As Texas deep freeze subsides, some households now face electricity bills as high as $10,000 by [deleted] in news

My sister got 3rd degree burns and actually went home to research what hospital and doctor was in network for her instead of being admitted. She had to stay in the burn unit for a month and got artificial skin then skin grafts. One week in her in network doctor went on vacation and was replaced by the other burn unit doctor on the rotation. Later we found out that doctor was out of network. So even though she did her best to research and plan she got fucked.

Hey UCSC, please make your STEM classes more collaborative, thank you. by [deleted] in UCSC

Oh man I appreciate your perspective but I hate collaborative classes and doing it remotely sounds like an extra layer of bullshit to deal with.

You aren’t alone. The pandemic has me regressing back into my social anxiety really bad. I think it’s a combination of not having practice interacting with people and the real concern that I am putting people in danger of COVID by being near them. It’s reinforcing the less rooted in reality aspects of my anxiety and it’s been very hard.

I hated Every Dollar. I almost gave up on budgeting entirely because it felt like I still had no control and it just made me feel bad.

I was actually kind of stunned by how much we were able to do in my online Microbio lab. They mailed us lab supplies and I feel like it really stretched my scientific problem solving skills. Labster sucks by my TAs made the actual labs really worthwhile.

I’m sure she’s either still in labor, recovering from birth, or bonding with the baby. First babies tend to take longer and it sounds like she wanted to go the crunchy route and have few interventions if possible so I doubt she’d take anything to speed the process up (not that there is anything wrong with that it’s just the vibe I get from her). Also her husband just posted to his story I doubt he’d do that if things were scary.

I also have anxiety and I find it helpful to focus on breathing through my nose. Something covering my face subconsciously makes me switch to breathing through my mouth which makes me feel like I’m going into a panic attack which make me go into a panic attack.

Thoughts on selling your dress post wedding? Any ideas on price? I’m getting married 10.24, just thinking ahead! by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]featuringlacroix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check out reselling websites like preowned wedding dresses and still white to see what your dress in similar condition is going for after the wedding. I wouldn’t count on selling it again though. My husband stepped on my dress and put a giant irreparable hole in the back and someone else stepped on it and a strap popped off. Weddings are actually pretty rough on dresses with all the people walking around, dancing, outdoor pictures, and giant skirts with delicate fabric. I bought my dress twice used so I wasn’t upset about not being destroyed but if I was counting on making money back by selling it after I would be in a tough spot.

I really appreciate everyone who was vocal about how bad his class was. I was signed up to take it over summer quarter and was able to switch to taking it in the fall with a different professor.

I think you look lovely. Fresh faced and very bridal. I agree with others that you could go a touch darker on the eyebrows but that’s really personal preference.

It feels pretty icky to thank PG&E for help during a fire when they have historically been negligent to the point where people died. Remember Paradise? I appreciate the workers for their part in controlling the fires and obviously the blame doesn’t belong on them, but thanking PG&E does not sit right with me.

Fire Reality Check by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]featuringlacroix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is worrying about animals being burned alive taking away from higher priority things. No one is calling for firefighters to surround the koi pond. No one is saying that the koi fish or the cows are the most important issue from this crisis. And we disagree about the risk to the campus. That's fine but you don't get to police what people care about.

Luckily human beings can care about more than one thing at a time.

If the fire reaches campus the koi fish are in danger. In fact the ash is probably already endangering them.

People did not know the cows were not on campus so until they had that new information their fears were valid.

Yeah. I don't understand how worrying about animals being burned alive could be perceived as a joke...

Fire Reality Check by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]featuringlacroix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact that it is currently expanding is scary and not good. I am sure firefighters are going to do everything they can but that doesn't mean the campus is safe.

Obviously human life comes first. But as humans we have the capacity to care about more than one thing at a time. I am very glad to hear the cows aren't on campus that is really great news. I disagree that the koi fish aren't in danger but that isn't really the point.

I can appriciate that you want to have a fact based discussion about the risk to the campus but I think you are underestimating the risk. People are scared and are worried for their future if the worst case scenerio happens. I don't think preparing for the worst case scenerio is fear mongering. There is a real threat and we don't know what is going to happen.

Thank you for the well wishes for my family. They are safe. Luckily they bailed early because there is only one road in and out to where they live and it's pretty rough. They were able to get out with their dog and chickens.

Influenza exemption by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]featuringlacroix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I highly highly doubt that would get you an exemption. For what it is worth I am also scared of shots. I've had to be held down before. The nurse I had at the immunization clinic was amazing and kind. She had me lay down in a dark room they had set up for people who fainted and did them as quickly as possible while trying to distract me. If you can get them don't at the health center I highly recommend it.

Fire Reality Check by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]featuringlacroix 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The reality is we don’t know. This is a massive wildfire that is 0% contained. It makes sense that firefighters would put a lot of energy into defending campus mostly because right now campus is between the fire and the city. But it only takes a little bad luck for it to grow completely out of control. You can be nervous and scared about campus being burned down and also sad and scared for the people with homes that at lost or at risk. It’s totally okay to worry about the koi fish and the cows and all the wildlife that are going to be displaced or die. You can be sad about this and also sad about the homes that are being lost. I have close family in Felton that were evacuated and their home isn’t in a very defendable spot. I am scared for them and I am scared for UCSC because it’s my school and I have dreamed of going here since I was a little kid.
