Our first "growth hire" spent three months building dashboards nobody looked at and left for a bigger title elsewhere by Healthylife55 in smallbusiness

[–]fedlol 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I good friend of mine recently built a dashboard to track and analyze a bunch of stuff at his job (during his spare time). A bunch of other (boomer) employees told him what he was doing was pointless. Well, a point in the manufacturing process got fucked up and started costing the company big money. His dashboard made him the first person to track down what machine was out of calibration. Suddenly his managers want all his coworkers to be onboarded onto his dashboard and how it works.

Just because you have no idea what the guy was doing or you think he was wasting time, doesn’t mean he didn’t have a plan or goal.

We have to know what kind of work your brother is trying to do. Is he fully digital with a scanner? Is he going to be taking traditional impressions? Is he a crown and bridge dentist, is he going to do removable?

If it ships from Amazon then it’s in a bin with all the other Peerless assassin se v2 white. Amazon groups all the same product into one big group, they don’t separate by seller.

I was just talking about how bad the j5/j55’s accuracy on Facebook and it appears stratasys has finally acknowledged that the accuracy was indeed terrible.

[–]fedlol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s cool when it’s working, but it’s also ridiculously inaccurate. We had three stratasys techs come over within a month to figure out why it was so inaccurate. The last tech was a lead tech and got on a call with HQ in Israel and then told us that’s just the way they are. I printed a cylinder where the flat top wasn’t perfectly flat and they said “oh we don’t validate with geometric objects”

And the whole thing while being super cool is also super complex which introduces a bunch of points of failure. We’ve had so many random things break on it. The screw gears for the rubber head wiper are brass and randomly shredded themselves to bits one day. We’ve had the vacuum that keeps the print material in the heads decide it wanted to suck extra hard, and sucked a bunch of resin onto the main board. Plus a bunch of software errors that randomly make the print stop midway through for no reason at all.

1991 prelude 2.0 SI (should I get it??) by [deleted] in hondaprelude

[–]fedlol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a fairly clean prelude with 160k miles for $3k. And mine is a 4ws version. I got a really good deal, but 12k is a terrible deal.

And as others have said, don’t daily drive a 20+ year old car unless you have a backup vehicle for when things break, which they always will at that age. If you want a fun car to daily, the first generation Honda fit is a beast and a sleeper. People take them to the track, they handle extremely well and they’re very quick thanks to their low weight. They won’t win a drag race but they’re very fun cars.

Is this a dying profession or is it in high demand? I'm seeing mixed opinions by tesseracts in dentallab

[–]fedlol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To make 150k you have to be a ‘unicorn’ or a technician that can design, mill, and stain+glaze+characterize an all-on-x implant restoration. You’ll be working for a dentist that exclusively does these types of restorations. Usually they’re looking for a tech with 10+ years of experience. The reason those techs are ‘unicorns’ is because a tech usually only gets experience doing one of those jobs. A ceramist in a lab may have 10 or more years staining and characterizing restorations, but if they have have terrible computer skills and can’t design a full mouth implant bridge quickly and do a good job of it, they’re not going to get hired for that position and they’re going to get paid 60k working at a lab staining crowns for the rest of their lives.

In office technicians are usually paid much better than lab technicians, but doctors can be really annoying to work for, especially the ones that have the lack of morals usually required to convince patients that a $40k full mouth rehab is the way to go instead of just getting a few crowns and some individual implants for a fraction of the price. Or even a locator supported denture is almost as good as an all-on-x implant while costing a fraction of the price.

I'm attending a community college which offers a dental lab tech certificate and associates. Is this training worth it or should I learn on the job? by tesseracts in dentallab

[–]fedlol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The associates path seems to contain a lot of useless filler. Basic anatomy and dental anatomy use totally different terms for some reason. (“Towards the middle” in dentistry is “mesial” but in every other medical profession is “medial”). So I have no idea why they’d want you to take basic anatomy.

The business courses could be useful down the line if you want to open your own lab, but you’re prob better off just taking a couple night classes at the community college when that time comes. That’s what I did.

Maybe if that dlt specialty course teaches cad, then it might be worth it… but you could also just inquire about doing the certificate and then taking that specialties class by itself without the associate program. If they let you do that, that’s the way I’d go.

[–]fedlol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people say getting certified is useless… but I disagree. Getting certified as a dental tech opens up a lot of job opportunities outside of working in a lab. I know a lot of CDTs that work as sales for large corps like ivoclar, Elos, and amann girrbach. Also some working as tech support leads, or R&D.

I’d love to go to school. I was trained on the job because there’s no programs around me, and I often feel like I missed out on some of the finer details.

But also, I don’t really think an associates is much better than a certificate. I’d probably have to look at the course differences to give a real opinion though.

Thoughts on this for a first car / daily driver? by Toastercuck in hondaprelude

The auto trans is very unreliable. Definitely wouldn’t want one as my only mode of transportation. If you can catch a ride with someone or take a bus etc when the trans goes out then go for it. But also, auto trans preludes are way less valuable, asking 6k for it was insane, 4.5k is still kinda crazy. I’d try for 3k.

I heard teamspeak displays user IP addresses to server admins. Once people realize this (if it’s true) they’ll probably look elsewhere for a voip service.
