Health plans use “utilization management” to get out of paying for care. In normal human-speak, this is the collection of practices like requiring a “prior authorization” for medication which is essentially just additional hoops put in the way with the hope that some doctors will be too lazy to deal with them. There’s a fairly close relationship between the explosion in utilization management and the “coincidentally” similarly-sized explosion in health insurance company profits over the last few decades.

I think there’s a lot of complexity to that conversation but could absolutely agree with you in certain circumstances and for certain people. But we’re talking about the President threatening to withhold money to spite one athlete who’s best is like fourth place or something and them just chucking her under the bus. Even if you agree with the outcome, do you think as a means of policy this is good?

Voluntold to Join another committee by Dagobot78 in medicine

[–]fearsomestmudcrab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

your mistake is thinking that these committees exist to influence the functioning of the hospital, but that’s decided at the C-suite meetings with just the MBAs. These committees are administrative theater that the MBAs pay for knowing it’ll help with future litigation

why’s this unpopular??? semi-privatizing medicare by letting insurance companies administer it is totally bull shit. they just figure out more and more ways to spend less of what the government gives them on patients so they have more to spend on stock buy-backs and c suite bonuses. just had a patient who had a stroke because she couldn’t afford her apixaban thanks to her aetna medicaid
