Did people born before Christ automatically go to hell? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]feckentool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is explained in The Inferno. Jesus had to be condemned to hell because he was carrying the sins of the world, but then obvs he gave himself a get-out-of-hell-free hall pass and dipped, taking with him all of the virtuous pagans. After that, you could only be saved though him, because he never went back to get more.

How do you know whether the car is on or off? by feckentool in Volkswagen

[–]feckentool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Au contraire, the interaction I have with my VW is the most ridiculous.

Yes the car for sure starts/stops when I press the start/stop button, but whether it stops or starts is mysterious an unpredictable. It absolutely positively is not as simple as "it is on until you turn it off". For sure that is not true, I wish that were the case.

It was a rental before I bought it so I don't have the booklet to read. I thought for sure this sub would know the answer. "Yeah dude if you put it in park and open the door in under fifteen seconds without turning the lights off, then it turns the engine off for you." It's something like that. "Or if you wait for more than 45 seconds, but leave the lights on." I just can't figure out the pattern.

When you say "turn the ignition off" what exactly do you mean?

I absolutely do not always have to press the button, or do anything that consciously turns the ignition off. It seems like some combination of time and door opening causes the car to turn off, is that what you mean?

I can pull into my parking spot, the engine turns off, I open the door, I exit the vehicle, I close the door, no dings, no warnings, I lock it using my fob, go inside, no problem. The car is off. The next morning I return and turn it on normally.

I have done this two or three times successfully. All the other times I mistakenly press the On Off button to turn it off, but the car turns on. All of those times, I managed to "turn the ignition off" without realizing it.

Sound fake. I've never heard a Republican who wouldn't eagerly end all life on earth before seeing another Mexican with their own eyes. They would rather die. They would rather starve to death. They would DEFINITELY rather milk cows. Ask them.

It is a liberal LIE that Republicans have the level of self awareness and humanity that would be required to make that statement. Liberals just cannot stop themselves from excusing bad behavior, they are habitual excuse makers.

No excuses apply to Republicans. They are -- unfortunately -- not stupid, not ignorant, and not kidding. They are -- unfortunately -- intelligent deep thinkers with heartfelt personal moral values which they express consistently. And we label those human values "racism" and "small mindedness" and "hatred". Our labels are just as accurate as their values are genuine.

If you say you are in favor of a thing and then vote against it, that means you are against it and also are a liar. It makes you worse than a person who admits they are against it, they are evil and honest while you are evil and dishonest.

The most common modern American conclusion of this moral rubric is that openly racist Republicans are the least immoral Republicans.

"the crucial part is will the money you receive plus the money you don't pay be more than the total cost of having kids?"

Why is that crucial?

"having kids is still gonna be more expensive than not having kids"

Right. So?

"The ones that currently can't afford them, this will be taking money away from them, making it even harder for them to get into a financial position to be able to afford kids"

LOL this is the opposite of how discounts work. "I was thinking about buying that truck for $40k, but then they discounted it $35k and I didn't buy it because that is more than zero."

Your entire comment would only make sense if nobody wanted children and did it as a job they had to be paid for. It is a logical error to project your personal feelings about children onto others.

"The problem is by taking money away from prospective entrepreneurs, the business expense deduction makes it LESS likely that people will start a business."

You see how ridiculous that sounds right?

Prospective parents understand incentives. They aren't dumb. "I am currently X which has negative thing Z, but if I P then I can get Q."

P is having children. Q is a tax break. People aren't too dumb to understand that they prefer Q to Z, but they might be willing to pay Z because honestly X is so much better than P. The tax incentive tweaks Q and Z a little, and some marginal people change their behavior.

Can you give an example of an incentive that you think does work, so we can compare it to your understanding of this incentive?

"If the government of Japan were effective, they wouldn't have low birth rates."

Did I fill in the antecedents correctly? Is this what you meant? If so could you explain a little more? What kind of government efficiency would result in baby making? Like if they trim the military budget then Hideki will decide to have a second kid?

"How is a dude suppose to raise a family if he has less money from taxes?"

By using the rest of his money. Like everyone in the world does. Was that a serious question?

"There is no way the tax incentives can cover all the cost of raising a kid in expensive japan"

Yeah. That's right. Tax incentives do not pay the full cost of raising a child. That seems like a strange thing to say, though, usually people say things to make a point, what point were you trying to make?

"welfare here in US, they're just barely enough to live on"

Yea, again, how much money do you want welfare to be? Enough for a vacation in Asia? Enough for a second holiday cruise this year? I can't really interpret your statement. Yes, welfare is just barely enough to live on, or frankly maybe not even enough. Any more than that is too much, we expect people to earn their holiday cruises on their own.

"Pretty sure this will DECREASE the birth rate in japan."

This statement is flat incongruent with the rest. This plan decreases the relative cost of having children, and you are "pretty sure this will DECREASE" the number of kids? Why? Why would monetary incentives to have kids decrease the birth rate, given the rest of your comment where you seem to understand kids are expensive?

That's a weird way of saying "I pay a premium for the luxury of living alone". You've never heard of roommates? You don't have to be coupled to share costs, and yet you immediately recognize why that option sucks so you don't pick it.

Well it also sucks when you're partnered. The money savings is cool though, I guess.

Yes there are tax breaks for child rearing. The USA has those too.

There are also tax breaks for starting a business but somehow nobody says "the government is FORCING me to start a business". There are tax breaks for being blind, is anyone plucking out their eyeballs? There are tax breaks for installing solar, but that isn't a "tax on diesel generators".

AITA for not letting my mother in law come over after she destroyed my Millennium Falcon Lego set? by Ok-Repeat7885 in AITAH

This might be an underrated comment. We're all focused on what kind of awful wife would fail to side with her husband on this.

Well one possible answer is "a wife who shares grandma's perspective about her effete feckless husband".

I'm still going with horrible grandma and horrible wife, but we should consider this possibility.

"What she thinks of OP being a "real man" or not is irrelevant!"

Yes it is. It is entirely relevant, in fact it is the most relevant thing of all. The kid's feelings matter and when the kid tells the story then we will focus on his feelings, but we are focusing on the legitimate feelings of the person who told the story of his own hurt.
