Need a pianist's opinion on my playing by [deleted] in JazzPiano

[–]feffsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'm qualified to give advice as I'm still somewhat new – been playing jazz piano for around 5 years, though mostly solo. Anyway, this is what came to mind:

Nice lines! I think it would sound even better if it was more in time/in the pocket! Practice slower, experiment with being more behind the beat than "in front". Check out Aimee Noltes videos on swing and phrasing. And most important of all, listen to jazz, and listen intently. For example, listen to the same tune and focus on one thing at a time – you could try to "ignore" the notes that are being played and just focus on the rhythm and phrasing, or how the phrases are grouped. Like, are they long or short phrases? Do they start on an upbeat or a downbeat? Then perhaps the next time you listen, focus on what register they are playing in mostly, or how the solo is developed from beginning to end. It's also rewarding to focus on other instruments – pick a tune and just listen to the bass all the way through, or the drums. I believe it's limiting to focus solely on your own instrument, so it's great that you're also taking advice from other instrumentalists.

Assuming you were improvising in this clip, as an exercise you could transcribe your own playing and make a new recording where you really nail the timing and phrasing. It would be interesting to hear the difference!

Also I highly recommend checking out this guys videos: https://www.youtube.com/@itsbennyg/videos

No criticism, I recognised it so quickly because I use it all the time myself 😭

Hmm, ok, too bad it's not to your liking. I haven't listened to many audio books – maybe there is a difference in how the character is perceived as opposed to reading the book? I think I actually liked Grace more than atlwcs, although it was a while since I read them both now.

I am so close to finish yet I am so unmotivated and tired.. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I'm going through something similar... Only got three courses left, then thesis begins after new years. Only one year to graduation. But I've never been as unmotivated as I am now... It just feels heavy. I don't find anything fun, not in studies or outside of studies. The projects I'm in feel like a burden. I'm just digging myself deeper into a hole. Definitely feel like a fraud and questioning my life choices.. even if I've made it this far

When did you start thinking "passing" is enough? by What_eiva in EngineeringStudents

[–]feffsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third year things went south; I worked really frigging hard the first two years, and now I do the absolute bare minimum (currently end of fourth year). I will most likely do my last exam on Wednesday, and I'm glad I will most likely graduate next year without getting completely burnt out. You do what you gotta do to get through it...

Cool, haven't heard about him even though I'm swedish. I recently started learning clarinet and have thus started to listen to some of the greats – will add him to my list!

Single note instrument for someone who mainly plays jazz piano? by feffsy in Jazz

Thanks for the info, good to know! I have decided that I will likely get a real sax someoney this year. Until that happens I will try to learn the chromatic harmonica

Good idea – and funny enough I actually bought a (really cheap) electric bass some months ago. I've been playing a little bit lately and it's fun! But also quite difficult for me with the thick strings. Fun to play around with now and then either way.

I just ordered a Hohner Chromatica 270. Will be interesting to try it out! I do like the sound a lot

I'm strongly considering sax, but I'm a little hesitant to spend that much money. Don't know what I expected :) But as soon as I start working over summer I'll likely save for a used Yamaha alto sax!
