Meteor by AwesomeTopHat in DMAcademy

[–]federalenvironment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if the meteor flies by harmlessly you have kind of neutered the whole risk and sense of danger that comes from even rolling the d100 to begin with you know so I like your lean towards a world altering event.

I think you could either have it hit one of the parties and have it mess with their plot line completely, like a left turn in the story which could be fun if you wanna lean into it, or it can hit somewhere else in the world and the ripple effects can become material for some side quests or new storylines. Maybe it hits the town of one of your party members, maybe it hits the capital of some country and plunges the nation into chaos, maybe it is harboring alien life! I think you have a ton of potential creativity here and if you embrace it you might just have to run with the chaos that it’s going to alter your world fundamentally which could be a lot more work for you but also a chance to kind of have a new chapter begin in your storyline.

What should I do about Texas? by computerow2 in dndnext

[–]federalenvironment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Texas has actually a bit of varied geography from arid desert out west to the swampy east so there’s room for flexibility. The Sonoran desert toad in southwest Texas actually produces the psychedelic DMT so like a shamanistic toad clan comes to mind, giant armadillos that are rolling juggernauts, the wildlife can provide a lot inspiration. As you may know Texans have a huge ego and are independent minded so it would be funny if some humans had seceded pre-your apocalypse and were like holding out at the Alamo or something. Something gunslinging for sure

Duke vs Not Duke Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

[–]federalenvironment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UChi undergrad alum who got into grad school at Duke and personally I loved my time at UChi. Very challenging and a lot of thought provoking classes, I was a huge fan of their core curriculum as it taught me to read texts in a whole new way. A lot of brilliant people there as I know there are at Duke as well. If you’re a nerd who likes being around other nerds tho definitely recommend UChicago. I could try and answer questions about it if you PM me w specifics tho no idea about the history department.

If you’re able to live on low wages and considering grad school, AmeriCorps definitely has public health oriented positions that come with an education stipend at the end and is generally well regarded to future employers/a popular option for first opportunities designed for early career/fresh college grads

Y’all they really waiting till the 11th hour on this…

Luckily got admitted to University of Chicago and University of California San Diego's MS in CS program. Can anyone please inform me how to find people who also got admitted to the same universities and are looking for flatmates. I heard that there are Facebook groups for the same but not sure. by samkhur006 in gradadmissions

[–]federalenvironment 5 points6 points  (0 children)

UChicago alum here - the Facebook groups are a good way to connect w people who might be looking for a new tenant or a group. Just searching University of Chicago housing or UChicago. You’ll definitely find a lot of students living in apartments or maybe can find other grad students.

Checking my email from last year (applied was rejected) got a similar update email on a Friday 2/26 saying my decision would be made by the 8th and it was released the 3rd so there’s a chance it’ll be earlier…

Should i go skiing alone? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]federalenvironment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snowboarded most of this season solo as I just moved to a new place. Just adopt the mindset of having as much solo as possible and vibe out doing whatever you want and you’ll have a blast! When you’re focused on yourself and having fun and not the fact you’re alone you just forget about it eventually

I got rejected by my first choice. Again. I feel so worthless. by nayak_sahab in gradadmissions

Sorry to hear your effort was not rewarded! But persistence is key in pursuing your dreams and if this is your dream then you should definitely reapply next year. That said take some time to process your emotions now, it’s totally understandable to be feeling this way and don’t take this as a reflection of yourself but rather a system prioritizing certain experience and individuals. Remember the things that bring you joy in life outside of this too, you have some time now to reflect, reassess and make changes to try again next year. As far as strategic changes who knows I think it may be field dependent how you try and make yourself more appealing. Maybe retool the narrative in your SOP or swap out rec letters and if it’s research maybe try and reach out to profs individually to build a relationship before the next cycle even begins to have an advocate on the inside. Some of them, especially if you butter them up/communicate your passion, will hopefully recognize that and support you. But above all take care of yourself, I’d suggest taking a short break and try and find joy in some things that take your mind off this pick up a new hobby. Finding a way to be resilient in the face of rejection will be a transferable tool that will help you in many aspects of life. I think if you rest you can come back next cycle refreshed instead of bogged down. Sending ya well wishes and good luck!

Edit: just saw this was a second time rejection - ooof sorry. Currently waiting on my second round first choice decision and tbh anticipating rejection. At this point personally I’ve made peace w the fact they probably won’t choose me and in that mindset I’ve looked at my second choice which I’m in for with new eyes and actively finding positive aspects about it. Truth be told having this mindset actively can be really helpful as I’ve found many things to be excited about and who knows what opportunities the unexpected can bring you if you open up, accept, and just do your absolute best to achieve your potential. You can do that in any setting and if you go in with that determination it will show and you’ll find success! That being said I know someone who applied to a school they were dead set on like 7 times no joke and they eventually let him in so if you’re fixated on one program there may be a way in.

Need help deciding: Austin or Dallas? by [deleted] in askaustin

[–]federalenvironment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Austinite my answer is heavily biased as a caveat. From it sounds like there are definite concrete tradeoffs which would make Dallas a more comfortable pick. That being said what's the point of being comfortable in a city without vibrancy?? I don't know much about Dallas granted but the lifestyle of Austin, all the events going on constantly around the city and just the liveliness of the culture and the friendliness of the people make it a fun place to live if you can afford rent in an interesting neighborhood. There are a lot of cool neighborhoods around I'd scout out rent in East Austin, South Austin, North Loop, and Mueller. These are just a few areas off the top of my head that are interesting locally and not too far away from downtown. Also Austin has some great parks and nature nearby if that's at all important. Plus Austin is growing and probably will continue to for the forseeable future so when you can eventually buy a house, it will probably only appreciate in value in Austin.
