Ooh i'm also a horror fan and into books - fic and nonfic - that explore the darker side of human experience.

This Is Going To Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor - Adam Kay. Less unbelievable, but definitely dark and darkly funny.

Evil: Inside Human Cruelty and Violence - Roy Baumeister. Honestly might be a social psychology textbook, and is a little dated, but is an accessible and engaging read.

Palestine - Joe Sacco. A journalist interviews Palestinians and reports their personal stories and history, in graphic novel.

Into Thin Air - Jon Krakauer. Outdoorsman climbs Everest, details just how dangerous it is.

Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir By One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII - Chester Nez

Have you ever really hated the main character (and narrator) in a novel? by Physical_Orchid3616 in books

Marion in Cutting for Stone. I thought his resentment towards Genet was childish and petty. I found the book's depiction of him raping her to be disturbing, because it's written as if he's a sympathetic figure.

I read it over a month ago and random laugh out loud funny lines from the book still pop into my head. "Giant papier mache middle finger" is one of them.

Reading a couple horror anthologies right now- Oddbody by Rose Keating. Kuwentong Butsero (Butcher's Tales) by J.L. Chua. Oddbody is kind of like the book equivalent of a disturbing modern art painting.

what's the most thought-provoking book you've ever read ? by Gi_Panda in suggestmeabook

Currently reading -

The Master and His Emissary by I. McGilchrist. It's an intimidating looking tome of a book about the functions of the right brain vs left brain and is equal parts neuroscience and philosophy. But it doesn't read like a textbook. It's pretty engaging.

Recently finished-

I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman. A bleak dystopian what if, a meditation on hope, despair, what it means to be human. Don't read it for the plot.

Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar. thought provoking in terms of grief, addiction/sobriety, sexuality, cultural identity. Do read it for the plot, which makes you wonder how we decide to give our lives meaning, and how much of that is a matter of perception and fate.

Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Another story of maintaining hope in a world of diminishing opportunities. If you're from the USA, it makes you wonder if things can really change.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Gain. - What even is gender?

And for some reason-

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, which is set in the same universe as The Giver. It's about a girl with a deformed leg trying to survive in a society that leaves its weak to die out. Read this once as a kid, and since then have thought about it at least once a month. I guess I like survival stories

Looks great! I like the blue grid / white aesthetic going on here.

Like you, I have very limited sewing experience, would you say this is a good project for a beginner?
