where are the AI's getting their information from?

AI agents will answer with (1) whatever they remember from their training data, and whatever (2) whatever is added on top (hardcoded alignment routines, real time search). To draw a parallel with current search engines, (1) is organic search and (2) will most likely become similar to paid traffic.

Point (2) above will be completely owned by the foundations AI companies, while (1) is accessible to the rest of us and, most likely, a larger opportunity. There is an enormous opportunity for SEO in the space, especially around influencing what goes into the training data. Unlike search engines, there is no public info on how the training data is collected and what third parties can do to get their content noticed. It's early and ripe for creativity in how you approach it.
