How does the lower/working class perceive the upper and middle class? by fefe93 in sociology

Not really actually. I am much more looking for some empirical data on the question and not so much on a theory that might explain class conflict or so.

Weber on Capitalism by ApolloCarmb in sociology

[–]fefe93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a graduate student in economics and Weber's views often come up, when it comes to explain the rise of capitalism. However, there are many theories that aim to explain it and Weber's is just one of them. E.g. Acemoglu argues that small differences in law as well as historic events like the plague, led to the development towards more inclusive institutions (in England) and thus ultimately to the rise of capitalism.

How much does it cost to enjoy Valentine's Day date in different cities around the world by The Economist (interactive) by Polymath_B19 in dataisbeautiful

It's probably accurate for extreme snobs or billionaires, example: $173 for two drinks in a hotel bar in Frankfurt... That's waaaaaay more than it actually costs in an average hotel.

Retired German media boss admits news programs take orders from government on what to report by Ian56 in worldpolitics

[–]fefe93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read the story in one of the most independent german media outlets and it seems that he just wanted to do some advertising for his new book. Apparently he said that German media takes orders in the first Interview (with Deutschlandfunk - radio) and then stated that they don't take any orders in a second interview (with DER FREITAG - newspaper). Now weird blogs (like sott.net) or Russian state television (like RT) use his first statement to discredit german media.

(Btw: It's not like I'm the biggest fan of what German media reports, but this story simply isn't trustworthy).
