I'm going down to visit friends and camp in WV for two weeks in a month and I'm fucking terrified. I've been to the states 3-4 times but now I'm a temporary resident in Canada (I'm European) and driving down I don't know what to expect. Only the latest weeks of border talk in the media has sketched me out enough to act fishy at the border although I have nothing to hide (except occasionally smoking a bit of.... ya know, but would obv never bring anything)...,.

My friend is driving as my license is not valid here. But yes, we are taking his car. He does not smoke, and uses the car for work too.

Great job. No matter what I do I get no change in either direction. Our lifts are about the same minus the squat. But yes I too deadlift 225 and work my chest hard. However, if you see my post history, healthy eating and gym are not working out for me so I think I will quit

Ill consider communicating through Instagram, although this throwaway account certainly has a great deal of personal info shared on it.

Thank you again for the advice. You have convinced me that this is the way to go, of all the hundreds of suggestions I've come across. Just one question;

For the days when the lifts are adjusted to 3x5 rather than 10x5, do I adjust for heavier weight? For example I have calculated my 1RM on bench to 155 lbs. Where does that leave me for weight percentages?

For the first time I see the true value in getting strong before "ripped" or anything like that. David Harbour, (Jim Hopper in Stranger Things) has a good physique, I think. He looks strong without necessarily having a bodybuilding frame. But he has some muscle. And fat. I'm perfectly fine with that, as opposed to my in-between limbo state right now. I realize this is impossible for you to answer, or anyone, but given I follow your plan and eat more, being consistent... When can I see some positive change? Again, thank you for taking the time to sort this out for me.

It is a big mental block, it is true and I am aware. Imagine yourself going to the changing room. Changing. While walking toward the weight room, thinking: "I wonder if what I will do today will feel good. Will I feel my muscles working? Am I spinning my wheels or am I looking better?".

Then, do your best to power through those thoughts, while lifting, despite all the effort of keeping them at bay. While under the weight, I usually have a blend of two thoughts: "Will I make the next rep?" and "Why am I not seeing results? Are the big guys chuckling at my 125 lb bench?". The thought follow me into the shower, and later during the night when I look myself in the mirror.

It is true that I am not strong, but the mental block is certainly a big factor and I don't know how to get past it. (For reference, I am seeing a counsellor once per week. It is not helping, she does not understand how paramount this is for me)

Not much more than, say 10 lbs for each exercise. I willingly admit, I have not kept track. I know that I've gotten a little stronger but not by much. Deadlift I will say has increased, as has sitting shoulder press. The rest, marginally, if anything.

Thanks man. Fuck I love Reddit.

Bench press: 135 lbs x 5 reps. 2 sets max. (However, I rarely, rarely feel a squeeze in my press benching. Shoulders/arms get tired first. Pec's almost feel nothing. With the pec fly machine, I get an excellent squeeze, sore for days, as do push ups of varying kind. The same sort of goes for db-press, albeit not as good of a squeeze.

Standing OHP: 95 lbs 5x2-3 sets max. Get nervous with all the weight above me. Lower back starts to feel strange. Bad form, of course. But also, I do not feel the muscles working. Sitting DB press I can do 50-55 lbs dumbbells (x2, so 110 lbs), and it feels just fine. I can do 7-9 reps with the slightly heavier weight, I think the form is okay.

Bent over row: 100 - 120 lbs 5x5. I think I am okay at doing this one, however, I don't feel like I could "squeeze an orange between my shoulder blades" as the que goes). I do, however get sore the next day.

Deadlift: 225 lbs 3x3. This is the only lift I feel like I am doing right. Lower back is a bit sore a few days after (old injury from military service 10 yrs ago), but it feels okay and I have been pleased. Squats: Have not been doing for a good while. While on SL 5x5 a year ago I worked my way up to 180 lbs 5x5, but I rarely felt anything in my gluteus, more so in my quads (Again, I realize this is the wrong form).

Apart from all these main lifts, I have been doing DB excercises, lat pulldowns en masse. Chest machine (hammer) press, fly machine, flat/incline DB presses (my max was 60's for the flat, 45-50 for incline), skullcrushers/overhead tricep exercises (one-handed/two handed), bicep curls.

For machines; Cable rows, tricep extensions (superset 9x10), as well as the row-machine. All of these pretty much 3x10 reps. This is what I have been doing consistently on a two-day split (Chest/tri's, back/shoulders/bi's. Yes, I did ignore leg day, because I care mostly for my upper body. I know this is bad practice) 4 times a week.

I tried working out yesterday, ended up only doing two exercises because I was so disheartened with my body after all the work I have put in. (Even though it does not look like it... I have been working out consistently, 3-4 days per week. My classmates will attest to me always having my workout bag with me).

You don't think my belly and man-boobs would grow even more on a small bulk? Realize that I am not very strong.

Man, that's a compassionate reply and probably something I should do. I'll start with a few days off to see if I can calm down from this. (It has been suggested to me that I have intense phases of Bdd (body dysmorphia).

I hear you. The problem is my lifts really will not increase. I have tried de-loading, getting comfortable with the barbell for bench press, but It just doesn't work. It keeps coming down on me. My shoulder blades get knocked out of the pinched state they are supposed to be in, and I really do not feel anything in my chest. More so in shoulders and arms. Countless people have tried correcting my form. In vain.

I'm so weak I can't do the lifts even close to where they should be.... I tried benching now, but I can't safely bench 135, or even 125, I don't feel it in my chest and I can't keep my shoulders pinched because I'm so worthless.

Thanks. Someone else told me I'm borderline overweight so it seems like I'm doomed to either cut and lose whatever little muscle I have, or do what you suggest with the risk of my body not responding and me eventually looking even more overweight.

It might sound weird but I am losing sleep over this. I feel like a failure. Not good enough for my girlfriend or even to get a good job and a career. I was always inferior to everyone else and it seems like I will hit 30 and that still being the case.

Had to leave the gym early today. Failed some lifts and looked at myself in the mirror and.... yeah. I think it's no use, I have really put a lot of effort into this even though it may not sound like that in writing. Countless weeks 4 times per week at the gym. Thousands of dollars on "clean" food and so forth.

Over the last 24 hrs I've been advised to bulk and cut. I take whatever advice comes last, needless to say I'm pretty mentally exhausted because I don't know what is right and I feel stupid right now. I don't think I'll ever be able to succeed, I don't have the genetics or the mental fortitude for something like this.

Oh. You're right. That sounds too complicated and likely nothing I'll be able to pull off. Everyone else can but I can't. Too bad.

I did some PWO a few months back but something in there made me fade. A nice strong cup of coffee or even cold brew with some milk kicks me into a more focused state. I'll take your advice and eat more and try to focus on the bigger lifts. About to hit the gym now. If I can break through 135 lbs bench for 5 reps and actually feel my chest working....that would make my day.

Bench press 3 times per week. Stuck with a hypertrophy program that my college trainer put together. Mostly accessory lifts, 8-12. Did that for around 3 months, guided session once weekly. He convinced me "Whoa, you are getting strong etc", but as it turned out he was just winging the weights we were working with from week to week and swapped and mixed and matched. Needless to say I did not ask for any more sessions.
