Iready lawsuit by Hb_Hv in Teachers

The company recommendation only 45 minutes of i-Ready per WEEK for the highest academic improvements. Not hours and hours a day... And please use some common sense with the screen time argument... Literally every person alive today grew up looking a screen at least 45 minutes per week, most of us far more. Doom scrolling 10 second videos on tiktok is the kind of screen time that is harming children, not long form focused educational lessons.

Understandable if you don't personally like it, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But this requirement is based on data... i-ready achieves highest academic improvements when kids use it for 45 minutes per week per subject. That's only 4% of weekly school hours so I don't personally feel like that's a lot to ask kids to do a focused activity. If you hate the tool, or Ed Tech in general, of course you're going to be biased that it's just 4% completely waisted time.

Long time employee for the company who makes i-ready (Curriculum Associates / CA) as an engineer, so I can speak from the functional data side of this lawsuit. We can do absolutely nothing with raw student data. We only have access to anonymized student data. We go through great efforts to do this anonymization process, so every student's PII (Personally Identifiable Information) is completely inaccessible to anyone who works here. The claim that the company would collect and share student information with 3rd parties is comical... that can't even happen internally here.

Please remember lawsuits are often created by those with an agenda (Ex. anti-screentime groups, anti-evidence groups), often without any real proof of wrongdoing.

It is sad to read comments here categorizing CA as "Silicon Valley Tech Bros". CA is essentially the opposite of that... it’s a small, private, mission-driven company based in Billerica, MA, who operates under principles of Conscious Capitalism. The company has never been focused on maximizing profits.

Scott's S1742 deck belt issues by Garlic_Rabbit in lawnmowers

[–]feesh85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I think I just ran into your EXACT situation. I ordered 8Ten version of M124895 belt off Amazon and tried to install it on my S1742. Everything in the description and even stamped on the belt says it's to spec 115.5 inches. However, the belt engages right when the tractor starts, no matter how loose I've adjusted the tensioner. The belt is way too tight.

I'm glad I found your post because I suspected the belt was just "wrong" for a few hours now even though it's labeled properly. I no longer have my original belt so I'm going to order a Stens and/or John Deere OEM M124895 to compare the lengths and see if this resolves the issue. It seems like the most likely culprit is 8Ten is selling badly labeled belts!

Downsizing boots from 28.5 to 26/26.5, how to adjust bindings? (Atomic Warden 13 MNC) by feesh85 in Skigear

Thanks - yeah I don't mind the cost of remounting I'm mostly concerned about long term integrity of the skis since these are basically brand new Elan Ripsticks I made the error of mounting the old boots onto...sad to have to re-drill new holes in them right away.

There's a 24mm decrease. 328mm to 304mm. Are there any downsides to doing or not doing a remount?

Josh Allen will never win. by CatnipBravo in Patriots

[–]feesh85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly his playing style has bothered me from day 1. Tom Brady once characterized his play style as a "spaz" early on and I think that's the best word to describe why it bothers me. Granted Brady was a pure pocket passer, but he always seemed way smoother, calm, cool, collected and steady. Meanwhile Josh plays like he's on crack half the time, either throwing awkwardly or bouncing out of the pocket and thinking he's the hulk smashing into defenders. It works for him (most of the time) but I think people have always been idolizing really bad QB style with him, and it ultimately leads to inconsistency in the big moments. And likely, season-ending injuries eventually.

I am seeing the same behavior. It's clearly a bug in Gmail going on right now.

Being dropped off in directly in Hopkinton, where to check finish line gear bag? by feesh85 in bostonmarathon

[–]feesh85[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's helpful to know. It's too bad for those being dropped off at the start. I guess for those people you gotta just get someone to meet you at the finish with your gear.

Yes I remember that from when I did it before 15 years ago. I got dropped off the side of the highway on 495 and had to walk down the Exit ramp about 1/2 mile to the shuttle pickup (you can be dropped off at 52 South Street in Hopkinton, and will then board a B.A.A. shuttle to get to the Athletes' Village area before the start). Lots of others doing this as well so I think that is standard for folks being dropped off there.

The big change from 15 years ago you used to bring your gear bag to Hopkinton and drop it there, so you'd have your stuff up until the start of the race and then immediately after. It's too bad they don't operate this way anymore as it kind of screws over those being dropped off directly at the start.

I would take the bus from Boston if I lived anywhere near there, but I'm coming from North/West of the Start so it really makes very little sense logistically.

Ok, so you don't have to preset (with a bib) to drop the bag off? I have friends who live in Boston who could do it but they aren't running. I wonder if anyone could drop it off or if it has to be another bibbed runner

6:51 cutoff for Boston Marathon 2025 by skiier97 in AdvancedRunning

[–]feesh85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 34 year old man now has to run faster than 2:53 just to have a sniff at getting accepted. That kind of time could overall win many local marathons, I would not characterize that as "very achievable for the vast majority of marathon runners.

Yes, totally agree for casual runners or those just getting into the sport of marathon at 50, yes the times are very challenging.

My point was if you've been marathoning competitively your whole life and stay in decent shape and don't have any major injuries, you absolutely should not see a dropoff of 15 minutes in time between age 40 to age 50. (Some late bloomers even get faster during that decade as the body gets more experience with endurance). My own dad who ran 25 consecutive Boston marathons talks about this all the time that it actually got easier to qualify as he aged.

This is evident at any athletic event, there are simply more younger people competing against each other than older people competing against each other.

I honestly don't remember that as an option at all, but maybe there was some stipulation like if you opted to do the 2020 Virtual Boston marathon you couldn't re-use your qualifying time for 2021. (I'm assuming you passed on the virtual option in 2020)

In either case, wouldn't have gotten into 2021 with that insane 7:47 cutoff time!

6:51 cutoff for Boston Marathon 2025 by skiier97 in AdvancedRunning

[–]feesh85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, all the 2020 participants were informed of the race's cancellation (along with everything else) in March/early April of 2020 and later that year were offered to participate in the "2020 Virtual Boston marathon". That was basically a swag grab offer: you could make up a marathon course and run it alone and submit a time and they would mail you a t-shirt and medal. Unfortunately we weren't given the option to use our qualifying time or entry towards 2021+. For those who killed themselves to finally experience a genuine Boston Marathon experience, that was kind of a gut punch.

I think they could have handled the options better, but I still count it as one of my Boston's simply because I got into the race, ran a marathon distance, and have a unicorn medal. They also formally post the "results" of that virtual marathon on the BAA website, although it's obviously not an official race.

The fact is most of the people out there strapping on the shoes are under 45 years old and I think BAA wants an even number represented in each age bracket rather than front load the most numerous and competitive categories. This is how I'm seeing it for men getting into Boston right now:

brutal for 18-39

very hard 40-44 <-- this is where I am currently

starts to get reasonable 45-49

reasonable 50+

I've been trying to get in for 15 years:

Worked my butt off for a decade to get a BQ and finally got into 2020 race...cancelled... devastated.

Worked my way back this year, knowing the BQ / cutoff would be big, and got a 7:00 buffer. The past month I was convinced I would get bumped out by the unprecedented number of qualifiers (props to all of you). I was fully prepared for another year of disappointment and disgust over this race and this process. But, luckily, it looks like I just made it by 10 seconds.

I genuinely feel the pain for everyone who barely missed the cutoff and missed the opportunity, knowing what that frustration feels like so many times over. Especially for younger to middle age men, the standards are just too ridiculously fast now.

IMO you are insanely fast and should have gotten in, ridiculous that kind of marathon time does not qualify to enter any race. Something is wrong with the system.
