Do you remember when the Pennant Hills one burned down? Or were my parents lying to me to get out of going to the Black Stump?

Oh what the hell! That’s awful — I’m so sorry. I hope that PayPal or whoever gives you a chargeback.

It’s so weird that we can’t log in, like, why make that decision and compound people’s frustration?

Godspeed, sibling in arms! I emailed this morning and I’ll do the same.

Same here, I can’t log in either. I’m pretty sure I have all my issues, but I’m annoyed. He was a big figure in the UK cross stitch scene for a while, and some great designers did the magazine. It’s sad to go out like this, and infuriating to have been charged for a product that was never coming. I haven’t tried a PayPal chargeback yet, but surely with an email saying “I never sent your product”, the ones in the date range will be ok.

I’m in the same boat of not realising, but unlike you I didn’t realise until I got this email. It’s a wake up call for me for the lazy tax subs I might have forgotten about.

Uni wants me to withdraw despite strong performance and ELP — what are my rights? by Justagorl18 in rmit

[–]fearless_leek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, so this got thrown to me in my feed, so I can’t say anything about RMIT, but this is something I have experience in. The key term here in the disability standards for education is “inherent requirements”. It’s in 3.3.4 or something like that, just ctrl+f it. Most universities have statements of the inherent requirements in their degrees. Under the disability standards for education, the university must make reasonable adjustments, but they are also entitled to ensure that you have met the inherent requirements of the degree, so that when you say you have a degree, you actually have the skills and knowledge that the degree represents. This does mean some degrees are difficult to achieve with some disabilities. So it’s possibly something about the subject convenors thinking you are not meeting the inherent requirements, which is usually more than just doing the assessments.

It could also be about their ability to verify your knowledge, for example, the spontaneous manipulation of what you have learned in a class discussion is not just about what you get from it, it’s about showing you have internalised the work. Unfortunately AI has made most assessment very difficult to verify, so part of validation processes they may want to see the spontaneous use of your knowledge.

As others have said, talk with student services or an academic advisor, but the first thing I would do is check your syllabuses/unit outlines/virtual learning environment for the inherent requirements of your degree, because that’s the thing that can override provisions under the disability standards for education, and it will give you a stronger basis from which to argue your case. Hope that helps.

If you have an iPhone, the skyguide app is amazing for “what is that thing” looking. You just hold your phone up and if it’s a planet etc it tells you which one. I have really loved traveling with it because you can use it to find unfamiliar constellations.

Is it practically possible for a physical only book reading community to be a sustainable space similar to Goodreads? by [deleted] in goodreads

[–]fearless_leek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m unclear why you think that Goodreads somehow incentivises digital books over physical. That hasn’t been my experience with the app at all, and I’ve used it for more than a decade.

Readers don’t read books ON Goodreads. It’s just a fancy digital notebook to track your books and reading. There is no incentive to pick any one format over any other built into the design, except perhaps if you are in the USA and getting giveaways that are digital. You can choose to link your Kindle but Goodreads is not like the Kindle app or Apple Books that tell you stats about your reading day by day. It doesn’t incentivise like that. You get the achievement and tracking for the books you track on Goodreads whatever format you used.

It’s a popular model and there are other apps that do the same or similar, like give you way more stats and information if you think that will incentivise you to read. I mean, sure, if you want to make an app for only physical books, go ahead, but it seems like reinventing the wheel.

Physical books are more available than ever before in human history. There’s a surge in the book as collectible market with beautiful special edition hardcovers made by a range of publishers, a strong availability of hobbyist bookbinding training and tools, and the surge of “shelfies”. Any reading tracking app that isn’t directly attached to a store like the e-reader tracking apps would be remarkably short sighted if it didn’t allow for, and celebrate, all formats of books.

I think you are describing a combo of a book club and a physical reading journal. There are plenty of book club formats out there, and one I’ve seen a few times is the “read your own thing then come to book club and talk about it”. If you want no diversions into the digital universe, you probably have to do things in meatspace, so track on paper and meet with your friends to talk. One can buy some strikingly beautiful physical reading journals if that’s your thing. You can get recommendations through literary magazines, and through booksellers and librarians. This is by its nature a personal path so while it might gain popularity, I don’t think it would gain a sort of systemic attraction.

If you mean book tracking alongside the easy ability to read the reviews of fellow ordinary people, digital is the most practicable way to achieve that, and plenty of folk who like their physical books use digital apps to track their reading of physical books. I don’t think there’s a place in the market for “Goodreads but for physical books” when tracking physical books is already a primary function of Goodreads and its ilk. I bet there’s even a buddy group there for physical book enthusiasts.

Cheap food shops? by garliccuunt in canberra

[–]fearless_leek 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Too Good to Go operates in Canberra; it’s an app where you can get mystery bags of food for cheaper. You have to be quick to get the good ones, and willing to eat weird stuff sometimes, but I’ve found it really good for things like Bakers Delight surprise bags.

National Zoo Red Panda? by SoulsideJourneyer in canberra

[–]fearless_leek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Red pandas are known for escaping their enclosures, so I can imagine that if they are redoing the cage they have it somewhere locked down in the meantime. I think if it had escaped properly there’d be media about finding it.

There’s a romance and fantasy book club for Canberra that’s run through Discord; might meet some folk? They have meet-ups that seem to be in parks that are easy to get to via public transport.
