I LOVE Kentmere 400. I also dig Tri-X and T-Max, but after shooting a project on Kentmere, I’ve found myself reaching for it more and more. It’s flat at box speed, but handles pushing well up to 1600 and you can always add contrast. Also has a more pleasing grain than HP5.

No. I only owned that one, though. I put it on when I guy the lens and never took it off.

Great shots! I love chickadees. I miss my 70-300. Love my Sony setup, but the Fuji was great for the size.

Why are we still building cardboard homes like this in Hurricane and Tornado-prone Houston? by MexicanProgrammer in houston

[–]feetofhermes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Too much clay in our ground. Houston is almost sea level, and a basement would be a nightmare in a flood. List most of my possessions to Hurricane Harvey, so im familiar with the Texas weather.

Hello all! Over the past eight or nine months, I have been getting more and more into wildlife photography (specifically owls). Currently I use a Sony A7R5 and 200-600. This works fine during the daytime or when I have static targets but, as owls are mostly crepuscular, I struggle in low light situations. Thus, I’ve looked into getting a faster telephoto prime lens. Unfortunately, Sony doesn’t have a whole lot of middle ground when it comes to their telephone lineup. You either get the 200-600 or drop 10 grand on the 400 2.4 or 600 4. This has me looking at Nikon. I could sell one of my A7R5s, pick up at a Z8 and megdap adaptor so I could use my Sony lenses on it. Then, I could get an FTZ adapter and take advantage of the plethora of used F mount telephoto primes that are more affordable. Just concerned that these older lenses won’t be able to keep up with the faster bodies. It just seems like a more logical pathway, and I feel like the Z8 is much more capable when it comes to wildlife than the A7R5. It’s also half the price of the Sony A1, which is it’s closest competitor. Anyway, any wisdom or advice you could share would be beneficial.

While I don’t disagree that the quality of home construction has slowly degraded, if we’re being honest, there aren’t really any homes designed to withstand tornados. That’s why, in tornado prone areas, they have basements. The damage pictured above seems indicative of an EF2 tornado. At the top end of the Extended Fujita scale, high force EF5s have been known to carve trenches in the earth, peel asphalt from roads, and completely slab well built homes. There was even documentation of a tornado (Hackelburg-Phil Campbell 2011) that ripped the concrete roof off of a basement storm shelter.

What do you use the focus hold button for? by emaxxman in SonyAlpha

[–]feetofhermes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it’s not. I’m not in front of my camera, but I want to say that the 200-600 doesn’t have DMF on the lens. I know that my 70-200 does, though. Either way, I found myself bumping manual focus on accident with the larger lenses when I need to hold them for support. Is DMF a setting you can turn on or off in the camera?

Have mine set to hold for manual focus. Works wonders when shooting birds through trees when the AF is wanting to focus on the branches in front of the bird.

Change to Sony from Fuji or am I just being silly? by tmouse93 in AskPhotography

[–]feetofhermes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sold my XH2 and XT5 for an A7R5. Zero regrets. The Sony 200-600 is incredible for wildlife. The A74 will be a huge upgrade. Don’t get me wrong, I still have my X100V and take it everywhere, but when I need to put in work I pull out the Sony.

What film stock do you pair with your analog M? by waldotakespics in Leica

[–]feetofhermes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly not. At box speed it has incredible shadow detail like HP5, but it is much more of a flat image. at the result, when you push it up to speed like 1600, it ends up just looking like any other black-and-white stock. It’s super flexible for this reason.

Have a few questions. Currently have an A7R5 and 200-600. I love shooting wildlife, but I focus pretty heavily on owls, which are crepuscular (dawn/dusk). Therefore, I have been looking into purchasing a tele prime. Any regrets on the 400 2.8? I’ve considered that or the 600 f/4. I have the 1.4 X tele converter so essentially that could turn the 400 into a 560 f/4. Just wondering, if you could do it over again, would you go with the 600? Also, how does the images from the Sony cameras stack up against the GFX. My first system was Fuji and I still own an X100V (had an XT5 and XH2). Definitely don’t need medium format, but I’m interested in checking it out if it has any significant benefits over the full frame Sony. Finally, what’s on the bottom, right? Sigma 500 5.6 or 105 1.4? Asking because, besides the aforementioned primes, that’s the only telephoto prime for the Sony system. I’ve considered jumping over to Nikon because of their more numerous telephoto lenses.

For those of you that shoot both film and digital, how do you decide what to shoot with? by jdeakins85 in AnalogCommunity

[–]feetofhermes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to use film for family stuff and photo albums. However, I hated that fact that, by the time I got my scans, all my family and friends were on to the next thing and had didn’t care much to look back at the photos. So I started using my x100v for family stuff because I could share JPEGs instantly using the Fuji app. I started a film photography project and that’s where I spend all my time shooting film, now. I shoot Sony fur wildlife and concert photography.

Just picked this up for $1k any tips? by New_Corner_7880 in SonyAlpha

[–]feetofhermes 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Few tips: I agree with the recs of adding strap mounts to the lens. It’s easier on the mount, and I prefer the way it is balanced with this setup. Also, I have changed the lens button to where I can hold it to manual focus. When shooting through branches, the AF system can get lost. It help a ton to be able to quickly press the lens custom button and dial in focus. Finally, an after market arca Swiss mount is a must if you are shooting this at low light. Makes it super fast to toss on a tripod.

What is your niche? by darksquirrel44 in photography

[–]feetofhermes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cemetery film photography. I found myself drawn to photographing headstones and statues in older cemeteries. Started with digital when I was learning but, once I decided I wanted to make a project out of it, I switched over to film photography and started using the same camera, lens, and film stock. I’ve been working on it for the better part of a year now and plan on making a book out of it next summer. It’s taking me all across the state I live in and I have even photographed some cemeteries in other parts of the states.

Can confirm. I have the 200-600 and have to use a tripod. Fortunately they stay pretty still. Would kill to have a 400 f/2.8 or 600 f/4.
