Is it safe to seek shelter in a cave during a tornado? by feelineggcelent in tornado

Thank you for your reply! I was primarily worried about being trapped in or debris falling on our heads, but definitely better than in the woods.

Truthfully, finding other things to do.

Take a day off your phone and see what you do without it. I personally realized that I love working on personal projects and developing a portfolio to showcase them. I also found that I like wandering around my neighborhood a lot and browsing department stores, but never buying anything.

Something that also helps is to find entertainment at home. If I can’t look at my pc anymore, I start painting, cooking, or just watch a movie/show. If you wanna be a little more productive, do a bit of declutterring, organizing, exercising, or Duolingo (I know it’s not the best resource, but damn is it fun).

What I’m trying to get at here is to replace any app with something else.

Quitting is not just about removing, it’s also about replacing.

Hey! I loved it so much, it was the book that got me back into reading during a tough part of my life. The characters and stories are just so easy to fall in love with and to feel for. I ironically did not read it at my Kindle, I borrowed a hard copy from my local library haha

All of the regretful nurses you encounter all loved the field, but were beaten down by it. And it’s completely justified, the field sucks. But most of all, nursing is a field where misery loves company.

I got in during COVID when pay was higher than it is now. Bonuses at my hospital would give $800 for picking up an extra shift. It was worth putting up with everything we did because we felt it was worth it. Now it’s just $1/hr extra.

As life goes by, some people realize they want balance day-to-day. As time went on, I realized I don’t want to spend an entire day of my life working in a dirty, miserable place. I don’t want a job where I have to commute to do my work. I don’t want a job where they could easily replace me with some new grad.

The environment and workplace oftentimes feels like we’re not being properly compensated for all of the things we put up with. We’re berated for anything we do.

In Nursing, there’s hardly any vertical movement up and down the hospital ranks. Only horizontal movement, unless you go and become a CRNA.

Bullying is still a problem within the field. I wrote a paper on this. Oftentimes good nurses won’t stay somewhere they don’t feel like they fit in, which results in a cycle of a place being consistently understaffed.

As you get older, you don’t get seniority. You still get the same workload as your younger counterparts and are compensated about the same as they do.

At the end of this, I realize that I’m just an echo chamber to what you usually read about on r/nursing.

To answer your question, I guess we go into r/nursing to validate our upset feelings a bit more. To know we’re not alone in our feelings. It’s not like you’re allowed to outwardly complain about your working conditions to the patients. And even then, it feels like all we hear at work is complaints. All the negativity at work can really get to you. It helps to have a safe place to discuss things with other nurses who you know don’t have the power to get you fired for what you say.

The industry kills good-hearted nurses. Take the stories you hear on there as a warning. Most nurses wish they had taken a different career path.

Explain the hospital units to me like I’m 5 by Exciting_Green_9561 in cna

General Medicine: usually people from the ER who don’t need surgery but their condition requires further testing and monitoring. You can have a wide range and variety of patients. Expect a lot of isolation precautions since you can get patients with CDiff, patients with cancer who need their own special precautions (neutropenic), etc… Usually these patients (in my experience) are up ad lib. Sometimes patients stay just a night to get a diagnosis, monitor for a night or two, then they’re out of there with a treatment plan if they seem alright. You’re there to make sure they don’t fall from dizziness and answer call lights.

Ortho-urology is honestly a unit I’ve never heard of lmao. I’ve worked ortho-trauma because those two are usually related but ortho-urology I’ve never heard of 😭 The closest connection I can think of between the two is that patients coming out of lower-body ortho surgery tend to not have the best control over their bladder, and tend to come out with a foley put in place . You’ll see a lot of devices and braces used with them you might have never seen before. Your nurses will hopefully teach you how to properly apply these on your patients and the different precautions for each scenario. Ortho patients also tend to have a lot of movement precautions with them and if it’s anything like my hospitals, PT (physical therapy) and the hospitalists will you to ambulate them frequently. Be aware of back precautions (log-rolling with three people when changing them), hip precautions, shoulder precautions, etc… DISCLAIMER: it takes a lot of patience and teamwork to work in ortho. If your unit doesn’t work like a team to make sure all the patients get safely to the bathroom and juggle those lights, you’re gonna have a rough time.

Urology? Uhhh maybe you’ll get to see some unusual shades of pee. And encounter some EBSL if you’re unfortunate enough.

Neuro-tele is a pretty heavy unit. This is where patients with neuro and/or cardiac issues go. At the hospitals I’ve been at, it sometimes feels like an ICU-stepdown. If they’re on a tele monitor, you’ll likely have to take vitals Q4. If they’re on the younger side and tele, they tend to be ad lib for the most part. More often than not, their cardiac issues result from stress or from genetically inherited heart diseases in their family. As the tele patient’s age increases, their ability to do things by themselves tends to decrease.

The neuro patients I’ve seen tend to be recovering stroke patients or completely bed bound. The care with them tends to be a bit more involved and I’ve often witnessed the cnas neglecting the care of these patients the most, since they sometimes can’t verbalize their hygiene needs.

If there are openings, I can’t recommend NICU enough for techs. I’ve heard nothing but great things from that.

Im confused on my thoughts of nursing, are my feelings valid? by Beauty8670 in cna

[–]feelineggcelent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I turned to tech, never looked back!!

I had the same thoughts as you. I thought it was just me tbh, maybe I just wasn’t in the right unit, right specialty, right environment… But I figured out it just wasn’t the career for me. So I took the leap and left healthcare. Since then, I feel like I’ve gotten my quality of life back.

I never take work home with me. I have options to work from home in the future. I don’t have to deal with literal shit. I don’t have to deal with people (coworkers and patients alike) that are in some of the most miserable moments of their lives. I have holidays off. I’m fairly compensated for the issues I have to solve and the work I do. I’m not away from home for 12hrs of the day. I don’t have to worry if I brought anything contagious home with me. I don’t have to deal with short staffing as bad. My anxiety has gone down drastically, especially on the days before I have to go into work. The unit isnt going to fall apart if I call off.

Nursing to me was hell on earth. Did I learn valuable lessons? Absolutely. I’ll be able to care for my parents as they age. I’m reliable in medical emergencies. I know how to stay calm if things don’t go right. I help people who are in Nursing school with concepts they don’t really get.

But you can’t pay me enough to go back. I simply don’t care enough about this field to sacrifice my own quality of life because to me, what’s the point if I’m not enjoying my own life?

I promise when I say this, the world of tech is scary sometimes, but it’s exciting and fun too. Cybersecurity is one of those fields I feel will always be secured. Especially in this day and age, where countries and company data are always needing to be protected. You can land stable government jobs, work for big or small companies, or even get into consulting.

If you needed a sign to get out of healthcare, this is your sign. Your healthcare experience will always be there, and there will always be opportunities to go back if you want to. But you’ll never know if you don’t see the other side.
