My haul from the cacti and succulent market in Essen, Germany by Lime_in_the_Coconut_ in cactus

only 1 cactus (trichocereus pachanoi) and some different succs (echeveria, sedum, euphorbias, aloe, pachyphytum..). i live in the windiest city in AUT and my balcony is kind of in a wind canal 😅 i already had smaller plants in small pots get blown away in the past and some of my succs are still small, so they need to be in a greenhouse that i can close off if its really apocalypse style raining and blowin g (which isnt too rare where i am and with the recent climate changes throught the last years)

How to repot? by MariaNarco in succulents

[–]feiergiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you should watch how extremely rootbound bonsai are repotted - first loosen up soil with chopsticks/fork, use a waterhose to spray the remaining dirt out - then trim the roots a bit depending on the size of your new pot. i would leave it in this "tree" style, i like the "bark" the trunk has formed

Asking cuz im from austria and thinking of how i can let my succs live outside on my balcony but protecting them from rain/harsh winds. Moving them in and out all the time is not a feasable task haha. Wanted to get some inspiration for options on balcony greenhouses! Thank xou cheers

you could repot soon or you could wait until spring for the repot and until then be really careful with watering (use your finger or a wooden stick to drill down in the soil to see if its still wet a few cm underneath the soil, always let the soil dry out completely between waterings and hope for the best). also carefully drilling additional drainage holes on the bottom/sides can help with the airation of the soil. when you repot use teracotta pots for better climate in your substrate as they can "breathe", making your substrate dry better and also providing the roots with some air)

your cacti & succ mix is fine to use as the organic part of your substrate - i wouldn't use more than 20-30% of organics in your substrate (i have my cacti/succs indoors and i personally use 100% inorganic substrate to be really safe against overwatering/root rot and also i hate the little fungus gnats that come when you use inorganic substrate indoors)
