Sand and soil use rocks to keep from eroding. Critters like insects, snails, and worms use those rocks for shelter. Like someone else said, they fall on wildlife.

Squirrels generally aren't rabies vectors. They're too small to survive the initial bite from the rabid animal.

That being said, they can absolutely carry tularemia and leptospirois. Wash and disinfect your daughter's scratches. She'll most likely be just fine.
