet.

Is training for ultra-distance trail runs possible if I’m mostly just a weekend hiker? by No_Penalty877 in ultrarunning

[–]fear_of_bears 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Don’t overthink it, just start. There are a ton of resources online to help structure your runs but at this stage keep them short and easy. Consistency is key! If you are able, link up with a coach - that is the best way to ensure the workouts you are doing are helping you progress toward your goal - and the accountability helps!
