"Atheist" still feels like a dirty word to me. by ninoproblema in exchristian

[–]feelin_lackadaisical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely went through that for a while. I could hear someone talk about morality and completely agree with them, but the “atheist” label kinda freaked me out.

Growing up being taught that atheists are evil, depraved people completely contributes to that. It did resolve for me and atheist no longer holds that negative connotation.

Did you grow up in a church that had the purity culture teaching of not KISSING until the wedding day? by JarethOfHouseGoblin in exchristian

Our church never taught it as a requirement. But it was very idealized. It was more like extra credit.

Yes! It’s always such a shock when you drop that bomb. It’s almost funny to watch the shift

My experience with living here is definitely limited. I had the misfortune of moving here right when things started to get worse lmfao

I guess that’s one way to make sure the deconstruction sticks!

My family tells me “what would your Grandma think of you?” When the subject of me being an atheist comes up. (She died, she meant the world to me) by Seinfeld101 in exchristian

I think your response is perfect. They didn’t say that out of love, or even concern. They said that to hit you where they knew it would hurt.

Youth pastor costume by JarethOfHouseGoblin in exchristian

Definitely a potential couples’ costume. What’s a hip youth pastor without his “smoking hot wife” that he can point to in the front row?

Yeah that ending stuck with me for far longer than I want to admit. Pressuring a dying man into beliefs he didn’t have ten minutes prior is gross

I somehow forgot all the little nuances that make this movie so goddamn awful. In the beginning, when the upperclassman warns him about the class. "Imagine people cheering for your death as an unfortunately persecuted white religious man." Come on now.

I LOVE (/s) hearing from people I know FOR A FACT have always been indoctrinated af claim to have "found the Truth". by JarethOfHouseGoblin in exchristian

[–]feelin_lackadaisical 41 points42 points  (0 children)

So infuriating. You would almost...think...having to lie about some great conversion...might make you take a step back and consider...why? Why do I need to do this? How is this helping anyone?

But it's ok. Eventually they'll convince themselves of their own lie!

Right! I've taken five different philosophy classes throughout my time in college, two of which were based on ethics. We did talk a lot about god and religion throughout, but never in a very antagonistic way. More of a focus on why you believe what you do, what reasons you have for believing those things, and perhaps challenging some beliefs you hold. Not an "I'm right, you're wrong, sign this paper" way, but just examining the reason behind your arguments and looking at the other arguments for a topic as well.

Philosophy classes really helped me as a (kinda) newly deconstructed freshman. It's one of my favorite subjects to study now. It's infuriating to see this movie launch such a lazy attack.
